That final slow motion shot shows just how much Liston’s head is deflected by the punch. Best view of it I’ve ever seen. I’m now convinced Liston was hit hard. It is usually I’m possible to estimate how effective a particular punch is from watching it on a screen or even in person. The viewing angle can make it look more or less an obvious knock out punch. It is well to remember that heavyweights punch the hardest but the vulnerability to a knockout stays about the same as weight class increases. Some fighters have less knockout jaws: Dempsey Marciano. Others like Patterson a bit of a glass jaw. I saw the 2nd Patterson Johansen in the Bronx and Patterson put the Swede out for about 5 minutes. The extremely pro Patterson crowd got quieter and quieter until Johansen stood up. In the next fight they knocked other down repeatedly with Patterson’s glass jaw on full show. I wish I’d seen that one!

I was about 13 at the time and remember that when the questions came up about the "phantom punch" that the president of the British Karate Association wrote a letter to a newspaper that was picked up throughout the English-language press saying that Ali's punch hit a known knock-out spot, just behind the ear, if I recall correctly, and that he, the karate president, was not surprised in the slightest at how it decked Liston.

Look at Ali's physique in the photo. Add reach, lightning evasion and counterpunches = goodnight everyone else. The phantom punch was lightning fast with the whole torso thrown into it and caught Liston as he missed with his attack, a very vulnerable time. Easy to say he took a dive but we didn't feel the blow. His arms pushing against the mat on the way down means he didn't want to go down. The second fall means he was still dizzy and the timekeeper counted him out.

Now the only other time I remember the anchor punch being used to ko another opponent was Big George Foreman. In the 8th round the commentator referred to it as "a sneaky right hand" and Muhammad landed (3) of them in succession and a left 👊🏾right 💥left combo 🥊and the GOAT regained his championship status.

But regarding the Foreman fight, Ali didn't throw that "Phantom Punch." It was a one-two combination that knocked George down. But the truth is that George went down more so from the exhaustion of swinging himself out after eight rounds more than anything else. George actually beat the count and got up before the ref counted 10 but it was still ruled a KO.

I disagree, but it sure is debatable. Knock outs often occur because the guy getting knocked out does not see the punch coming, and this could be what happened here. No way to be sure, of course, but Ali always claimed it was the particular angle he hit him with that made it possible to be a knock-out.

And btw, when did referees start taking orders from timekeepers regarding the count? First of all, referees don’t count in exact seconds they count in numbers up to 10 and it’s their count that determines win or loss, not the timekeeper’s clock. Plus Liston was up in less than 8 seconds by this video at which time, to my knowledge, the count would have stopped. A sham is correct.

Ali almost surely would have beaten Liston legitimately in the later rounds. He was younger and faster and more fit. That's obvious by looking at the action here. But for those who believe that this was a legitimate knockout punch -- no. No. He did not legitimately knock Sonny Liston out in the first round with that punch. You're behaving like fanboys, not boxing fans. How many other times in his career did Ali simply flatten someone with an "anchor punch" that was scarcely visible other than in slow motion? How many other first-round knockouts did Ali have over the course of his career (one -- Jimmy Robinson). Why in the world would Ali bother to become a master of footwork, able to tire his opponents out over the course of an extended fight, if he has this secret weapon in his arsenal that enables him to score first-round knockouts at will? Was he getting paid by the hour? By the number of punches that he took? No. Ali himself didn't believe the dive -- that's why that classic photo shows him shouting at Liston and demanding that he get up -- which, in fact, Liston did and as Howard Cosell noted, he was still displaying good reflexes. My God! Look at how Liston starts to get up and then "collapses" again in a fashion that might not have ashamed a professional wrestler but then resignedly gets up again and starts to fight again after Ali fails to retreat into a neutral corner preventing Walcott from starting the count. Ali would have won this fight anyway, but to believe in this charade is to believe in the tooth fairy.

Ali 1962 - 1967 could have beat any fighter in any time, the combination of speed, power and strategy + head movement and his chinvs ability to recieve punches makes him able to face and defeat any kind of fighter at any level Ali 1972-1975 also was near of that but some fighters like marciano may have had some chance to beat him at that time Ali 1969- 1972 and 1976 - 1981 has done nothing but reducing Ali's invincibility, the first period was due to his 3 years being away from boxing and the last period was due to age and heavy punishment from frazier, foreman and norton by that tim
