Viashivan dragon dates from the period from about Dark to about Visions where WotC designers had decided that cards like White Knight, Serra Angel, and Shivan dragon were under costed. The result was an age of weenie decks that taught a lot of people about mana curves and tempo.
@bluedestiny2710
@bluedestiny2710 2 жыл бұрын
In addition to that, Viashivan Dragon actually has an alternate cost where you can summon it from your hand or library (im not sure the locations of where you can summon it) by sacrificing two very specific and overcosted creatures called Spitting Drake and Kyscu Drake. Both creatures are 4 mana 2/2 flyers, one for red (spitting) and one for green (kyscu), and can pump their power or toughness ONCE per turn, respectively. Wizards probably thought those 2 made it easy to cheat out Viashivan Dragon (i mean, you can get it out at turn 4 - 5 right?) and so they made it overcosted Edit: and the pump effect of Kyscu and Spitting Drake, apparently, STILL needed one mana of their respective colors to activate. I didnt even remember that part O.O Also, their summoning effect only searches from the deck ... so if your Viashivan Dragon is sitting in your hand... it probably isnt coming out O.O this... was a clusterfuck in design

Man, I kind of love the design of elder land wurm, how it's just happy resting and then if you disturb it by trying to attack, it gets really mad and comes and kills you. Maybe if it were, like... a 5 mana 10/10 with the same abilities, I would try and run it.

The creature had two issues. It came out in Legends, a set notorious for having no idea of balance, as it features some of the strongest and worst cards in Magic history at the same time. But worse, it was white, and finding a card that isn't Serra Angel that's good in white usually meant 1 or 2 mana cards. A lot of the cards on this list suffer from that problem; that blue dragon, for example- perfectly fine because strong blue creatures almost always had dumb downsides (other than the original Djinn). Or those artifact dragons; they hail from a time when Wizards was worried about the power level of artifact creatures that could be slotted in any deck. Boy how times have changed there, now the Eldrazi are probably the strongest creatures ever made and any deck can play them.

@@celebrim1 It would be nice if we could go back to an era where balance was an important concern, but that Juzam Djinn was let out of the bottle years ago, and he's not going back. If they created a lower power, well-balanced set, sales would probably drop. Let alone following up that set with several more that have the same design philosophy. As much as everyone gripes about overpowered cards, most people want to PLAY with overpowered cards too much to ever embrace a rebalanced game. Sure, maybe we're not quite at Urza's block levels of insanity now, but I'm sure you could easily think of 20 cards created in the last year that have no business being in the game (outside of gonzo formats like Vintage). And the odds are very good those cards aren't going anywhere.

Aww, my 12 year old self weeps for Elder Land Wurm taking the top spot. I loved that card. To be fair, when stacked against Force of Nature, it's not a terrible deal. 7 mana for a 5/5 Trmple isn't terrible by any means in the grand scheme of what MtG looked like in the early days. Not great, and I'd argue even with it's downside, Force of Nature is a significantly better card, because 8 Power on a trampler puts a lot more pressure on a strong block, and is more likely to get a 2 for 1 or 3 for 1 kill out of a combat. And in the early days, creature damage was the main win condition, so the threat of letting ELW block and unlock could stop a lot of creatures from attacking and slow the game down. However, most of the major threats had some sort of evasion. Shivan Dragon, Serra Angel, and Hypnotic Spectre all have flying and were frequently win condition cards. Protection from a color and landwalks were far more common. So ELW is this big creature that doesn't stop the big threats of it's time, and has only become worse with age, as deck archetypes that don't depend heavily on creature damage have flourished. I was recently playing the old Microprose MtG PC game recently, and marvelled at how niche the usefulness of this card is for how much mana it cost. I had opponents play it against me several times, and I simply didn't care, because I was running a Black deck focused on small fliers like Hypnotic Spectre and Vampire Bats.

Viashivan Dragon was probably costed that way bec Wizards thought you could use the combo of Spitting Drake and Kyscu Drake. Both are 4 mana 2/2 creatures with flying with the ability to pump their power (Spitting) and toughness (Kyscu) ONCE per turn... but you can sacrifice both to cheat Viashivan Dragon out of your hand or library if im not mistaken, similar to Spirit of the Night's alternate cost (yes, SotN has an alternate cost... and if you dont know... yea probably 95% of the playerbase doesnt even know about it so no worries XD ) Funny, many of the dragons who made this list I actually tried to use when I was a kid... like: ooh flying big numbers!!! If... any of you have been following my posts in these Bottom 10s list, you can all deduce I was as sharp as a marble back then -_- Except Elder Land Wurm... nobody likes Elder Land Wurm... (no flying >:( ) I was saved from using this monstrosity of a wur--- uh, dragon bec my then kid brain thought it loses defender until end of turn only and grandpa had to go back to bed after that fight or something! To give Firestorm Hellkite a TINY bit of slack, it CAN be used as a finisher, since it's STILL a 6/6 trampler with flying, making the damage difficult to stop. Back then, I usually just kept it for 3 turns at most ... and it usually be enough since it put my enemy in my burn range, or just kill him right out. However, even back then, there were a boatload of removal that could get rid of it, so it STILL wasn't the best creature out there. This same consideration can be given to Palladia Mors. I just didnt have experiencing using him

Firestorm Hellkite would've been somewhat reasonable if it just had Haste in addition to, or even instead of Trample. Teeka's Dragon would've ironically been better *without* flying. It's at the very least an artifact, which means there are and have always been a ton of effects to cheat it into play. The idea of slapping a Lure onto it and absolutely ripping an opponent's board to shreds and the opponent along with it sounds so cool, but the damn thing has flying which means that only like 10% of creatures can block it at all. What a tremendous letdown. The one strategy that would work great with it is made irrelevant by its own ability.

