When I was 18 (and also a heroin addict) I hit a Mexican on a bike with my car. Me and my using buddy had just picked up so we were both nodding out. I just happened to be driving. We were making a right hand turn at a red light. There was heavy traffic so I couldn’t see the guy on the bike to the left. I rolled past the red light and bam hit the guy. He seemed fine but his bike was all messed up. I immediately got out of the car freaking out and asking if he was alright. His wife was with him and kept yelling, “he’s fine! he’s fine!” in broken English as they both quickly sauntered off. I couldn’t believe they just ran off like that when I was clearly in the wrong. A little later on my friend explained to me it was because we’re both white and they were probably worried about getting deported if they tried to sue white people. It wasn’t funny at the time but all these years later it was kind of hilarious. I’d like to think the guy I hit is telling the story of that day to his friends too.
