Prodigal Son
World premiere play written and directed by John Patrick Shanley
with Annika Boras, Timothée Chalamet, Robert Sean Leonard,
Chris McGarry, David Potters
Prodigal Son is a passionate, explosive portrait of a young man on the verge of salvation or destruction, written and directed by John Patrick Shanley (of Tony, Academy Award, and Pulitzer Prize fame). A 17-year-old boy (Timothée Chalamet) from The Bronx finds himself suddenly in a private school in New Hampshire. He’s violent, gifted, alienated, on fire with a ferocious loneliness. Two faculty members (Tony Award winner Robert Sean Leonard and Chris McGarry) wrestle with the dilemma: Is the kid a star or a disaster?
The world premiere of Prodigal Son marks another exciting step forward in the collaboration between Manhattan Theatre Club and this visceral New York playwright (Doubt, Outside Mullingar).

That awkward moment when you put an unknown kid in your play and he makes decades older professionals look like amateurs. Seriously, look at the ease! Not a forced gesture anywhere, not an ounce of self-awareness, not a hint of worry about voice projection and how to produce a dramatic effect. He yells, he wipes his nose, his voice disappears in a mumble, he snaps fingers...Wow! An icon is born.

Pretty strong stuff - after a 90 second performance. And he gets kudos ffor gesticulative overload, and wiping his nose. It's a fine performance, based on a great script and great direction, but let's have a little perspective here ... (also, a shame we don't see any of Robert Sean Leonard's performance.)

“A grown person decided I was good before I was good.” So many children need to hear this in order to have the will and confidence to lead us towards something better in the future. Their goodness is there, sometimes it just takes someone who’s willing to give them a chance to see it. A good teacher can change a life; they’re the foundation of any loving and caring society.