Lightning Shrieker is just Lava Axe with some potential upside, if you have a sacrifice outlet or your deck has any dragon synergies. It's nothing to write home about, but it's not horrible.

I have a soft spot for the Elder Land Wurm from way back in the 90s. It wasn't particularly good even when it came out, but the game was slower and combat was the primary way to win, so having a 5/5 blocker worked as a deterrent if your opponent didn't want to wake the dragon and start getting hit with it. I think if the land wurm had only cost 2WW it might have been good enough to see decent play back in the day (compare it to the modern Stoic Ephemera, a 5/5 flying defender for only 2W that has to be sacrificed after it blocks).

I'm glad I found these series! Very well-made videos and I like your analysis of the cards throughout. I do feel Teeka's Dragon deserves a bit of break here. While never competitive and awful by today's standards, it and Spirit of the Night (from the same set) represented a key step forward in Magic design with WotC realizing that big creatures with high casting costs should not have crippling drawbacks. The relative success of those cards - I'm sure people liked playing them, despite them being non-competitive - eventually lead to Akroma, Inkwell Leviathan, Triplicate Titan, and other such properly balanced big finishers with size and keywords. Instead of Teeka's Dragon, I'd probably nominate Nalathi Dragon. Horrible stats - a 1/1 flier with limited firebreathing for 2RR - and banding works poorly with evasion abilities, like flying. Another clunker is Tek. Dopey name - it's "tech," get it? - and it takes 1 of each basic land type to make it worth the cost of 5 mana.

Yes, it's expensive and doesn't do much, but I play a mono-red deck that reduces the costs of all my dragons on MTGA, so I can reduce the cost of brimstone dragon easily. This card is basically a slightly stronger more expensive Volcanic Dragon, a card that has saved my bacon more than a few times. But like I said, I'm only iffy about it and I agree with everything you said about it. And a note on the elder shard dragons. All of them were reprinted in a Dominaria set that eliminated their mana upkeep costs and gave them all amazing abilities, but naturally, they're not mentioned here because they're good cards. I've done the worst! I haven't done the best, mostly because I think I would need to find a way to combine non-EDH formats and EDH to come up with a good list. I'll figure out a good way to do it at some point.

Oh, im surprised the Elder Dragon Arcades Sabboth and Mirage's Canopy Dragon didnt make this list Arcades Sabboth, for me, is the 2nd worse among the 5 dragons bec its WAY too defensive. It has an ability that gives your board +0/+2 as long as the creature is untapped and NOT attacking. Then, it has the ability to pump its toughness by 1 for W. At 7 toughness, how... Much more do you need unless youre using Fling or something? Then Canopy Dragon has Trample, G1: this creature gains flying and loses trample until end of turn... Making him the only Mirage Dragon with a drawback instead of a 2nd ability... and at 6 mana, GG4, and only a 4/4 body... Its not threatening anybody O.O
@NizzahonMagic
@NizzahonMagic 2 жыл бұрын
Arcades manages to avoid the list for me because it actually has a very real impact on the board right away, as buffing all your creature's toughness really matters on many board states. It is definitely bad, just not "worst dragons ever" bad. Canopy Dragon is also bad, but I think that having a somewhat passable body and the ability to have one or two evasive keywords makes it passable.

Where's Nalathni Dragon? 2RR 1/1 flying and banding with Dragon Whelp's firebreathing ability. Only available at DragonCon 94 and in Duelist #3. I had one from the Duelist and never played it. I assume I got a few bucks for it when I sold everything a few years ago, seeing as it's selling for $20 now.

Is a top ten with Rampage possible?
@bluedestiny2710
@bluedestiny2710 2 жыл бұрын
The list would probably be full of cards that DIDN'T score any points based on Nizzahon's scoring system and would probably require EDH / pauper or, like in his Minotaur list, some (or most) of the cards would be ranked based on his own experience as a player Most creatures with Rampage are overcosted for their statline. Teeka's Dragon, IMO, is one of the better ones already based on the cards I remembered with that ability O.O Edit: I checked Gatherer, and there are about 14 creatures with the Rampage ability: and there are TWO that MAY have seen play back during their time: specifically Gorilla Berserkers and Varchild's War-Riders. The berserker might be usable due to it's ability to force a minimum of 3 creatures to block it: giving it a +4/+4 buff if it's blocked... but a 2/3 with that ability, rampage 2 and trample for GG3 really isnt threatening enough to force a block ... and Lightning Bolt and Incinerate were a thing then The other is a 3/4 creature with trample and rampage 1 for R1. It comes with a cumulative upkeep of an opponent putting a 1/1 red "Survivor" creature token in to the field under their control. These 1/1s CAN get out of hand, but if you have a constant board sweeper or some way to use those creatures, this 3/4 is actually a VERY efficient creature even for today's standards
@tomscud
@tomscud 2 жыл бұрын
@@bluedestiny2710 pretty sure no cards with rampage have ever been good in pauper, which actually has a fairly high floor for card quality, comparable to block/standard.

I think Viashivan Dragon is better than Canopy Dragon. At least Viashivan flies on it's own power and might actually firebreathe someone to death someday. Canopy Dragon is just a 4GG 4/4 that you have to pay 2 to make it fly.

During their time, they were still legitimate threats. Its VERY hard tp stop 7/7 flyers, esp ones with upsides. I do disagree that Palladia Mors was in the bottom 2. For me, its both Chromium amd Arcades Sabboth thats the worse. A Castle effect (+0/+2 on all your untapped, non attacking creatures) and pumpable toughness for W is very meh
