Disney Plus released the new Mulan (2020) recently, so I decided to check out the new remake. While I liked it more than The Lion King...it's pretty bad. I get into it here.

If you're like Mulan, born with extraordinary gift and talent, you'll rise through the ranks, become a hero and serve your government with utmost loyalty. But if you're like Mulan's sister, very ordinary with no outstanding traits, you best be adhering to the norm and be married off to some unknown man. that's some really good examples for the younger girls, huh Disney?

Why would they change Mulan INTO a Marry Sue? She's the most badass Disney princess and doesn't need 'Chi' to do that, as the story progresses she learns and grow and BECOMES powerful.
@Pomagranite167
@Pomagranite167 3 жыл бұрын
And not even that. She goes to the army and learns to do well to bring honour to her family and to protect her father. In this version, she was already born with honour, and she can already protect anything and anyone because she's mAgIcAL. There was no reward here. No stakes. In the animated movie, it was an actual life or death situation, being either her father goes to battle and dies, she goes to battle and dies, or she goes to battle learns to do well in order to successfully serve her country and protect her family. 🙄 havent watched any of the disney remakes, and i'm not planning on it either 😑

Mulan is honestly one of my favorite Disney princesses (besides Tiana) since she's not considered a "perfect flawless girl" from the start. she has to actually work hard to get the title of a warrior, which makes her more relatable to everyone. then Disney fucked all that up :/

Yeah, the character didn't really grow, did she? She was strong to begin with, then she apparently got weaker by dressing as a man because it messed up her chi (and even so, she was still stronger and better than 99% of the men in the army), then she took off her disguise, at which point she went back to her baseline strength and beat up everyone. Compare that to the original Mulan, who started out as quick-witted but weaker than the men in the army, but by diligent work, she became as good, if not better than most of them, and yet at the end of the movie it wasn't her strength and military training that saves the day, but her quick thinking. One story says, "If you work hard, you can fix your weaknesses while retaining your strengths, allowing you to gain recognition even if societal norms usually wouldn't allow it", the other story says "You are born special and better than everyone else from the get go, so you have no weaknesses. You go girl!" One leads to a memorable and relatable character, the other is the mold from which Mary Sues emerge.

@@Horvath_Gabor Yeah. It's literally that in this movie, sexism win. I mean, it's clearly defines that no other woman can do what Super-Mulan here can. So the sexist, supressive system was right, wasnt it? Cause no one can ever replicate what Mulan did. She's just a Godly figure. No one can repeat her feats, that's clearly defined. SHES DEFINED AS THE EXCEPTION, so yeah, the Sexists were right about woman, apparently? Your born special or you're born male, there is no other option. If you're born female but not super-special, you're a nothing. Says this movie. Doctor Who actually says something surprisingly similar. It's also about being chosen - Decisions never matter... wanting to be good does not matter.

I also don’t understand how they can lose the central “girl power” element of the movie. You can’t say a woman can be more than be a pretty face and stand on her own, but then undercut it by implying you basically need to be magical for it to work, you’re really reinforcing that it’s not possible. It’s like them misunderstanding feminism in the context of a super hero movie, vs being an empowered strong woman IRL 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Jonah Ruiz I’m not saying it isn’t for cold hard cash. You don’t think people profit off of social activism? I’m saying what made the Disney movie so special and impactful (aka lucrative) was that message. To just throw it away for no real reason, makes zero sense. It’s not like there wasn’t going to be sufficient time for special effects and stunts if they had just made her a normal warrior.

The thing is, in their attempt to make this movie more "woke" they ruined the positive female protagonist. In the original, Mulan was a normal girl who was being true to herself and by sheer determination and smarts, she prevails and saves China. In the remake, Mulan is not a normal girl, she was born with supernatural powers. So it wasn't what she chose to be, it was who she was born to me. This RUINS the positive message to children everywhere, but more especially the girls. The original: "Girls, you can be just as good as the boys if you try hard and use your head!" The Remake: "Girls, you can only be as good as the boys if you're magic!"

Well actually, in the original Chinese ballad, Mulan already knew how to fight, and was taught martial arts, sword fighting, and archery, thanks to her father and she didn't really need to be trained before being recruited in the war Also one of the things that Disney got wrong with both of the animated and live-action, is that it didn't take weeks/months for her to fight in the army, It was for 12 years

What annoys me the most of this movie is the fact that they had to make her the ‘chosen one’ trait. I felt that it took away most of the significance put into why people loved Mulan in the first place (especially girls like me). She was a regular girl who has flaws, living with her family that she loves so much. And even though she lived in an era where honour was really important, It did not stop her from becoming a warrior that everyone respected. Mulan knew she’s a girl, she knew that her flaws are evidence of disappointing her family, she even beats herself about it through song! Knowing that, in the end, she still went out to save her father, she also went out to find and prove her worth in herself that hopefully would make her family proud, training day and night if she had to. Someone may beat you down, but your worst enemy is yourself and you have to overcome that, no one else. Now tell me how more realistic and relatable is someone who live-action, is the chosen one? What are you telling me, Disney? Reality-check were humans (unlike someone who has spidey-sense), we don't got Mulan's chi, even the trilogy of Kung fu Panda understood that! we're not dumb. So don't go patronizing us

