Today we are speaking about the ruleset differences between muay thai and kickboxing. It's far more complex than "in muay thai you can clinch and elbow".

Which ruleset do you like better??? Old school K-1 was my favourite. Not too much clinch but enough. No elbows which I'm fine with. Fast pace action from the opening bell. Catching kicks and sweeping opponents was allowed. Not a fan of kickboxing rules now though.

No elbows sucks. Elbows are a game changer. The ferociousness is not there without them. Old school k-1 was the shit. They should bring back tournament rules.

To watch Old school k1 was awesome had some of my favoirite top 20 fighters of all time, but without the political rubbish. Bad storys of how old k1 used to treat fighters. Between watching old k1 & muay thai (full size gloves) i honestly love both. In terms of training im elbows in & out defensive style in the mid range to long distance long punches, round kicks, teeps so its Muay Thai. Not a fan of the new glory or the mma gloved One championship. @ 102kg 6ft im not using small gloves ill break my hands for sure i have no doubt.

To add to the confusion, sometimes people (also guilty myself) say "kickboxing" as an umbrella term to mean all stand-up striking arts, in that sense Muay Thai is a type of kickboxing, like Sanda, K1 and well "kickboxing kickboxing," kind of like how sometimes people say "England" when they really mean "the whole UK" for convenience.

In Muay Thai, we embrace the art's rich heritage, honoring eight limbs and clinch work. Yet in Kickboxing, we celebrate the fusion of punches and kicks with fewer constraints. Guide us to appreciate Muay Thai's cultural roots and diverse strikes, while recognizing Kickboxing's dynamic movement. In humility, we seek understanding in these martial paths, knowing each carries its unique essence. Amen.

The inconsistency in rules within kickboxing is frustrating - particularly around catching kicks. Some rule sets ban it completely, other allow catch and release with no strike, some a strike, some for a couple of seconds, and all variations in between. Also the variations on clinch rules in kickboxing is annoying.

I’m glad someone finally mentioned this. Too many people I’ve heard from labeled Muay Thai under “kickboxing”, and a gym I visited in town has a list of martial arts (along with the flag of country of origin) its main style is comprised of, and among them is ‘kickboxing’ under a Thai flag.

I absolutely love the insight in this video, now I have a better understanding. See I always thought kickboxing was basically boxing with kicks. What I’m saying is it seemed that Kickboxing still focuses on immaculate head movement, and foot work the way a boxer would. In Muay Thai however it seems like they’re just moving forward and doing damage, and clinching as well as kicking with their shins. Also of course the use of elbows. Most Muay Thai fights I observed is that they don’t really focus primarily on head movement and footwork they way a kickboxer would. I think it’s good to have both in your arsenal though. I have Kickboxing, and Marine Corps martial arts under my belt, and now I wanna try Muay Thai.

I fought in Thailand several times, and a huge difference between Thais and Westerners is that Thais are very kick and clinch-heavy, whereas Westerners like to use hands more. As such, you can beat a local Thai guy with basic boxing, given that you know MT fundamentals like checking kicks and basic clinchwork
@ancientdarkness3102
@ancientdarkness3102 Ай бұрын
Not true that. Muay thai has many ways of countering boxing without using boxing. Moving your head and hand framing when kicking, clinch at close distance, teeps to the legs and body, leg feints, intercepting switch kick, hand traps to elbows and knees and so on.

i think the best scoring would be to judge the entire fight as a whole based on damage. i also prefer 3 rounds but i don't mind 5 if the action starts from the 1st. as for the rules, i'd go with old muay thai rules for muay thai, not the modern one rules, where you aren't even allowed to clinch and for kickboxing with the old school k1 rules, which were basically muay thai rules but without elbows.

I remember my second kickboxing lesson, the instructor said "now I'll show you some elbows techniques" and I objected that elbows where not allowed in kickboxing, then the instructor said "Did you missed what I said during the first lesson? The most important thing I think people dont understand is the scoring criteria. Kickboxing judges dont particularly want to judge your fight for you. A great example is Regian Eersal last fight. It was very even with the exception of the fact he got knocked down. Knockdowns, damage, and the number of clean strikes, and aggression take priority. Sweeps and throws dont get scored especially because they're against the rules. I very rarely see Nak Muays wrap there head around these concepts as they often try to implement ring generalship(hit and dont get hit) tactics and the clinch and become very confused about why they don't win decisions. Its like Ramon Dekkers early days in Thailand where he thought he was getting robbed, which on occasions he was, when he really didn't understand the judges dont care how many punches you scored.

Maybe specify what kind of kickboxing in the thumbnail and beginning if the video, at the very least? Good video nonetheless the less 👍 Wako kickboxing standard full contact does not have knees and low kicks. Only sweeps. They have started adding have their own low kick and k-1 competitions/tournaments lately, but the biggest discipline is still without knees, and it’s pretty damn big still in Europe and many places around the world. It just doesn’t get the same attention from mma fans, and that’s fair I guess.

In summary tho, the answer is that when an elite kickboxer and an elite thai fighter face each other, the outcomes are pretty even and probably depends on the day lol. Imo the best example of this is Superbon’s career so far. He got knocked out hard by Chingiz allazov, but before that he brutally KOd giorgio petrosyan and beat marat grigorian, both of whom beat allazov in the past.

To someone who's not very interested in the competitive side of the disciplines but just the basic gist of them, I do tend to explain Muay Thai as "It's like kickboxing, so punches and kicks, sometimes knees, but in Muay Thai you can also clinch and elbow". To someone interested in learning about the competitive formats of either discipline, it's more like "Bro, it's complicated, how much time have you got?".

Even Ramon need to adapt his Muay Thai skill to fight against Thai fighters at that time.
