Oh, wow! The captain is played by Joe Shishido, of the chipmunk cheeks! He was a big movie star in the '60s who played in lots of yakuza movies, including Seijun Suzuki's notorious "Branded to Kill." Early in his career, he thought he was being held back by his face not being full enough, so he had a chunk of plastic implanted into each cheek, giving him the signature puffy face look you see here. Joel was never really comfortable being in front of the camera (which should be sort of apparent), but he also started having creative differences with Jim Mallon, the producer of the show. @@yohei72 I'd always heard that it was less "creative differences" and more of a (still continuing) personal issue he had with mallon. for one thing, Joel sort of implies that Jim was the reason that the reboot didn't happen until 2016. I'm astounded they brought up Señor Wences. He lived to be 103 years old!

I get the feeling ken was written with a young teen actor originaly set for the role, gets recruited against their will, has some space magic crap, never listens to orders, starts fights, the usual lead character crap most japanese sci fi shows have(look'n at you, gundam) Now the problem here is(aside from the above) ken is clearly portrayed by an actor in his late 20's early 30's, so how he acts and how others treat him is REALLY distracting given the terrible miscasting here

I believe you are correct. I think I read the book by Cooper in the 70's, I found it in a used book store. Ken was like a renegade, blonde Mormon teen. His parents were missionaries. I tried to find it again but can't.

At least Gundam had badass giant fighting robots. If Megas XLR has helped me to learn anything, it's that, you, I, and chicks all dig giant robots.

***** lol only things i remember about megas xlr is the main guy kinda looked like jon tron and it had half the cast of cowboy bebop voicing it

+ColeVecsion I'm not surprised you don't remember too much of it. It only lasted two seasons. Since then, though, it has amassed a bit of a cult following. I only saw a few episodes as a kid, but I thought it was pretty cool. A giant robot piloted by a fat bastard in a classic muscle car... now that's as American as a giant fighting robot show can get.

What the heck was going on in the last third of this movie? They had a plot, the plot was resolved...and then stuff kept happening

Sandy Frank was notorious for this. He'd buy entire runs of Japanese tv shows and monster movies, put a blindfold on, and keep snipping and stapling until his daily quota of 5,000 ninety-minute American tv-movies was complete. Despite being a rather litigious man, who was once bored enough to file suit against an ex-fiance he broke up with five years earlier, Sandy Frank's reportedly a pretty good sport about having being on MST3K ten times.

Futonrevolution He should be a good sport about it since it's free publicity.

James Schuur There was a long, long time where the Sandy Frank MST3Ks couldn't be shown and there were a few dozen different stories as to why. He doesn't understand this "free" word you speak of. It's short for "freeway billboard" publicity, right?

This "movie" (and the first one) was cobbled together from episodes of the 1979 Japanese TV series "Space Wolves". Time of the Apes was the same (1976 series "Gundan").
