How to Make an Old Fashioned

What You Need:
• bourbon
• Angostura bitters
• a sugar cube
• an orange
• ice
• muddler
• spoon
• rocks glass
How You Do It:
1. Drop a sugar cube into the glass.
2. Add a couple dashes of bitters to the cube.
3. Slice off a nice chunk of orange peel.
4. Muddle.
5. Add 2 ounces of bourbon.
6. Stir.
7. Add ice. The bigger the better.
8. Stir again.
9. You’ve just made an old fashioned. Cheers!

It's actually pretty common and some pro's consider it unsightly. Use demerara syrup in place of sugar.

The old fashioned is supposed to get sweeter as you drink it, meaning the sugar is not all the way mixed into the liquor. using syrup is fine but I find most people use too much and the drink is uniformly sweet throughout and often too sweet at that. In the end its all personal preference, but I like it when the drink evolves a bit as I sip it so I do not mind a bit of undissolved sugar at the bottom