Chi isnt magic its like a spiritual thing in girls and boys. Think of it as blood, all humans have it. The directors did an awful job explaining it. I hate that the movie now shows "you have to be the the chosen one" like come on one of the reasons I enjoyed the original mulan so much is the fact that the plot explained that you dont need super natural powers or to be born strong to get where you want to be. That first scene in animated Mulan is actually even crazier and deeper in it's tone shift. They are singing "A girl worth fighting for" And when they come to the Hun village, they find the doll of a little girl who was obviously killed in the raid on her village. "A girl worth fighting for" suddenly shifts in message from a light hearted song about winning a girl you love and romance, to one about stopping the Huns from slaughtering their children. Up there with Hellfire from Hunchback for one of the darker moments in a Disney animated feature. That scene alone is more powerful and meaningful than the entire new live action.

It’s so sad what Disney has become one of Walt Disney’s quotes is “we don’t make movies to make money, we make money to make movies” and that’s not true anymore if it was Disney wouldn’t be making remakes they would be coming up with new ideas and story’s they would put their heart and soul into every minute of the movies like they used to. Now that Disney owns basically everything it’s like they don’t really care anymore. Take frozen 2 for example. The story is messy, it doesn’t fit with the first one and lacks originality.

In Coco the protagonist is a kid who wants to play music but his family forbids him because of some past events, so he steals a guitar from a grave and gets banished in the land of the dead, and has to return back before dawn or he'll remain dead. I actually recommend to watch both, I'm not mexican, not even close to Mexico (I'm italian!) so I'm not sure wich one did a better job in portraying mexican culture but both movies are well made and enjoyable imo, they deserve a watch.

From the start, I didnt mind that they took out Mushu and the songs. The way I was told it was suppose to be a retelling of the "Legend of Mulan" myths, fables, and poems. I was fine with that. I was also fine that they wanted to go a more "realistic" like portrayal and have a "all asian" cast. What I'm not fine with is that Disney tried and sell this movie for $30 ontop of your Disney+ account and then used "martial art techniques" like from Kung Fu Panda and Crouching Tiger. And on top of that put a witch in their "realistic" mulan movie. Like if the Mongols could run up walls with ease, then the whole point of building "The Great Wall of China" pretty much useless.

The whole point of Mulan’s story is showing how she’s born to be a quiet, graceful girl and an obedient wife, but fights for a different future. The whole point is that she’s not special, but she has a spark of a goofy, clumsy, tomboy personality, which then leads her onto great things. But the remake hands power to her on a silver platter, destroying the morals of her having to fight and work hard to become a more than just a woman. And hell, she doesn’t even fight to become stronger on purpose. She joins the army to save her father, not to prove herself to anyone. She kind of stumbles into her full potential, rather than chases it, which I think is awesome, and makes the whole tale lighthearted. Mulan is supposed to be about becoming more powerful from making your own decisions and being brave enough to let your true heart shine through. And the story can apply to either girls OR boys! They made the story about a boring, serious character who uses superhuman magical powers to fight off magic witches and be a feminist :( As a teenage girl who’s been greatly inspired by Mulan since I was a little girl and loved the lightness and humour of her story, it’s disappointing and heartbreaking that they butchered something so great. I'm honestly confused by the decision about Mulan's abilities. Someone will say "herp derp SJW ruined everything" but i don't think that's right because the original was already a pretty "empowering" movie BUT it was also really clever about it. Mulan in the animated movie is not insanely strong or some kind of super-warrior, she is just smart, every victory comes from her mind (understanding how to climb the pole during the training, causing the avalanche, sneaking up in the palace etc...). I'm pretty sure that the only time she "fight" in the animated movie is when she disarm the main antagonist before he gets blow up by a firework. So if the intention was really to be more empowering...well the end result is actually the opposite.

@@someguy2016 Honestly both extremes ruin everything... studios should just ignore loud minorities (both SJW and anti-SJW) and just focus on good stories. That being said i still have no idea about the logic behind this change since, like everyone knows, the original was already an "empowering movie" and it did it better.

Well that’s my gripe with Disney at the moment. They already had it right the first time but their writers now just seem incapable of giving female characters arcs and instead just make them special and perfect from the beginning. The problem is they aren’t about equality as much as they are just about checking a box so they lazily make these characters so they can claim empowerment without actually developing them. Unfortunately groups like SJWs tend to praise these characters even when they are terrible which Disney is banking on. Im black and I see it all the time with black characters too. Tyler Perry’s movies are shit but because he’s a black movie director most black people will go praise it anyways. We shouldn’t just want to be there. We should want better treatment.

