I'm kind of surprised that Acceptable Losses didn't make it. Same with Kamahl's Sledge. Fun fact: Premature Burial is part of a cycle: Premature Burial - 1B - Time Spiral: Kills a creature that came into play since last turn. (The Past) Cradlle to Grave - 1B - Planar Chaos: Kills a creature that came into play this turn. (The Present) Grave Peril - 1B - Future Sight: Enchantment that kills the next creature that comes into play. (The Future)

Unfortunately, it seems to happen a lot with Seb's art. My favorite piece by him is the one he did for Vengeful Rebirth, which is...an okay card for Commander is some contexts, but is a fairly underwhelming card for the art. But for recent bad cards, there's Allure of the Unknown, which has *really awesome* art, but the card itself is *terrible*. It just seems to happen to him a lot, and it's really a shame, because he's easily one of the most unique artists they have. If they ever go back to Lorwyn, he should lead the art direction.

I drafted a ton of Khans; and I've lost in finals to decks playing it, and had positive records with decks where I reluctantly ran it. Not a good card, but unconditional removal in limited is still unconditional removal.

The spell still seems servicible under extremely narrow situations (i.e draft where resources are limited games tend to take longer to finish), but had it cost 4 mana, i think it will get some people's attention for tge right reasons

You should do worst draw spells. I remember one from kamigawa that you had to mill your top card then draw cards equal to that card CMC and it costs something like 6 Mana and if you had a land on top you wouldn't anything.

That card can be really good in EDH. Combined with anything that let's you look at or manipulate your top card and you could be drawing a lot of cards for 5mana. Or just cast it can hope to get lucky. And it sets up reanimation.

back when i thought that a 50c uncommon was a hard price to pay, i played call for blood in my arcane deck built from 10c bulk commons. it wasnt really an arcane deck, it was just a deck of bulk commons that i put all of my arcane card in because i thought they were cool. call for blood ended up getting cut from that deck when i found mirridon edition terrors. that 50c uncommon was a sengir vampire. that's my call for blood story

Yeah, Sizzling Barrage is not terrible in draft. It's not the removal you want, but it breaks through board stalls a decent amount of the time.

Flavor fail too for Rite of the Serpent is that the art shows two snakes coming out but you only get one. It would still be terrible but that extra 1/1 would make it better and be worth more for the 6 Mana cost.

There are some strictly useless cards here and there, but if every card is as bad as Wood Elemental or Sorrow's Path, no one will want to play the cube. It's novel to laugh at a bad card, but my goal is to force players into getting creative with severely limited resources as well as marveling at the flavor and art of every card they see.

I watch these because I haven't played MtG since... well since before Planeswalkers. Ravnica was my last prerelease. Played competitive till then, in Washington State, frequently at the WotC HQ at Renton. God, The Visions prerelease was an experience... Anyway, these 'worst ofs' let me see those old cards, as power creep has moved creatures into the stratosphere from my day. But these vids are great, I see the nostalgia, and then see a new card or 2 as well. Thanks.

I don't think I would classify Acidic Dagger as a removal spell, even though it has 'destroy' and 'creature' in the text. The way its oracle text reads and the way it's meant to be played makes it more of an almost-sorcery-speed deathtouch effect than a removal spell

The flavor text on Fatal Mutation is metal as heck, though xD Also, as someone who's into quite a few TCGs, Premature Burial being one of the best cards in Yu-Gi-Oh and one of the worst in MTG is kind of funny. They also have completely opposite effects, the Yu-Gi-Oh version being a reanimator

Sizzling barrage is fine compared to the rest tho. Its basically a colour shifted gideons rebuke. You can use it before damage. The gap between it and call for blood for example is massive for example.

I don't know which list it belongs to-- it's sort of burn, sort of mass removal, and sort of nothing at all, but Winter Sky ("Flip a coin. If you win the flip, Winter Sky deals 1 damage to each creature and each player. If you lose the flip, each player draws a card.") surely has to make one or the other of these lists. Even for Homelands, which I realize that we have all tried to memory-hole as aggressively as possible, it's a caution. 50 percent of the time at random, it just gives your opponent card advantage; the rest of the time it still does very little and does it symmetrically. Just mind-numbingly wretched stuff. You know a coin-flip card is bad when even stipulating that you have a Krark's Thumb in play still can't make it decent.

Acidic dagger is clearly an early attempt at equipment, so when you look at it that way... It's still incredibly bad. 4 Mana for "equipped creature has deathtouch" and "when equipped creature dies, sacrifice this artifact", equip 4?

There's also Death Mutation: It destroys a nonblack creature and gives you a 1/1 Saproling for each point of toughness it had. It also costs {6}{B}{G}. It's probably a little better in limited than Rite of the Serpent, but still, yikes.

I would run it on slimefoot. People ij my group play big dorks so like 8 mana for destroy a creature put like 7 saprolings is great. Or in the best occasion, i could have killed a 70/70 abomination (the one that mills opponents when you cast a spell) and gotten 70 saprolings

Sizzling Barrage was ABSOLUTELY a trap card. I drafted it in my first draft in a UR Aggro deck, and it was dead in almost EVERY situation I could use it in. Terrible card in draft, taking the term "draft chaft" way too far. I pass it every time I see it now: I'd rather play a "4 mana for 4 damage to any creature at sorcery speed" over this card. Please, WotC, I'm tired of you making cards THIS bad, even if they are designed for drafting. It's not fun to "discover" a card is this bad when learning the game. There's plenty of spells that are playable in draft that are garbage in constructed. Players can learn about card power that way instead.

That would be a really really good card in Limited, assuming you mean it gives you a 1/1 with deathtouch every time. That turns it into a 5-mana two-for-one, which is usually a good deal.

