It's why horror movies before the 70s were so good, because their primary element is suspense and pacing, and that's the bread and butter of good horror story telling. All they needed was the imagery to balance the act, and that's what we have now with all the talent and years of refinement. Get the right director and practical effects studio, and it could be a revised masterpiece.

Yeah, there are the bones of a decent supernatural thriller buried in there. Strong tones of Lovecraft with the psychic interference, probing newspaper man, local villager fodder, and scientific/ government personnel with a vague, ill defined history in the field. Better effects budget and maybe Carpenter or Peele directing...

When this movie finally was shown on TV it was on too late at night for me. I had a bed-time in the fourth grade! This was around 1964-ish-ish. I heard about it at school the next day, from those more fortunate or sneaky than myself. In fact it was THE major TV sensation of the whole semester. Only the advent of TVs 'Batman' could supplant it in our collective affection.

12:12 Is a reference to rear projection, a special effect in which foreground action is combined with filmed action that is then projected onto a screen within the scene. It is commonly used to simulate the movement of a vehicle that is in reality stationary. So the scene outside the rear window is actually another movie. Hence, "They've being followed by a movie."

Old news, I'm sure, but the comment "Hey, don't open that door, McGee" at 48:25 was a reference to an old radio show, "Fibber McGee and Molly," which used a running gag about a hall closet that was crammed full with a lot of stuff that came crashing out, whenever the door was opened. On each show, Molly would warn her husband Fibber, but he always opened it, anyway.

That they dreamed up this whole bad movie shoot a man in space together Idea as a team. They put the idea into action and are good friends. Whereas Frank is just some flunky that he hired after Larry went missing. Not an equal at all and more his employee than his pal like Larry was.

The cool thing about this one is that I watch it for the riffs, but it still ends up drawing me into the story. For different reasons I feel like I could watch this one and War of the Colossal Beast by themselves. This one because I feel like I could watch it and enjoy it by itself, the latter because I remember all the jokes and laugh the whole way through. Rifftrax doing Horror Express made me feel the same way as this though, it's a legitimately interesting movie even without jokes.

good ep, im new to this show, discovered it through netflix, so decided, after watching mac n me on the gauntlet i think its called, to watch from the start, so i just finished series 0 and loved it. its a bit strange seeing cambot using gypsies old body, but i love the change to tom and crow having better arms, and i like the change in the setup about the institute, and how its an experiment.

I don't know how People of the Present bear being confined by head phones. I can't stand anything but a desktop computer, I love 'em so much I have 2, one above the living room TV, the other in my room to sleep by like a little movie theater. Even a laptop is too confining for listening pleasure, my laptop gets too hot if I let it autoplay KZbin, and its sound is inferior because it wants me to succumb to ear phones. I'll die first. Mainly because I'm OLD, so I probably have it beat.

this is my favorite early joel episode as the original movie while bad has some good points (like a decent plot). As a young kid in the 70s I thought the movie was ok back then. This is a great one to rerun when im tired and want to relax. This film inspired many similiar movies and stories later on (The Fog and The Mist come to mind)

The effect when the creature first shows itself after breaking down the door looks really good. It’s when they do the miniature effects at the observatory that are a letdown. It’s a good B movie. There were a few of these British sci-fi films with American actors from that era: The two Quatermass films, Tucker was in another titled The Cosmic Monsters and Dean Jagger in X the Unknown. All of them were good, with the Brian Donlevy Quatermass films being the standouts.

Yeah, especially compared to some of the movies on MST3K it's not really that bad. Mostly it's the effects that make it seem bad but I think for the time it was made, they weren't too bad, not saying they're the best even for the time, it just hasn't aged well which makes it seem really bad.

Here are a few annotations for the first 18 minutes: 7:31: Originally titled "The Trollenberg Terror", a remake of the 1956 British TV serial of the same name. 13:50: Laurence Payne (reporter Philip Truscott) is the only actor to reprise his role from the serial. 15:10 [after "you must have read about it in a book"]: Or maybe she saw the serial, where Ann was played by Rosemary Miller instead of Janet Munro here. 15:37 [after "You've been here before" / "A couple of years ago"]: This might sound like a callback, but there was no Alan Brooks in TV version, and certainly no Forrest Tucker. 17:40: A "col" is a dip or "saddle" between mountain peaks.
