The story of those Nalgene bottles is that Nalgene used to be a manufacturer of lab equipment. Some of the yanks who worked there were also Boy Scout leaders. They ended up using the lab bottles for carrying dry goods such as pancake powder on hiking trips. Eventually they were used as canteen was well. Then the company decided to start marketing them as outdoor accessories. I built a full on picnic kit into one of these gas mask bags. Thanks for the video!

Nice finds Bex! I have trouble getting my hands into the mag pouches. Though, with that permanent pouch style of chest rig, it'd be easy enough to sew together two of the mag pouches and snip out the middle. I'm going to try adding an insert that'll help me pull of the contents of my mag pouches. I found some 500ml water bottles that'll go into the pouches, but a even better fit were collapsible water bottles like runners use. Good experiment with the cook-kit into the webbing. Though, for "layering" purpose I personally try to carry only a minimal cook set on my webbing/rig. Just the minimum if I have stashed the pack.

I too have a minimal light weight cook kit. It will do for an afternoons trek, but I require at least 2 litres of water for a quality overnight camp. Ive fallen big time for the Svea stove now, as I dont always need the extra fuel, as the amount in the tank will give me plenty of burn time for at least a 24 hour trek and camp. The water goes into my ospray bladder, but I love the patern 58 cook mug from the crsader mk1 too. Certainly a lot to choose from mix and match to get the balance of my requirements,, safe camping buddy Bex

Not huge on meths burners so I carry a gas stove or hexi blocks, cut the Crusader 2 set down to metal mug and 58 pat bottle, replaced 58 cup with large Wildo foldacup and put metal mug and 58 bottle in a 44 pattern water bottle pouch (copy) with rest of kit in backpack. I'd like to say it's just the most practical arrangement but many of the Falklands vets used 44 pat canteen kit and pouch when I was a kid and I use any excuse to use any of that bit of kit! I use the pattern 58 mug now, and find I can drink from it while its still hot, perhaps because it stainless steel. so the wildo fold a mug can stay at home for a bit. I use a bladder 3 ltr osprey for an overnighter..the pat 44 bottle sounds intriguing will look into that. ALB Bex

The 44 pattern pouch copies are from Silvermans, brand new for a fraction of the cost and they're pretty good regardless of what the gear snobs say.

I use the austrian field pack the most or the German one,usealy on the back of my webbing with a water bottle pouch etheir side as 1 liter isn't enough like you said, but I've had my eye on the mtp pack for a while and I'm sure I will end up with one im my collection,,, it dose stand out as a name:) I've allways wonderd how the chest rig would do as webbing, and now I know:)

Those elastic bands at the top can hold a tube of cotton wool (for helping to light things) and there should be two soft pouches to go on the sides (very useful for a bit of food, since they fold flat when empty). I used to use one as my bug-out pouch... never thought about using it for the stove though - good thoughts!

Great point about supporting the "Bricks and Mortar" surplus stores. Several in my area have disappeared over the last few years. I now purposely go out of my way to my local store (Nick's Kit in Royton, Oldham). Nick is a real friendly guy and knows his kit and it is all quality kit and I can phone him to see if he has an item in stock or he can get it, so I am not wasting his time and mine as I live 2 buses away (a 3 hour round trip on buses as one of the buses is a rural route, so only hourly).

Holly molley !! 3 hours travel. My nearest surplus shop is about 9 miles away, but I also use a private supps supplier too. Maybe a liitle more in cost to buy, but can purchase with out postage waiting. I now only use the GSr pack for a cook kit, money well spent...Bex

He is about 6 miles away, but the bus from me into Oldham itself, goes around the outlying villages on route, it takes an hour and the bus is only 1 per hour and then I have to change buses for a quick 15 minute journey from Oldham to Royton. But like I said his shop is worth it and if he disappears, that leaves only a surplus shop in Tib Street in Manchester City Centre, but I hate going into the city. There used to be a small decent shop in Stockport, but he went a few years ago, so the local surplus shops are becoming limited. I like that GSR pack size wise, but not keen on MTP, etc. I am still firmly stuck with DPM as it blends in better in my local countryside, as I live literally a 5 minute walk from the Pennine Foothills, so out there a lot, mooching in the valleys and on the hillsides, taking my Crusader 1 out for a brew, etc. .Mark

Yep. The Yugo mess kit squeezes into the P58 water bottle pouch (tested with PLCE and MOLLE versions) but it's a bit tight for my liking. The MOLLE MTP Machine Gun pouch is a much better fit for the Yugo mess kit. The Yugo mess kit is sealed-ish unit so that pouch's lack of a snow collar isn't a problem. Now I carry the Yugo mess kit on my day-walk MOLLE webbing.

hi Neil, the yugo mess tin kit does indeed fit into the chest webbing, and so does the mk2 crusader. It will help take the weight off my back, as the old disks in my back stiffen up these days...Bex

Good video Bex, I have the field pack and use mine with the Swedish cook set and its just perfect. My pack came with 2 side pouches, did you not get them? its a great bit of kit and very well made.

Your right very well made. The GSR Field pack does not come with the side pouches, wich are actually ammo pouches. If youve got one with said pouches youve got a bargain. Mine also fits the German cook set if anyone reads this thread....Be lucky bud Bex

Not tried the crusader in the chest webbing yet. I think not but will give it a go tomorrow and message you about that. The GSR for £7-£9 may be your way foward. The Operators shoulder bag will fit the MK1 but costs more. I,ll leave that with you buddy. Till soon peace Bex

I know I'm massively late to the party on this, but couldn't you put the crusader set in it's original bag and then MOLLE it to the side of the Field Pack? Just an idea as I don't actually have either (yet!)

It would have the capability to so, but why would you want to...? Everything fits in the field pack, including the food rations.

Your "Field Pack/gasmask bag" is missing it's side pouches. Mine came as new with a small pouch on either side, Molle'd on but easily detatchable. The pouches are small enough to take half litre bottles, first aid pack or plastic boxes with teabags etc in them. You should also have a long shoulder strap with a narrow thigh strap as well. Personally I found the top flap fiddly and annoying in that it will not stay open. Also the bag is tapered so that, even when unzipped at the front, it does not hold as much as it looks like it ought to. Good enough for twenty quid brand new, I suppose.

Your missing the updates, I've mollied on a couple of mark 4 SA 80 mag pouches perchased seperately, contianing cat stoves a rat pak and brew kit. Great for a solo overnighter, or fishing with my pals, or a solitary walk in the woods, for the afternoon. I think the strap was off another kit I had at the time. I molle mine to my 60 litre bergen, wich ever way you look at it it's gota be better than the crappy pouch the MK2 Crusader comes with, (I suppose)
