Another very interesting and inspirational video, Kerry Ward, featuring marvelous terrain in the 1980 explosion zone, challenging river crossings, and super guest - 2013 Fat Dog 120 ultra champion Nicola Gildersleeve.

Thanks SplicedProductions. One big reason I keep making these videos is feedback like yours. Such a pleasure.

From June Lake, clockwise will get you through the worst of the lava fields when you're feeling most energetic, plus the morning sun behind you seems to help this navigation task.

Very ambitious! Not to nitpick, but the peak your pointed out at 12:45 was actually Mt. Adams!

Looks beautiful. I hope to be able to run it in the next year or two. I just have one very important question. What are dynoritos?

Fulltiltward, Thanks for making and posting your video. Looks like a great day-long adventure, and you guys made it look really easy!?! I have a son and daughter that I hope one day to share similar adventures with. My brother-in-law and I are taking on the loop next Friday (9/5/2014) as a long slow day run as well. Assuming with the ALS challenge mentioned, you must have done this recently, would I be able to twist your arm for some recent beta? What size bladders were your carrying? Where did you find good water? Did you filter or treat? Where did you get the maps you used or did you just print them from images online? I see you have a garmin gps, would you mind sharing the gpx file? I have a gpx I found, but it is quite a bit older, and from what I read the trail in the crossing areas can change from year to year. I typically use nuun, fruit, gu (w/ caf), and maybe a bar with nuts and choc for all day outings, but I am always curious what others use. Do you carry supplements? What food did you take along? What shoes were you wearing as well? I heard la sportivas, but couldn't see yours. Thanks, Tony

Tony, there are a number of running water spots that you could use to refill. I had a 3 liter bladder and never took any additional water on board. I don't have the GPX file handy, but there is one I found online that shows the run from June Lake Trailhead you might use. The trail is pretty well marked. Going counterclockwise, we took lefts all the time - which allowed us to see the waterfall. The only exceptions are marked trails leading up for climbers. Navigation is pretty easy. I was in Hoka Mafates. Food was regular fare for day runs - gels - Dynoritos!, jerky and a ton of trailside berries. Have a great run!
