Bill Maher: I'm tired of the extremes and the extremists that dominate the debate

Being tired of extremes is a key part of the Harris promise. Trump has lowered the bar on discourse, instituted ad hominem attacks in place of policy proposals, lied about anything and everything and promised fascist behavior if elected - and you don't get much more extreme than that. We do indeed need to move on from this dark chapter in the history of our democracy.

I think racism lands differently for me. I hear Maher saying "I didn't do it, but I benefited from it". I grew up in a racist environment and was taught racist and classist things as a child (examples: certain neigborhoods being inherently dangerous, assumptions about people's intelligence and ability, etc). While I didn't say or do overtly racist things, I benefited from racism, and I believed what I was told at the time. As an adult, knowing this about my past, I have a responsibility to unlearn the racist crap as it comes up. I'm in my late 50s, and while I've deprogrammed myself quite a bit, I assume that I will continue to need to unlearn racist assumptions and tropes for the rest of my life. I don't feel bad about myself as a human being because of what I had to unlearn, but I do feel an ongoing responsibility to continue to deprogram myself.

What Bill Maher doesn't seem to understand is that we LOVE being called "liberal" and "woke." These are *GOOD* qualities that every man, woman, and child should aspire to. If Jesus were alive today, he would most certainly be label as both liberal and woke. In other words, a person like him who freely gives to those in need, who is enlightened, spiritual, and awakened. The path forward is to slowly replace these unnecessaries in life. Religion is clearly on the way out. Something like 25% of all Americans identify as either atheist, agnostic, or unaffiliated. Bill talks about the Palestine region like it’s about “which religion was there first”. This either shows a remarkable lack of understanding of the situation, or hints at religious supremacist views.