Hong Kong is on a continuous loss of autonomy to Mainland China's Government and the CCP. While I agree that police brutality in the States is a major issue that needs reformation immediately, it is not "one thousand" times worse than in Hong Kong, and by no means is this some sort of propaganda conspiracy theory setup by the United States of America. This has been an issue for decades, ever since the Tiananmen Square Protests in 1989...and it can't be ignored or belittled by anyone. It's a major problem that is very real.

What bugs me most about Mulan 2020 is that it exists largely as a reaction to the poor performance of Mulan 1998 in the Chinese market, and yet somehow ends up being more tone-deaf to Chinese cultural norms (the main complaint of Chinese audiences toward the original) than the original. Disney actually invested a *ton* of money back in the day to even get it screened in China and were hit quite hard by the poor reception, and once again we see a huge investment in the Chinese market in the remake, using Chinese actors, filming on location in China, getting a hardline CCP supporter to star, etc... though we of course also see a script written by 4 white people and no Chinese consultants able to explain everything these writers were doing wrong. For example, China hated Mushu. Sure he's a beloved character in the West, but Chinese audiences were quite annoyed to have mythical creatures showing up in an adaptation of a poem notably lacking in fantastical elements. So, they got rid of Mushu... and then added in a phoenix and a witch and qi powers and make the problem even worse than what they started with. 400 IQ move Disney, 400 IQ move. You can also see a token attempt to pay more lip service to the poem by increasing the emphasis on Mulan being in a cavalry unit (historians broadly agree that this was one of the bigger reasons Mulan was able to go undetected as well as she did; cavalry had more privacy than infantry and was a bit less dependent on upper body strength)... that was rendered basically inconsequential by turning it into a superhero movie. Like, I'm not even Chinese (I just like reading Chinese fantasy novels (which means I'm more familiar with ancient norms (which are very much viewed as outdated today) than modern ones... but those ancient and outdated norms that make it into pop fantasy novels (usually alongside more modern norms) are the norms modern audiences still remember and are familiar with)) and I haven't seen the movie (I'm honestly probably not going to bother)... but just by looking at trailer and review footage I can easily pick out half a dozen decisions (*unbound hair?* That's not just barbaric by 6th century standards, it's barbaric to the point of suggesting a rejection of humanity entirely (and importantly carries no gendered implication)) that I just know are going to backfire on Disney in the Chinese market specifically, not to mention all the more general issues that will apply basically equally to all markets.

@@filmfanman2647 it isn't actually all that progressive of a story and is far less progressive than the original animated Mulan. Because Mulan's abilities are due to magical powers instead of hardwork and determination like in the original it undercuts the message that "women can overcome adversity and save the world". They took a well designed "feminist heroine" and reduced her to a Mary Sue (a term I personally don't like as it is often misapplied but the shoe fits here). Also the film doesn't use the remake as an opportunity to critique the empire/barbarian dichotomy or the dangerous nationalist undertones of the narrative. A more "progressive" retelling would have been to humanize the "huns" by giving them more of a tragic backstory or showing how the Empire of China looked down upon barbarians. But considering how modern China views non-Han ethnic groups (like the Uyghurs) they continued to portray the outsiders like they were making a 1950's western about "dem Injuns". So it isnt "woke" or even "updated" retelling but a cheap cash grab for that lucrative Chinese Cinema market. The only thing slightly more progressive was that Mulan chose when to "out" herself as a woman rather than be "discovered" after her injury in the avalanche battle. I honestly feel like the 1998 Mulan is about as feminist as she needs to be (considering that it really triggered Mike Pence to go on a tirade on his talk show back in the day) but the movie really fails on its use of racial stereotypes and failure to critique Imperialist narratives. TL;DR New Mulan is actually less feminist than the original and still glorifies nationalist/Imperialist narratives as all of the changes weren't meant to be "woke" but to make more money in China.

I refuse to watch it. I refuse to give Disney money for these soulless factory movies. I refuse to watch a film filmed in Xinjiang with the help of Chinese authorities, and thanks them in it's credits. I refuse to support a shitty lead actress who supports the brutal oppression in Hong Kong. I think this might be a turning point for Hollywood. The only way they could have pandered more to the CCP would've been make the villains the Japanese. And even so it got banned from Chinese media. Combined with Western audiences boycotting the film due to it's Chinese connections and you have a hilariously bad flop. The China related backlash of course isn't the only reason for the box office bomb, the exclusive subscription to Disney+ and the ridiculous pay to view markup ontop of that is certainly another reason why audiences have shown little interest in the film. Audience fatigue towards the Disney remakes and their bad reputation is also playing a role. All in all it's very entertaining to watch Hollywood get bitch slapped like this.
