This was used in the movie "Ghost". Nobody sings it like Bobby Hatfield. RIP Bobby. This song was written in 1955 for a movie called "Unchained". Live performance. No auto tunes. His mom was in the audience and he had a cold. The Righteous Brothers were known at Blue-Eyed Soul. We had great music way back when. This was 58 years ago. He just opens his mouth and it flows. No strain. He had two children, Bobby Jr. and Kalin. Bobby passed away in 2003 a couple weeks after The Righteous Brothers were inducted into the Rock 'N' Roll Hall of Fame.

I was 23 when Bobby sang Unchained Melody on The Andy Williams Show. It was the Valentine’s Day special and he was dressed to the nines! Every woman in American who heard Bobby sing fell in love with him that night. The song was written in 1955 for the film Unchained. It was about a man who was incarcerated and longing for his wife and children, wondering if they would be there when he got out. This explains the odd name for a love song. The film didn’t do well at the box office but the song was a hit. It has been used in countless venues, but Bobby’s live version was the absolute best! He was a true counter tenor so he wasn’t singing falsetto. RIP Bobby. PS I really enjoyed your respectful response and calm demeanor. Sometimes young people don’t really get the songs we older folks grew up with. But, your appreciation is very much appreciated. I am now 80 and still love this song! 🥰

Here it is close to Valentines Day again..and you educated me about the timing close to Valentine's Day back in 1965...the years the first Baby Boomers were graduating from HS...and some going off to Viet Nam, leaving their first real loves at home. (The US Army and Marines were as afraid of "Dear John" letters..as they were of charlie.) This song is tied into millions of American's hearts and souls. And Bobby and his obvious love of this song...are right there at the center of it all.

This is Bobby Hatfield, on every album, one of them would do a solo, this was one of Bobby's. He is a "counter tenor," one of the rarest of singing voices! The song "Unchained Melody" came out in a movie called "Unchained" in 1955. And the first person to sing it was the First African American Opera Singer, Mr. Todd Duncan. This song has had over a fifteen hundred artists singing it and about six hundred and seventy something sang it in multiple languages as well. It was the most played song of the Twentieth Century in all of America and the UK. As time went on it was played in several movies but it really, regained popularity in 1990 in the movie "Ghost" with Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg. And the movie was also bad ass. Anyway the song "Unchained Melody" lyrist Hy Zaret and the melody was by Alex North. Like I said before many, many artists have sang this song including Linda Ronstadt and even Elvis Presley but the best version in my opinion was the original singer Mr. Todd Duncan and next to him needless to say was Mr. Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. Nobody as far as I know has done it better. He really killed it. Now you know why the type of music that the Righteous Brothers is labeled "Blue Eyed Soul". For obvious reasons of course. To this day the only person who does have a so-called "perfect pitch" though is Mariah Carrie. They just don't make beautiful romantic love songs like this anymore do they? I was born during their height -- my mother absolutely melted at their voices. Dad was an officer in the Air Force so this time frame was a time of men and women being separated with the very real possibility of ever seeing each other again up in the air. So true Ophelie. Bobby's 58 yr old performance is being heard and seen for the first time by these "Reactors"...with many knowledgeable and supportive "Comments" being made. But seldom mentioned (as you have)...the history and context of the "time frame" this amazing piece of human emotion...was recorded. The "Boomers" are passing...and thankfully the following generations are again witnessing this phenominal performance. (It's hard to believe this performance was recorded in such amazing quality!) But you can see the legacy and full emotional impact on the Boomers...Bobby Hatfield's 1965 cover of Unchained Melody...is dimming. Your 5 or 6 pitches was exactly right. He went 5 notes up the pentatonic scale, then one more to arrive at the same note he started at but one octave (or 5 steps plus 1) higher.

This live performance on the Andy Williams show in 1965 has a more dramatic ending than the studio recording that was the original hit and became a big hit again after being featured in the movie, Ghost, in 1990. I always loved the original song, but this ending absolutely blew me away when this video popped up on my phone 3 years ago.

