Seth says around 30 min mark in match two that all 4 copies of assault are still in and wants to hit one off a cascade- There's only 3 in the list, and with it being so crucial to winning there should probably be 4
@sheepy4035 жыл бұрын
James Martin the problem with playing the full 4-of is that once you've resolved one copy, the others become the worst draws in your deck. Given that, how slow and grindy the deck is, and how relatively resilient enchantments are in Modern, I think 3 in the maindeck is probably correct.

I've been playing around with Loam in Modern for well over a year now and my deck is currently Jund colors, but it looks completely different from this one. I think the problem with this deck was that we didn't have any real cards to set up our combo of Loam and Assault and without the combo it really is just bad Jund. In my list I play 4offs of both Faithless Looting and Stitcher's Supplier to help with setting up the combo; Looting helps find our pieces and works well in conjunction with Loam, Supplier helps us find both Loam and lands (let's not forget that we need a surplus of lands to really get crazy) and can chump to keep us alive until the combo is set up. The 4th Assault is also non-negotiable; games with one redundant card in hand are better than games where our deck doesn't work. I also have playsets of Raging Ravine for more reach and Tireless Tracker to have more payoffs for Loam (in that regard they are basically Assault 5-8 despite the fact that they do two completely different things).

Hey Seth, here's a couple of thoughts on the mana base and a direction that could be fun to introduce into the deck. I think you're right that the deck isn't running enough cycle lands, but in specific I feel you're missing a huge opportunity in not running Canyon Slough and Sheltered Thicket (it's a shame that there isn't a Golgari double colored cycle land as well). Both lands are fetchable, they are good for fixing and have cycle. Sure, they come in tapped, but a lot of the time, I think their upsides might balance that out. Nuturing Peatland should probably also be included, just so you can sac it for card draw, if you desperately need to dig for stuff. Also, if you're going to run Tireless Tracker main deck and focus more on a Golgari build, how about perhaps adding more af few more landfall abilities, and even Scapeshift to get your lands in the graveyard and find the utility lands you need, and so you go can all in on land synergies. Valakut is of course a tried and tested option for red, but also Field of the Dead, Ob Nixilis, and maybe even the green and black Retreats as sideboard options to either drain, pump your creatures, or even gain life against more aggro'ish strategies. I know you want to throw your lands away, but this could give you a second axis to work on. I also think Elvish Reclaimer could be an interesting way to circulate your lands from your hand to play, to your graveyard, and back to your hand again with Loam. It's also a pretty solid mini-Goyf that comes down on turn one, and is a decent blocker and attacker. I don't know, just a thought.

47:25 That Raven's Crime cast was almost certainly a misplay -- if the opponent's card was Lava Dart, then you just enabled an out for them and can no longer guaranteed-kill them unless they mess up.
@anaphysik5 жыл бұрын
Actually, in that case they would definitely kill you if they don't misplay themselves -- Flashback Faithless Looting, then after Aria's effect resolves, flashback Lava Dart (if you try to Bolt them now or in response to Looting, they just double Dart you; if you try to to respond to the first Dart, then the second finishes you off.) FWIW, had they indeed discarded a third Lava Dart, I think the correct play would've been to mainphase Ghost Quarter one of their Steam Vents in the vain hope of tricking them into saccing it to flashback one of the Darts, which would give you a window to Bolt them in response to Aria's effect -- if they flashback the other Dart, then that plus Aria would only deal 6 and your Bolt would kill them (the first Aria trigger wouldn't have resolved and so wouldn't have added another counter). It's an unlikely-to-work plan, but it's also the only out I see at that point.

End of M1G1 where you were concerned about being too greedy, it was actually right to go for it there. You just start by cycling the Moor, make them have the Surgical then instead of giving the chance to have it next turn too. If they Surgical, you weren't going to be getting it next turn anyways.
@wafflesporq5 жыл бұрын
Andrew Klein actually though he is protecting himself. If they have the surgical, they need to use it before he goes to his next turn, so most likely they do it in upkeep before draw. He can respond to Surgical then by cycling the Moor and dredging the targeted loam which fizzles the surgical. If he goes straight for cycling the moor they can respond to the draw trigger by extracting loam. The safe line makes them need two surgicals to stop the loam, the greedy line means he needs a second draw to stop a surgical.
@Ahayzo5 жыл бұрын
@@wafflesporq That's fair. I think, having already seen a Surgical that game, I'd still make the play of them not having one, rather than give them an extra chance to draw it. But you're right, I wasn't thinking about cycling in his upkeep

The second game of the first match was really decided on turn 1 when you decided to play Spellbomb instead of leading with Inquisition. If you had played Inquisition you could have played both Spellbomb and Fatal Push on turn 2. Instead you left Inquisition stranded in your hand for two turns, and it could very likely have taken Aria turn 1.

See, I'm an old fart but I'd try and find a way to use Elder Pine of Jukai as a land draw engine. Red-Green then use ramp spells for your sac-lands to fill your graveyard and empty your deck and then your cycling lands to fetch Life from the Loam. As suggested elsewhere Faithless Looting would be good too to help you dig for a win condition and mana ramp spells would help your color balance. Your big issue is the deck doesn't offer a back-up win condition if they have a solution to either half of your combo.

@juhkystar5 жыл бұрын
I think going 4 color Swans dilutes the focus of the deck. There aren't enough lands to combo off, and not playing blue lets the mana base better support grindy options like Lilliana. If you wanted to play a Temur Seismic Swans deck tho, you just swap out the blue card draw and counterspells with Life from the Loam + Commune with the Gods, and slot a Worm's Harvest for resiliency and grind against control. I've found this to be more consistent than the Izzet version, with the downside of being more susceptible to Blood Moon with the mana base.
