Travel tip from a local Brazilian/American : Learn as much as you can about a foreign country before you go there and when you get there, if you feel adventurous, ask a local if it's a good idea. Lots of videos and social media accounts to help you. Brasil is beautiful and dangerous but a little common sense would have gone a long way in avoiding all that trouble. Favelas are not tourist attractions and wandering into one can get you killed. He was naive and lucky! It made me happy to know he was able to see beyond that traumatic experience and enjoy his visit! Stay safe y'all!!

The guy saying how “unlucky” he was made me laugh, I don’t think he really grasped the situation. He was incredibly LUCKY that he was only mugged by some kids, rather than being kidnapped and taken for ransom or straight up murdered. Not only that, it wasn’t “just being unlucky” that got him in that situation - the whole thing was entirely avoidable if he’d had a little bit of common sense. Happy it wasn’t worse, and that he was able to enjoy his trip regardless of that traumatic experience, but some of the things he said really rubbed me the wrong way.

About the first story: I'm from Brazil. Me and my husband (that is from Europe) went to Brazil a few months ago to visit. Brazil situation now is not the best at all. Poverty is growing huge and people are just desperate to get money even if it means stealing (which is not right, i agree). Before we went, I gave him "the talk". Brazil is a beautiful country but being raised there made me not be that "silly". Genuinely, I think the guy just could use a bit more information. With my husband I told him: do not bring too much stuff out, NEVER show your phone when on the streets, lets avoid certain areas and etc. On ubers as well, he never spoke one word which was quite awkward all the time so we just decided to get normal Taxis because it's just way safer and usually the same price. Myself, being out of Brazil for 3 years, got shocked when I came back to see how dangerous and fucked up the country became. My advice for whoevers is visiting Brazil is just be careful and make sure to read a LOT and ask on brazilian communities around internet about how to be safe and etc. I'm glad that he was ok at the end, but be careful next time. It wasn't your fault anyways. This could happen anywhere, trust me.

Sometimes I listen to these stories and get frustrated. A lot of privileged people don't prepare their kids for the real world AT ALL. I've never lived in a ghetto, but I'm black and from the South. My parents sat me down multiple times and made sure I had sense. They didn't sugarcoat anything, and it didn't scare me. I knew that if I wanted to keep my body and life intact, I needed to have sense. The story about the girls getting into the vehicle with the guys is frustrating too. That's why I don't make friends with certain kinds of people, especially women who are trying to get laid with strangers (Alice) (and I say "women" because my guy friends trying to get laid aren't gonna take me along on such a endeavor). In these stories, people think strangers are creepy but wave at them; they talk and play polite with creeps; they isolate themselves when they sense they're in danger; they "didn't think much of" anything; they go places with obvious predators; and so on. Like they have a subconscious death wish or something; or maybe their lives are too safe, so they want to experience some "excitement." Well, when you have to worry about even the cops preying on you, you learn to question everything and keep your head on a swivel. Some people don't know just how vulnerable they are. I now live in one of the safest countries in the world, and I don't take anything for granted even now. You can always tell either the privileged or the dumb based on how they act in these stories. That's why I'm at the point of actually clapping when people are smart in these stories, because it feels like that so much rarer.

It sounds like the person has no common sense. They're lucky to be alive. This is true anywhere - even you're own neighborhood. It shouldn't be, but it is. Humans. That typed, do you really think this story is true? It lost me at the beginning with "and then I hitched to the airport" and consistently went downhill from there. Even the parents sending their child to a foreign country (one known to be unsafe, at that) on their own as a graduation present seems suspect. I don't believe it. One thing after another. If the story is true, I'd be surprised.

@@Ariplaygames - I don't know. Most of the stories here and on comparable channels come from Reddit groups. I think people submit content because they want to be part of the group, enjoy writing or want attention. Some of these groups are just for stories - They can be fiction. That's my issue. Videos like this put a blanket "true" on the stories, even if they aren't from a forum for which the stories are supposed to be true (which usually have no verification). Just call them stories.

Because they're privileged enough not to live in the real world. Privilege is probably nice, but it doesn't prepare you for the real world. The same umbrella covering the behavior of a percentage of men subsequent to values instilled (directly or indirectly) via society, also covers that same group from reporting or discussing issues they've experienced.
