@Gábor Králik Gio is a Ferrari academy driver and Ferrari put him in that seat. Also Hulk is not cheap. Same reason Haas didn't replace Grosjean with Hulk this season. Hulk is better, but he's expensive. But yeah I don't think Gio will be staying in F1.

Brilliant analysis. I have to say though that I cant blame one driver for this. Its a mix of circumstances that lead to this: The late safety car lights, the long straigt, and a bit of poor judgement from 2 or 3 drivers in the mid pack. The easiest way to avoid this is turning off the lights on the safety car earlier.

If you want to blame a driver, blame Kvyat. In a restart everyone looks at the car ahead of him to launch at the same time. Kvyat was the first one to open a gap, accelerate into a slow group, and brake.

If the pack was properly bunched up, this doesn't happen. The onus is on the race directors to give the leader adequate time and space to do so.

Masi should have simply let them do another lap by not waving the green flag if they don't line up properly, as I heard from someone who knows the rules better than I do. He's in charge ultimately, so it's also his fault.

There are examples from other formula and series of the restart being aborted through flags and there not being enough time to communicate it to the drivers so those at the back smash into those at the front. It would have been far more dangerous to do that.

He's really good at explaining but, for a F1 driver, this is not complicated stuff. These drivers study throttle and brake tracers after every session - not to mention much more complicated data. That side of their skillset is really underappreciated. They all need a certain level of technical understanding to even be able to communicate with the engineers.

Looking at the graph one can see Kvyat has accelerated strongly but only for a brief period while Russell did it for way too long yet Kvyat gets the blame. What a yoke. Also Russell left more space to the car in front which is also a contributing factor.

"Quickly" would actually be the proper word here 👍 Maybe you're Japanese...but "hayai" has two different meanings in English. "Early" is the opposite of "late", and "quick" is the opposite of "slow".

Everyone at the back, including Romain Grosjean, was blaming Valtteri Bottas for slowing them all down suddenly, yet it's their own fault not keeping up when he was keeping a slow pace approaching the straight. That safety car really messed it up too.

Spot on analysis .. I give it 99% ... the 1% I'm still missing from this is the inclination of the track right around where the confusion got complete ... the guys who thought race was go, had not only limited view of what was going on ahead due to a big rear wing right in front of them (at least those that weren't napping), but also they were in a pit coming up on the crest and then ... carnage .. it's like a blind corner there ... that didn't help either. But I agree .. 1) SC lights 2) Kvyat gap 3) Gio gap Why on earth all others got reprimanded .. I have no idea ..

Nice analysis Jolyon, as always, but I think you missed a key factor in this restart crash : due to the track topology, drivers just can't see at the start/finish line area when they enter the straight. Therefore, they have hard time looking at the front of the pack and they rely more than usual on the 1 or 2 guys just in front. That track specificity was not anticipated by the drivers, and hardly noticed by the observers... ;)

My comment when I saw it live was that it looked like a IndyCar restart gone kablooy and that the biggest problem was the lack of rolling starts and restarts in Europe. Most racing series in the United States use rolling starts and restarts thus getting far more practice at them. Great analysis of the incident.
