Thats so cool you found the shows I grew up with. ! I just love that you like them. I wish I had a time machine to take us back to the 70s. Life and people were really like these actors portrayed them. So easy to make friends and have actual conversations. And being different was accepted , people weren't canceled. You could call a friend across town at 3 am to come help you if your car was broke down and they didn't get mad. People were really nice and friendly and helped each other. Friends couch surfing was a regular thing. It was great !

They spoke a close variation of that in and around the San Fernando Valley of Los Angeles in the late seventies, early eighties too. It was nicknamed 'Valley girl' speak and when I moved there from Michigan in 1979, color me astonished to have met gals who really spoke that way. I thought they were putting me on!

We women in the 70s, never ate, just like Rhoda and Mary Tyler Moore. Thank God I came to my senses and started eating a meal a day and went medium; all my friends have osteoarthritis today and diabetes. I remember taking the flack. Kellogg used to advertise, if you can pinch an inch--it meant you were fat, we were not fat by any means but women lived for men's approval. These deviant men used to ask you during an interview, how much do you weigh? Maybe you could lose more weight. I have photos of seeing every bone in my face, I was skinny like Rhoda, it just wasn't enough then I rebelled and instead of Tab and a tomato and cigarette, I ate a meal a day, that was a big deal. But we also lost our hair, it never came back even with health store help like biotin and Cs, bee pollen, and paying to see a dermatologist who was so expensive. We had no minerals.

I ate . I was a little plump at 14. By 15 it started coming off because I was in heels at all times and extremely active. Later I lost to the point of underweight because of my nerves living with a sadistic sociopath. I couldn't keep anything down. I finally got away from him. That was the early 80s. My poor body was so depleted. Its a wonder I didn't die from lack of potassium. I could only sip water. And lay in bed. I was dying. And my teeth got bad and made me sick. And my hair started falling out. 10 or so years later I started taking 3 handfuls a day of vitamins. My hair looked good. But then traumas hit left and right and my hair has been falling out and my skin dry and pre diabetes. Its awful. I should have stayed on the vitamins. At least I quit smoking in 99 or 2000. The things we did to ourselves or allowed to be done to us or went through. But the 70s were very good for me. Early 80s were awful.

This show really improved after Joe left. More interesting characters were introduced, and storylines really widened out. In my opinion, they married Rhoda off much too soon at the start of the series, and the writers painted themselves in a corner. After Rhoda and Joe got divorced, Rhoda got her independent life back. The show was much improved. I remember really enjoying its original run, when I was a teenager. It still holds up today, in 2024.

Here we go with more too thin, too fat comments about the female players herein; this show took place in the 70s and people STILL can't resist critiquing women's bodies. Is it any wonder that eating disorders are still a national problem, especially for females? How refreshing it is rather to read compliments on Valerie's talent, and Julie's too. About the only remark I think is flattering when it comes to appearance is the one about Nancy Walker's incredibly youthful figure, but even if she was a misshapen lump, it wouldn't diminish her comedic flair. Come on, people, let's focus on what ought to be most germane: the writing and performances!
@g-girl9867
@g-girl9867 3 жыл бұрын
Your opinion is certainly valid and I totally agree. Too much emphasis is on the weight loss for these two. But what I also see is that they lost something along with the weight. They were struggling to stay thin and not happy. Comes across in the acting unfortunately.

Man alive, some of the writing is just lousy this season. A bunch of the episodes seem to be one basic tired formula: character "X" suddenly and temporarily becomes a complete and utter unlikable jerk. They did it when Rhoda became a raging workaholic and forgot Brenda's birthday, they did it when Jack wanted to impress an old friend and treated Rhoda like dirt at dinner, they did it when Rhoda took a class with Brenda and started cheating, etc. Here, Benny instantly transforms into an obnoxious, insufferable, bossy SOB. Not clever, not funny. On a lighter note: Hey, that's Jon Lormer as Mr. Steiner. I enjoyed him in "Creepshow" in 1982 saying "Where's ... my ... cake?" He was on a lot of things-- The Andy Griffith Show, The Twilight Zone, a Mary Tyler Moore Show episode, etc.

+mella mell ? Valerie Harper's eyes are green. Nancy Walker's hair color is red. The rest of the cast has brown hair and brown eyes, the most common eye and hair color.

Benny was a brainless wonder. How could Brenda even communicate with him on any meaningful level? Gary was only a little brighter, and a lot sleazier. Neither guy was a good match for Brenda.

This is, by far, the worst episode in the whole series. Don't get me wrong, I like the series, but I hate it when characters fight with each other. I hated it in I Love Lucy and I hate it in this series too.

people fight sometimes. that is reality. I like the way they always find a good resolution on the series

I like to blame Nancy Lane , the actress , but in a case like this, especially for the build up to the final scene where Brenda and Rhoda are mocking her, the directors and show runners are responsible for that horrible performance .

@@thomasmagnum3588 That's how much I did not like that character... I did not care enough to find out the name of the actress.

The reason Gary was always such a jerk. He was always trying to go out with Rhonda.

The Tina character is annoying and not at all funny. How did she survive the writing room?
