Whoever She is in Ireland {Pe in Eirinn} In pleasant glens of learning I dwell Trapped each day in a painful faint The bright old woman of great affection Frighted me, Whoever she is in Ireland, Whoever she is in Ireland. I did not mention the partner of Naoise Who equated the slaughter of the Irish to the Cross Nor the child from Greece who tormented Tory, For the love of my heart, Whoever she is in Ireland.Whoever she is in Ireland. At noon when I go to Finn's Seat, Sad and lonely with none of my company, Who does the Son of God send to me, But the love of my heart, Whoever she is in Ireland.Whoever she is in Ireland. Her tress is nice, lovely and emulous, Also the top of the grass in swaths of spirals Her gentle head of hair like fleece' Has the love of my heart, Whoever she is in Ireland.Whoever she is in Ireland. I am sad ,stubborn, tearful, Miserable, consumed and crucified by the woman, At times, subdued without a partner in lust, With the love for the woman, Whoever she is in Ireland.Whoever she is in Ireland. My handwriting is not adequate, And, alas, my English is not sufficiently perfect, My text in tender Irish is not sweet enough, That I might praise my woman, Whoever she is in Ireland.Whoever she is in Ireland.

@@Geordun You don't have to understand - music transcends all that. I'm Irish and half-understand, but lucky you who listen with fresh undoctored ears. Lucky me too!

Sir, (Litir chuig an Irish Times) There was some talk at one stage (before my time) of having the song Pé in Éirinn Í as a national anthem. The words and music are superior to Amhrán na bhFiann in every respect. Indeed, it is one of many Irish folk songs which some musicologists would properly call a Kunstlied, or art song - and one of the finest of its type. A cursory internet search reveals wonderful interpretations of this golden song from such musical luminaries as Muireann Nic Amhalibh, Na Casaidigh, Pádraig Ó Cearbhaill and Séamas Begley. Apart from its astonishing beauty, it fills the appreciative listener with its eternal harmonies - in contrast to the belligerence and crassness of the current anthem. I would love to see it adopted. One slight disadvantage it may have is that it could very easily bathe the souls of rugby players and their followers in such mellifluousness that the very thought of tackling another human being, even in sport, would melt away in the ether.

Absolutely not The National anthem is the best song we have I would never wish to see it changed Completely different sentiments in this one. It 's a beautiful song well sung but definitely not an anthem

@@vincentconway8384 Le gunna scréach faoi lámhach na bpiléar. It still sounds like an incitement to violence. Should we take over DAVY stockbrokers and other institutions flying the flag for Ireland? OK, go ahead. As long as there's no shots fired.

Pé in Éirinn í : I ngleannta séimhe na héigse a bhím, I bhfanntais péine i ngéibh' gach laoi, An tseanbhean ghlé ba bhéasach gnaoi, Do scanraigh mé, pé in Éirinn í, pé in Éirinn í. Ní thráchtfaidh mé ar chéile Naoise, A thug ár na nGael ar théacht don Chraobh, Ná an bháb on nGréig a chéas an Traí, Le grá mo chléibh, pé in Éirinn í, pé in Éirinn í. Is brá, deas, dréimreach, réidh a dlaoi, go barr an fhéir ina slaod ar bís; A tláthfholt réidh de dhéalramh an flíos, Ar ghrá mo chléibh, pé in Éirinn í, pé in Éirinn í. Ar nóin nuair a théim ar thaobh Suí Finn Faoi bhrón i gcéin is gan aon de mo bhuíon Cé sheolfadh Aon Mhac Dé i mo líon Ach stór mo chléibh, pé in Éirinn í, pé in Éirinn í. Le barra mo mhéar ní léir dam scriobhadh 'S im theangain, mo léann, níl Béarla cruinn Ní blasta mo théacs, i nGaolain chaoin Le n-a molfainn mo bheith, pé in Éirinn í, pé in Éirinn í. Helpful tip: you can detect whether a language is Irish, Scottish Gaelic, or Manx from the presence of fadas (or the lack thereof) in the written texts. Irish fadas: á, é, í, ó, ú Scottish Gaelic fadas: à, è, ì, ò, ù Manx language has NO fadas. NOTE: Canadian Gaelic OR Cape Breton Gaelic (Gàidhlig Chanada), which is spoken in the Highlands and islands of Canada by approximately 4000 people, is an old dialect and the people use both fadas in their sentences (e.g. Siùdaig Mhór)
