MTG Deck Tech Sefris of the Hidden Ways! Lets Go Dungeoning!

Hello friends! Today we are doing our next deck tech video! We are going back a couple years to Adventures in the Forgotten Realms to take a look at the upgraded precon deck Sefris of the Hidden Ways! This deck wants to go down into the dungeons of AFR and reanimate some creatures! Sefris is my favorite deck right now. It can get a bit silly with all the venturing if you get the right cards. I have a few recs that help venture on opponent turns for free or for little mana and make for very consistent venturing. Tortured Existence, Doom Whisperer and Teferi Master of Time are good for this. Oriq Loremage let's you tutor cards into your graveyard, you need to tap and it's a little slow but it's repeatable. Master of Death is also repeatable venturing, you can play him on your turn surveil 2 and send a creature to the graveyard, then you can sac him on an opponent turn and bring it back to your hand in your turn and play him again. Clones that can bypass the legend rule like Sakashima the Impostor or Spark Double make it so you can finish a dungeon every two turns and reanimate two creatures when you finish it, so you basically can reanimate 4 creatures each turn cycle. I think Sefris is actually a very strong commander but the deck is too commander centric. In my pod I get targeted whenever I play Sefris which doesn't feel great. All of my friends play one or two infinite combos in their decks and Sefris can be used as a pay off in some combos like Karmic Guide + Reveillark + a sac outlet (Infinite ETBs and LTBs) or Abdel Adrian + Animate Dead (also infinite ETBs and LTBs).

I honestly hadn’t really thought about this deck much beyond the basic precon level but you bring up some excellent points about how to power it up. Do get to play the deck outside of your usual group that knows what you can do and targets you? And if so, is it a fairly consistent deck for you in terms of outcome (top one or two of the pod)?

@@houseofheresy1051 I have a good winrate with the deck, I don't actually keep track of it but by feeling I'd say it's over 60% win rate. Sometimes I play on spelltable and I can do my thing without problem, if you get a Sefris clone online you get so much value and such a tempo advantage looping 4 creatures per rotation, which can be a lot of draw, a lot of damage if there's a Grey Merchant of Asphodel, or a lot of etb removal. The deck is a little slow on turns 1-3 and you need 1 or 2 pieces besides the commander to get going, but you can start popping off turn 4-5 fairly consistently. It's a lot of fun if you like spinning wheels.

I know you’re trying to keep power level down but displacer kitten and teleportation circle could be very good in this

Those are both excellent suggestions! I could probably swap something like cyclonic rift to keep the power level relatively stable but be more on theme. What would you swap out to get those two in? Thanks for watching and the awesome suggestions!

You and me both! It’s easily the hardest part of updating a deck haha. I like your choices! The additions and cuts add some consistency and take out some of the more bloated costed precon cards. Thanks again for watching and sharing your thoughts!

I'm building a Sefris deck currently, but from the ground up rather than from the precon (but on a budget) as my first commander deck. This helped. Slight note: I don't think you have to make so many apologies at the start of the video. You spent a long time saying how you're not an expert and just playing for fun (who isn't?) and that you are missing a lot of card knowledge (who isn't?). I think you can cut all that out, get straight to it and say "I took the precon, tried to take it in X direction, I'll go over the cards I cut and why and the cards I added and why. I think after the changes I've made it is now Y power level and plays in *this* way to try to win.". Less waffle, and you sound more confident, and all we want to see are some card ideas and justifications anyway :)

I do think you left too much of the original precon deck in to be considered a new deck though 😅 I think you made between 2 and 5 changes to the precon deck? And left some pretty atrocious cards in there. I think you should try to add more things that can loot or cycle at instant speed to get triggers on Sefris EVERY turn, not just on your turn.