All art is subjective & music is a form of art. Okay, now for a little song history info: "Unchained Melody" was writteb by Alex North & Hy Zarat in 1955 for a little known movie called "Unchained". Todd Duncan, an African- American opera singer from back in the day, is/ was the one who first sang "Unchained Melody" & it was in a prison scene in the movie "Unchained". Roy Hamilton did a cover version of this song shortly after, also in 1955, and it was Roy Hamilton's version that remained to be both Bobby Hatfield's & Elvis's favorite version. The latter is according to Bill Medley which he revealed in an interview. Bill Medley is the other "Righteous Brother" who was/ is the bass- baritone to Bobby Hatfield's counter- tenor. Bill Medley was friends to both Bobby & Elvis (Presley). The Rigteous Brothers were quite simply great in my opinion. For duets by them, do check out "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling", "You're My Soul & My Heart's Inspiration", and "You'll Never Walk Alone". For another great solo by Bobby Hatfield: "Ebb Tide". For two great solos by Bill Medley: "I Just Wanna Make Love To You" & "Brown- Eyed Woman". Others I am sure will make other suggestions. The the story goes, early in their career the Righteous Brothers played for a black audience (it was illegal in that region at that time because of segregation). After the show someone from the audience approached them and said, "You brothers are righteous". It was a huge compliment. They felt so honored, they chose to preform as the Righteous Brothers from that day forward.

Bobby Hatfield, who is originally from Wisconsin, is deceased. I saw the Righteous Brothers at the Crystal Grand in Lake Delton, Wisconsin just months before Bobby passed away. There stage show was hilarious. Bill Medley still sings professionally at 80.

From an "old guy" ... glad you liked it and yeah, good on you for both recognizing the song (you hear it in "Ghost" BTW) and Bobby Hatfield's vocal range; that's a "high C" at the end ...few can do that. I'd also point out what you failed to catch even though your "youth" should have in the "MTV Generation" ... the yellow globe stage lights when he gets to the verse about "flow to the Sea" ... even in 1965 they knew what they were doing ... the pan out was AMAZING !!! Also, you didn't catch the "biting of the lower lip" at the end ... back story, his Mom was in the audience and the first time she saw him perform "live" ... and he knew he nailed it !!! Bobby's voice is known as counter-tenor. ( He was still able to use his childhood higher voice which is different to falsetto, which Barry of the Bee Gees uses). Bobby used to become extremely nervous before singing (including vomiting) and had a heavy cold when singing this song which I have loved for 56 years. He had a big vocal range and was a master of singing.

This song came out the year I was born.. I know word for word because all their songs were so popular when I was growing up. My son was born in 1992, I have 7 sisters all older than my the oldest by 11 years, that was his favorite auntie, she taught him every word to Al the RB songs. the song was originally from a movie in 1955 called "Unchained." it was a 10 years old song by he time Bobby Hatfield sang it. But this live version is miles above the recorded version. No one, not even Elvis ' version can touch this. the Ghost movie was NOT about this song, the song stands on it's own merit long before Ghost.

My understanding’s is the song was written for a 1955 movie Unchained about a prisoner about to be let out. Three other artists recorded it in 1955 and all were in the charts. The Righteous Brothers recoded it on the B Side, flip side of another song. Looks like the B side is the one remembered.

You heard in the movie Ghost. But I grew up with this music, “blue eyed soul” these guys were fabulous and Bobby Hatfield had the most incredible voice, up and down the scales perfectly. Remember this performance was Live he was flawless. My favorite of all time. Love love love ❤️

I was 11 when this song came out. Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley we’re meant to be together! I enjoyed your reaction and would like to see more. “You’ve lost that Loving Feeling .” , “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” Soul and Inspiration, and another solo by Bobby is Summertime. All great songs and I listen to them to this day. But now I have to put my hearing aids in. LOL enjoy all of these!

This is THE LIVE Performance of all time. This is Bobby Hatfield (RIP) and this live performance was in 1965 - BEFORE auto tune or any other computer-assisted enhancements. His 3-octave range is amazing and he gets into upper soprano range effortlessly maintaining tone quality. This is the performance of the song you have heard since you were a kid. Elvis didn't do it until 1977 or 1978, and has been done a few times by others since then. Bobby is 1/2 of the duo The Righteous Brothers. The other 1/2 is Bill Medley with a deep, rich baritone. Their harmony together is superb.

The best live performance I’ve ever seen on a stage with a tiny mic. Bobby was a countertenor, it’s not falsetto. His control, his range, the one he puts in every note is palpable. It truly feels like he is making love to all the women in the audience, and I don’t think there’s a woman who heard that whose heart did not start beating faster. He can move from one octave who won mother with absolutely no strain. He is pitch perfect like velvet. I love them and they voted him number 25 male soloist in the century. I think he’s number one, but that’s all right. He is just phenomenal, I thank you very much for reviewing and reacting.
