After successfully summiting San Gorgonio last January and San Jacinto last February, we have one more thing left to do.. bagging Mt Baldy this March right before the 2024 Winter ends completing our SoCal Triple Crown challenge. Since we did the first two Saints in overnight camping, we decided to do an overnight also in Mt Baldy which we haven't done before. It was past 1:00 PM when we started hiking towards the Ski Hut and the weather was already bad. Cold and wet. By Ski Hut we can see the white out condition above the Baldy Bowl. We also learned that one fellow fell 600 ft almost from the top of the bowl after losing his ice axe. He miraculously survived. But before we even cross the frozen creek, we chatted with another hiker telling us that he had companion that got separated. We told him that we will keep an eye for him.
We reached the top of the Rock Garden and we found a good spot to camp for the night. As we were setting-up, another hiker showed up and we thought that he was the one missing. Between 9:30 to 11:30 PM helicopter was hovering above our camp. Around 12:30 AM, some search and rescue crew knocked on David's tent door. They were asking if we saw a missing hiker. From there we learned that a third guy was still missing. He was Chinese. The following morning we were able to talk with some of the search and rescue members and we found out that the missing hiker was already spotted and they were conducting rescue already. The missing hiker suffered from ankle injury. He was airlifted as we were coming down from the summit.
This trip was from March 16-17, 2024.

Your videos are always great! What I love about this one in particular is that 1. you're showing everyone that being prepared is key 2. always go with a buddy incase something happens (David, you're a friggn mountain goat 😂) 3. there's nothing like a good pair of sunglasses to make you look like a bada$$ 😁😎

Thanks a lot, Cooter! I really appreciate your comment. Our adventures although not thoroughly planned well enough, we still managed to stay in the ‘safe side’. We can not be complacent when doing these dangerous climbs. David is my best climbing buddy, he always takes the lead.

Amazing!Four dudes went for a hike, two guys slept warm and came back down, no problem. Two other guys endured a nightmare doing the same hike . You guys are the real deal. Great video. Thanks for sharing. Stay safe my friend.

Thanks, Jim! I think preparedness plays very important role when snow traveling. We did our homework before venturing to this kind of weather. We even started late so that we’re not going to stay too long in the cold before going to bed. Although our original plan route was to summit and down to Baldy Village which is longer loop, we opted to play safe when the weather were non-stop changing.

Excellent adventure, great job. Very cold and windy, but you were very fully prepared for it. Seems so many people going up there are not prepared enough.

Thanks, Leon! This mountain alone claims at least 2 lives every year that’s why it’s listed on top 10 deadliest mountains in the US. I’ve hiked this way more in the snow season than summer, spring and fall combined. It’s just that most people who attempt it are not ready or just simply stubborn.

Another great adventure Robert! There was a lot of stuff (someone falling down the bowl and a missing hiker) going on that weekend, but we managed to have a successful trip. Tagay!

As you’ve said many times, ‘never a dull moment in Baldy’. But we were ready with this one after all the ordeals we had from the other two Saints. I hope we can put all these training climbs to a much greater challenge soon.. Tagay!
