I went back and watched the older ones recently and didn't realise until then that Mike played a lot of the incidental characters in the show long before he became the main guy.

I was just glad it wasn't due to the MST3K crew having a falling out and it was all amicable as far as I know. I would hate for Joel to be the Tina Louise of MST3k. I was pretty worried when Mike showed up that there had been some sort of shake-up and the show would get canceled.

It wasn't amicable. Joel and Jim Mallon had strong disagreements about the creative direction of the show, which led to Joel leaving. Trace Beaulieu ended up leaving for the same reason. The reason we're getting all this new MST3K stuff now is because Joel and Shout! Factory bought the rights from Mallon, and Joel has the creative control he wanted back then.

I also read that the 'mst3k movie' was a big point of contention and Joel didn't want to do it. It's sad it wasn't on good terms but then again I liked the direction the segments went with Mike. I really didn't like most of the 'Joel' era segments/skits.

I like Mike as a host, and know that he was a part of the show for years before Joel chose him to be his replacement. But I still wish Joel never left. He is MST3K to me, his era was during my childhood and pre-teen years, and his seasons will always be my favorite.

I remember seeing this when it originally aired. There was some joke when they walk into the mansion of the crime scene, the detective points out the guns and asks if they were loaded. Then Crow or Tom cuts in and says, ya and these ones were loaded at 7 o ´clock and the ones in the living room at 9 o ' clock. It's a little a game we like to play!

I remember seeing the commercial for Joel's last episode where it sounded nearly exactly like the kind that were running for Mst3k, but at the end they casually "And Joel escapes the Satellite of love" and that was it! I giggled not knowing it was real and missed that episode and took years to see it, but watched the episode after it just stunned. Then it took me a while to warm up to Mike, I was like 14 and didn't like change. :P

Joel Hodgson had a creative ingenuity here theatrically what Weird Al does musically, but the Mike Nelson run was the best by far, based on what I have seen.

"Best" is definitely highly subjective. To me (and many other fans) Joel's run was the best, and he was the best host. They were both good, and Mike's comedy was there behind the scenes for years. But MST3K was Joel's baby, and it wouldn't have existed without him. The mere fact that Jim Mallon caused him to leave his own creation, will never stop being bullshit. That guy's own "career" would have been nowhere without Joel.

Except that after the Mitchell episode aired, the film's star Joe Don Baker was angry at MST3K's take on the film. He made death threats to the Mystery Science Theatre cast and crew. In the end, Joe Don didn't have a sense of humour about it

I missed the initial broadcast of this episode then came back later to find some new guy stuck on the SOL, sadness ensued. Turned out the new guy was just as good. I don't have a favorite in that fight. I'm happy they both got to host on this show because they're both funny and talented and the casts have always been great.

My favorite MST3K episode, but it does raise one inconsistency issue. At the end of this episode, instead of trying to get Mike fired, the Mads (well, Dr. Forrester actually - TV’s Frank has some doubt) send him up to the Satellite of Love to replace Joel instead once Mike decides to take responsibility for helping Joel escape and asks the Mads to sign his time card. However, in later seasons, it’s continuously implied that Mike was fired from the temp job (the most famous example being Season 8 Episode 9, where Mike blows up his third planet). Why is that?

I started watching MST3K after Mike was already the main guy and I remember later when I saw a rerun with Joel, I was thinking who the hell is this douche? Wish I'd been there from the beginning, I never really got attached to Joel. He definitely had a different humor and affect. I still enjoyed all the episodes though.
