@@Devn8tr each hogaak is worth 8 mill and the zombies it brings give 8 mill more. So he just needed 11 more hogaaks. He had 28 untapped zombies in the end, so after first hogaak thats 20 left, play new hogaak by convoking the old one and 7 zombies, sac the old one and get 4 new zombies ->leads up to 17 untapped zombies and a hogaak. There on it costs 3 zombies to make one cycle, so he had enough for 5 more. Thats 7 of the 11 needed. The last 4 can be played by delving 3 cards each time, and he definitely had 12 cards to delve. So there you have it, easy win for the opponent if he had the determination to do it.

48:30 "103 lands and mana-screwed. How is that possible?" I was curious what the odds are with such a big deck so I checked with the hypergeometric calculator: Drawing 10 cards out of 269, you have a 19% chance that 2 or fewer will be lands. Given that the opening hand had 2 lands and you fetched a third out of the deck, the chance of drawing no lands in the first 3 draws was 23%. Seems pretty possible to me.
@rlidwka5 жыл бұрын
About hogaak mill in game 1, after 17:00 board state: In total your opponent could've cast 23 more hogaaks with total mill of 423 cards. Rough approximation: 28 cards in GY + 22 untapped zombies give you up to 25 hogaaks (each costs 2, the rest are paid with previous hogaak+4 zombies) with 16 cards milled each, so 400 in total + 60 on board = 460. But I've carefully checked what happens, so last two are impossible (out of fuel) and 23th hogaak will exile 3 bridges and only mill for 10. Math is probably too long to post here.
@Volvary5 жыл бұрын
I believe you may have forgotten that the Vengevine & Feeder will give off 8 zombies in total, bringing the total up to around 27 or 28 if you do the exiling of Bridge. My count was 497 cards milled.

I played BoW in paper for at least a month when they first reprinted it in a core set. I really like the tension in paper with the deck because the most consistent way to find BoW is to chain together search effects. The tension comes from the fact you have to shuffle every time you search to sufficiently randomize the deck. That takes alot of time. So every search effect makes it easier to find but harder to finish the game on time. I always felt like the opponent was the time clock behind me and not the person in front of me. Very enjoyable to view the game on a different axis.

I have built BOW competitively in the past. The way i approached it was to put categories of cards in the deck and to think of cards as % (or equivalents of) instead of number. So for example if you wanted 4 of BOW (for a 60 card deck) you need 4*4 BOW or searchers- I went with transmute cards, gifts, and the epic enchantment searcher meaning i was running more than a 4 of equivalent. I played a BUW control variant that had a light enchantment combo theme with equivalent of 4-6 of BOW/searchers, 4 of Wrath effect, 6-8 of counter spells, 6-8 of discard, 4-6 removal, 4-6 of draw/land get effects, a variety of meta target that were searchable and/or enchantments, and a zur the enchanter package. You can build it anyway you like but by building towards a deck type and putting in equivalents of its pretty easy to build a competitive shell while also not thinking too much. Also to note gifts is great when you can grab 4 different kinds of the same card- like 4 life gain, 4 wrath or 2-3 of with snapcaster and such. My version was in paper but i don't recommend that. Based on my build above a rough shell is: BOW cards 4 BOW 4 Idyllic Tutor 4 Gifts 4 Mystic Teaching 4 Enduring Ideal Wrath effects 4 settle the wrekage 4 Bontu's last reckoning 4 damnation 4 supreme verdict Counter stuff 4 condescend 4 mana leak 4 remand 4 Absorb 4 supreme will 4 Cryptic Command Discard stuff 4 funeral charm 4 inquisition of kozilek 4 thoughtseize 4 collective brutality 4 mind shatter 4 esper charm destroy that 4 Fatal Push 4 Path to Exile 4 Dimir Charm 4 victim of night 4 utter end 4 kaya's guile Draw lots 4 Opt 4 azorius charm 4 Pull from Tommorow 4 Sphinx's Revelation Meta/Alternate win 4 lilliana of the veil 4 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy 4 Jace, theMind Sculptor 1 form of dragon (For epic spell lock out win) 1 Night of Souls' Betrayal 1 mirari conjecture XX meta cards XX Zur package ~100 land

If you're playing fetches to fix your mana you might as well use them to thin your deck, even if it only helps a tiny bit according to the math.

In that M1 G2, the Hogaak player could have milled you for around 197(E: 497) cards if I counted right, accounting for all the additional Hogaaks that could have been casted from the zombies on the board (8 per hogaak) as well as any follow up hogaak casted from the newly created zombies of those Hogaaks. This ends up to a total of 11(E: 27) Hogaak, between all the Hogaaks with Delve/Convoke and all the Hogaak from Convoke only, 52 zombies, the Vengevine and the Feeder. EDIT: New count, using the real CMC of Hogaak (7, not 8) ends to 497 cards milled, with 27 Hogaaks coming into play. Seth was dead if opponent took the time to process the combo fully. (This is counting the fact that if you have 2 Hogaaks, you can cast Hogaak from graveyard by tapping a on the battlefield hogaak and 6 other "mana", then sac Hogaak in response to mill.)

@@MTGGoldfish well you always try your best and never stop being awesome :D As a viewer it's just much easier to assess the situation, so I tend to be more nitpicky. As a player I make way more mistakes than you. I can't even count how many times I skipped through combat, when I meant to attack, and then blame modo hahaha

What’s the sylvan scrying for? Why not have a ramp spell or something else?

A lot of people misunderstand Battle of Wits decks. It’s not a combo deck - it’s a toolbox deck. In fact, you usually don’t win with Battle of Wits. You get every card you could possibly need, dozens of ways to tutor them, and countless ways to beat whatever your opponent throws at you. Sometimes it’s having Battle of Wits. Sometimes it’s pulling off an infinite combo. Sometimes you mow them over with big creatures. Battle of Wits is just the namesake.

Omg this deck is beautiful

What about shadowborn apostle + rune scarred demon to make battle of wits work?

this deck just got better with the new UW companion

you'd almost need a 3rd-party shuffler for paper battle of wits decks. i'd volunteer
@kiria19755 жыл бұрын
Battle of wits is unplayable in paper because of insufficient randomization and slow play when shuffling

Maybe you have to fetch more aggressively for shock lands and accept that as part of the deck's strength and weaknesses.

The variance in this deck. You could play the same match 200 times and get different results each time.

Hi Seth! Against Tron you cast Bring to Light a couple times. You could have gone for Knight of Autumn and destroy the Oblivion Stone!

I'm surprised he didn't get gifts ungiven, for battle of wits, eternal witness, knight of autumn, unburial rites

@24:47 why couldn't he scapeshift a volcano and a mountain to win? Or do you just want flavor wins, Seth?
@MTGGoldfish5 жыл бұрын
We needed another land. With just five lands we would have triggered Valakut.

I really did enjoy the video, Seth. BUT this is the definition of an against the odds deck. I know it went 6-2, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

I'm not sure it's actually possible to shuffle it in paper.
