Critics of President Biden’s decision to withdraw from Afghanistan often paint a rosy picture of the country, arguing that with the help of the United States, the Afghan government had reached a stable stalemate with the Taliban and made great advancements for women’s rights. Afghans themselves would probably say otherwise. Afghans remained resistant to the idea of gender equality. A survey asked many questions about women’s rights, and the answers to most, such as access to education were suitably positive from a Western point of view. But one question shows how tenuous, and perhaps artificial, those positive answers were. Respondents were given six options for what a woman should wear in public. The No. 1 answer, chosen by 32 percent of Afghans, was the burqa. Twenty-eight percent chose the only slightly less oppressive (according to westerners) niqab, which differs from the burqa only in allowing a slit for a woman’s eyes to be visible. Fourteen percent chose the chador, the outfit that shocked Western sensibilities this week when CNN reporter Clarissa Ward wore it on camera, as the Taliban requires. Given that nearly three-quarters of interviewed Afghans think women should be allowed to appear in public only if they are dressed head to toe in black a number that excludes Afghans in Taliban-contested villages that presumably hold even more restrictive views, it’s clear the country remains far from conducive to women’s rights. No one should be under the impression that Afghanistan has greatly improved according to western-lifestyle. This survey clearly indicates that the nation was steadily slipping out of control and remained barren ground for the Western-style society that nation builders tried to construct despite nearly 20 years of American-led war and reconstruction. The Afghan people know who they are and more than that, they know who they have always been, and they are just as proud as Americans. We are leaving behind a country comprised largely of people who have never had contact with their government, people who live by religious rules and customs which are foreign to some Americans and with which most Americans don't agree, even rules which some Americans consider to be cruel and backward. But it's their country, and those are their rules and customs, and now they will return to living as they did before US got there and started ordering them around and demanding that they do things US way, or else.

There has never been a graceful exit for the losing side in any war. Truth is, our hasty withdrawal from Vietnam was even worse if you look at the numbers and the whole picture. Only 7,000 were evacuated from Vietnam during the fall of Saigon, with many more left behind, including two dead American soldiers----the last to die in the Vietnam War----left behind in a hospital and not returned until a year later by the Vietnamese. That evacuation occurred under hostile NVA and Vietcong fire. Over 17,000 have already been evacuated from Afghanistan despite the complete capitulation of the Afghan government and Afghan Army in just 11 days, with no hostile fire upon American troops by the Taliban so far. Moreover, the January 27, 1973 peace agreement signed by the Americans with the North Vietnamese ended all direct U.S. military involvement in Vietnam, and provided sixty days for troop removal. Just as with Afghanistan, all troops were removed. However, it was over two years later, on April 30, 1975, when the fall of Saigon occurred. So, the U.S. had nearly two-and-a-half years to evacuate everyone else before the fall of the South Vietnamese government and armed forces, instead of just 11 days like in Afghanistan. The other thing in stark contrast between Vietnam and Afghanistan is that no Democrats----including Carter, who was running against Ford for President----tried to use the situation for political gain like Republicans are so desperately and depravedly doing now. That, despite the fact that it was the previous Trump administration which bears the brunt of the blame for the current situation.
