i wanted to make this video to show how these diffs fail. more importantly why they fail. they do not blow up because of reckless use of the throttle. axles should break long before a diff ever does. these failures start right out of the box. the pinion teeth wear thin to the point that they cant handle the stress and then break. if you dont believe me just drain your oil into a clean pail shine a light on it and look at the sparkle. all those tinny little fleck of metal come from some where, and its the pinion teeth. i have eliminated this problem of rapid wear, now the teeth wonnk break and the case will not split apart anymore as the broken teeth fight to stay meshed.
i will be making more vids in this series please sub like comment and share

the outer housing has got to be flexing if those gears are shimmed proper .Its the only part of the equation you have not shown .did you file test the gears to see if they are hardened?
@mentalvmaxrider
@mentalvmaxrider 4 жыл бұрын
Gears aren't heat treated,they're face hardened. Improperly worn parts don't get pitted,it's called galling. Pretty simple fix....ink the gear tooth pattern and adjust backlash. There's no preload to set as they are ball bearing and not tapered roller.....which it actually SHOULD have. If you can find tapered roller bearings to fit the case you're golden.....that diff should last a lifetime. No secrets here,a diff is a diff and since you didn't mention any fixes this video was a complete waste of time.

@@mudNwheels they're the same as any other gear set. There's nothing magical or unique about it. Can am,jlg,cat,jcb,chevy,ford,dodge....the principal is exactly the same.

Nice video. These machines are like work trucks. Need the oil changed more than normal in the differentials. They get abused. If you read up on a rear differential rebuild you are supposed to change the oil just like engine oil after heavy pulling. These ATV with people and in the mud basically haul a load all the time and not to mention larger tires. Most of that pitting is heat and makes the teeth brittle till they brake. Pattern was consistent enough to make a clear mark. So if you want your stock Diff to last then change the oil on a routine maintenance.

I haven't looked into my 11 Can am 800-XT. I checked the oil in the past for water by removing the fill plug and it all looked good. After I read this I changed mine but I have 250 miles on mine. Probably no time for wear anyways but thought more about it bc I have 28" Zillas so I changed my oil and no metal fur nor contaminants. Looked like new oil draining out. Went with 90wt Royal purple for now. Will check every 50hrs with oil change to see if any metal fur shows up this time.

Richard Kertz, hi just reading about these issues as I am looking at a used 2011 800xt and a 2012 Gen2. I understand only 2011xmr were Gen2? Then I read about the Gen 1 limp mode issues and I may just stay away from Can Am. I am thinking you have the Gen 1. Any limp mode or over heating issues? Any advice? Would you buy the 2011 or 2012?

Both my machines are 2012. 800 & 1000. I thought 75/90 was original spec and in 2012 they changed it to 75/140. So is Can am back 75/90 now? Dam I just stocked up on 75/140.

revo3423 According to BRP, the 2014 lineup came with a newly designed differential, with spiral cut gears, instead of the straight cut gears in this video. They went that route, because it was quieter. So, this wouldn't actually pertain to you, as yours is more like the gen 3, rather than gen 2.

FTORC1 the xmr 1000 has helical gears. the short outty and renegade 2012 to 2014 have the same diff with bevel gears. in 2015 the regular g2 diff was redesigned but still with the same style of bevel gears. so far i have rebuilt to 2015 g2 diffs. the problem that i correct with my rebuilds is still there

People, it’s not the shitty heat treatment that everyone is talking about, or the so called flexing housings, or even the oil itself for the most part. The reason for all the failures is the INCORRECT SHIMMING of the crown gear in the housing. See those two little shims on each side????? Get it apart and re shim it properly then put good quality oil and forget about. That’s the secret!
@mudNwheels
@mudNwheels 5 жыл бұрын
you are correct but there is more to it than just the pre load and back lash shims. prelaod of the pinion bearings and pinion depth also play a big role. knowing how all of these settings affect each other is key

The problem is can am should be using helical cut gears not straight cut gears in there diffs. Helical cut gears are quite and have more tooth contact at all times making them a lot stronger. Straight cut gears pull on one tooth at a time causing noise and excessive wear on teeth. It's just a cheap way to build a diff and F the consumer.
@mudNwheels
@mudNwheels 8 жыл бұрын
i tend to disagree yes spiral bevel gears are stronger and quite, however i have been building these diffs for more than 2 years now with huge success. my builds reduce the noise and wear and have bee running strong in the toughest conditions that i have tested them in. the xmr 1000 diff uses the spiral bevel gear and they still fail prematurely from stock. i also build these diffs with better than factory results. in fact this on of my strongest sellers.

Looks like quality control and durability of these diff gears are not a real priority for Can Am. Seen to many of these failures and then being told that it is not covered under warranty as it is suspected abuse. Well, if things were engineered, tested, put together correctly at the factory this stuff should never happen under any type of normal to moderate wear. Come on Can Am, fess up and admit to a total failure here.
