In this episode, we discuss the methods we apply in gaining proficiency in Muay Boran. The ancient approach has been to build a strong foundation and to experience fist-hand learning from a knowledgeable teacher. These two methods are common in all versions of Muay Boran and is something that we put into practice til this day. Obviously, it would be challenging for those who do not have access to a Muay Boran school to learn in person. Which is why we will be providing other types of videos to highlight the importance of working on basics.
These weekly intro lessons are actually mini-lessons that are used by our students to review the current technique being practiced. They are accompanied by working on the fundamentals, drills, transitions, and other exercises. The youtube videos provide a reference point and a basic understanding of what the upcoming technique to be trained will be. It is not a full lesson in it of itself.
Because we have been teaching Muay Boran for many years, we base our curriculum on what has worked for our students in terms of retention, confidence of execution, and having the ability to maintain a strong Muay Boran mindset under pressure. These learning steps are not featured in our intro lessons but we will slowly add supplemental videos to aid our distance learners.
As an option, Muay Boran techniques can be added to other martial arts styles for those who come from other backgrounds. But for those who want to learn Muay Boran from the ground up, then the ancient methods should be put into practice with time invested in building a strong foundation and understanding of techniques through a knowledgeable and reliable source.
