This dam had a lifespan of only 50yrs & currently it is over 126yrs.
As if the dam is situated in kerala, it is totally controlled by the Tamilnadu Government.
Adv.Russel Joy, a lawyer practising in the Kerala High Court,has raised the pitch for decommissioning this dam. He points out that in the eventuality of a dam burst, the Southern Naval Command, Naval Armament Depot ( NAD), Cochin Airport & Cochin Refinery will be washed away along with 5million people living in the downstream areas of the periyar.
Dam is located in a seismic zone & experts have raised fears about the likely impact of a quake with a magnitude higher than 6 on the ritcher scale on people living in the central kerala.
Mullaperiyar dam is a gravity dam.
After the 2018, devastating floods, the recurring incidents of flash floods, landslides & mudslipes occuring subsequently in Idukki district & neighbouring areas.
The scientists at the Centre for Earth Science Studies says an earthquake of a magnitude of 5 can lead to failure of the dam.
According to the report of IIT Roorkey, if there was a dam break upstream of a main river, the dams downstream would also break. Therefore the idukki dam will not be able to withstand if Mullaperiyar dam breaks& seven other dams in the downstream areas will also be destroyed.
The major concern is Mullaperiyar is the only dam from India, listed in the report of UN's Institute for water, environment & health, that need to be decommissioned immediately.
If this dam blasts it will vanish 6 districts, about 3/4th of the Kerala population.
