What do y'all think about this thesis for a rhetorical analysis essay? Obama begins and ends with encouraging, empathetic statements, uses colloquial and self-deprecating humor, and poses a rhetorical question followed by a metaphorical response to assure the class of 2020 that despite a world pandemic they can break old norms and become tomorrow's leaders today.

Well, to be fair, President Obama is known for his good speeches and the effectiveness of them, so a lot of this speech may really have come from himself.

I would suggest taking this time to practice identifying rhetorical strategies in passages from past exams on the College Board's website rather than trying to study many types of devices. In my opinion, the best way to study is to practice as much as you can!

I agree with you, the ethos element is a little more subtle here. There is one excerpt that I think exemplifies ethos towards the end of the passage: "When you need help, Michelle and I have made it the mission of our Foundation to give young people like you the skills and support to lead in your own communities, and to connect you with other young leaders around the country and around the globe." Here, President Obama proves his authority to speak about this subject by explaining his own efforts to support young leaders through the Obama Foundation.

That phrase actually refers to the Obama Foundation, a nonprofit organization established by President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama!