The number eight I was thinking it would be useful in a deck with trample. But then you said it. This is especially bad though because I have won games recently where I've copied Scute swarm so much that I've been able to block trample creatures with a bunch of scutes and sizzling barrage would only kill one of them. Then again with the right spell doubler you could take out an entire field of blockers. I don't know.

In ye olden days, Sizzling Barrage wouldn't have been terrible, because high Toughness creatures were very expensive. But in a new set like this? Compared to something like Lava Coil, with the same damage and CMC, but instead of downside it exiles anything it kills?

I often play 1-2 sizzling barrage in my gruul landfall decks in ZNR drafts. There are a lot more worse red cards than that... And 6 mana for a sorcery speed removal that removes anything is 100% limited playable in every black deck..

I'm not sure premature burial is as bad as you make it out to be. Compare it with Essence Scatter. It's marginally worse because your opponent gets any ETB or death triggers, but Essence Scatter has always been playable in limited. Premature burial feels OK for limited, which the other cards on this list do not.

Also worth noting, you have to keep mana open for Essence Scatter but not Premature Burial. Obviously yeah Essence Scatter is better, but I agree, Premature Burial feels more playable than a lot of the rest of the list. Not sure about that rarity though...

@@streetpeter3210 yeah like morbid, flashback, unearth, delve, all of them haha! I love this mix. I'm a blue,black player by heart. Grixis Delver Modern (love it), Esper my favourite 3 colour comb. Goes really well with those mechanics

Lol essence vortex. I consider that spell a newbie trap. Back in the middle ages, this was my experience with it Dark Banishing? It takes down any creature but black... Then ill use Vortex, since it can take down ANY creature OR help mr kill my opponent! Its great!! Later Opponent summons Force of Nature Me: i use Essence Vortex... Opponent: .... Ok, i pay 6 life, and swing for game Me: ... Shit... Edit: also, dont forget Intrepid Hero exists. Yes, its fragile as fuck, but it IS a continuous source of 4 power and up removal and STILL costs half mana XD

It's -1 card advantage. It's a 1 for 0, not a 2 for 1. But people call a +1 card advantage a "2 for 1" colloquially. Yes it did something, but nothing that's worth one card because in the end you're one card down and your opponent stays the same.

I wish these had more historical context, even if you wouldn't take it into account for actual ranking. Vengeance dates back to at least 1997, white removal wasn't as much of a thing. It makes no sense to compare it to current white removal of tapped permanents. Might as well bitch about Vizzerdrix and compare it to Hullbreaker Horror.

I always think of the Yugioh Card, Premature Burial... which was basically the Yugioh Equivalent of Animate Dead where it was pretty much Reanimation on an aura.

Premature Burial (Cost 1 Black Phyrexian Mana) Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature card in your graveyard. When Premature Burial enters the battlefield, if it's on the battlefield, it loses "enchant creature card in a graveyard" and gains "enchant creature put onto the battlefield with Premature Burial." Return enchanted creature card to the battlefield under your control and attach Premature Burial to it. When Premature Burial leaves the battlefield, that creature's controller destroy it.

Worst removal spell, and it's from my favorite MTG set. Yeah Scourge had some good cards, but also some pretty bad ones I'll admit. Another pretty bad removal spell from the set was Lingering Death, a 2 mana aura that made the opponent sacrifice the enchanted creature at the end of their turn. Maybe it's ok in limited, but it's pretty terrible otherwise, having to wait a turn before you actually get the creature off the board. Better than Fatal Mutation, but not by a whole lot. Edit: after doing a little more research on the card, I've come to the conclusion that Lingering Death is merely just kind of an average card at best. It has pros (cheap, select removal, sacrificing to get by indestructible and really big creatures) and cons (slow effect and sorcery speed, other better cards), but I would just rather play other similar cards with similar effects. Whether it's good to one player or another really depends on the playgroup. It might be killer in some groups and useless in others. In my usual groups, it's just outclassed by other cards.

You're absolutely crazy. It still removes the creature for two mana. It's not bad at all. Everything in this list is super restrictive, costs way too much, or doesn't work. Lingering Death is much much better than all these.

@@fernandobanda5734minus calling me crazy, I'll agree that it's not as bad as the cards on this list, but it's still not very good. My gripe is that it's slow both because it's an aura and you have to wait until the end of the enchanted creature's controller's turn for the effect, even if you'reonly putting 2 mana into it. I might play it in casual games for the nostalgia, but not competitively. I would definitely play it over any of the cards on this list if I'm forced into that option, but I wouldn't normally play it otherwise. It may not crack any top worst lists, but i doubt it's going into top best lists either.

Funny we’re talking about “bad” removal spells when the last few years, maybe even a decade now, wotc has been furiously at work to make even the premier of Removal ineffective. Cards like Uro do not really give a shit about Swords to Plowshares for example. I suppose it doesn’t matter if limited is able to still use removal effectively since that’s the only format wotc balances for anymore

aladdin's ring 8 mana 4 damage any target

Though terrible in today's standard, Alladin's Ring had SOME use back in the middle ages. I saw some blue white control back then that ran it as their win con. Once you reach a board state where your opponent cant do anything, suddenly a colorless source of 4 damage per turn is, however inefficient it is, becomes a real threat

Sizzling Barrage isn't that bad if you just think of it as a combat trick akin to a pump spell.

It is far worse than a combat trick - combat tricks are more flexible.

@@NizzahonMagic Tricks are more flexible in that they can push face damage or be played on blockers, but tricks are risky to play on defense and only something you ever do out of desperation. Sizzling Barrage is generally a better card on offense and that's how you want to be playing combat tricks anyway.
