The Coolant tank has both a side and top inlet so it can be installed either in a short and wide application, or a tall and narrow installation. This allows 1 part to be more flexible with multiple vehicles and uses that have size restraints. Very common in a commercial type vehicle. It is left hand thread BECAUSE it has multiple caps. They do this just incase you go to standard loosen a cap, which tightens. This avoids accidental spills, and lets you know to look for a 2nd, or possibly 3rd tank cap.

True, and probably will last. But if its not your vehicle, and you are a professional shop, YOU MUST WARRANTY all repairs. Replacing the assembly is a warranty issue. Way less likely the truck will have a "Comeback" that will have to be repaired for free, and an upset customer. Especially since a new tank assembly is a generally low cost item with minimal labor. Labor is the biggest cost, even with expensive parts.
@valeriedunbar9227
@valeriedunbar9227 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Ray! The second cap on the side of the reservoir opens a bleeder if I recall correctly so that you can properly refill the reservoir. They are compartmented and the lower reservoir is to be refilled as well when servicing which entails plugging the overflow and filling the top tank up so that coolant goes through the 2nd passage by the cap down to the lower tank. After a while it stops taking coolant in that way, and as such specialized tools are needed to force more coolant down to fill it fully, although you can rig up a tool out of spare parts to do this. This comes from what I can remember in my time replacing block heaters under recall as a GM tech on these trucks, and in the notes it was as well mentioned to be critical that this lower tank be filled and to level. I would pull up the documents to double check, but as I am no longer a GM tech I don't have access to PBS anymore. Hope this helps!

@@richardwernst they're compartmentalized, I believe the lower section is the pressurized section of the tank and the upper section is just a reservoir. There needs to be appropriate coolant levels between the two of them for proper system function. It's similar to the older style reservoirs for the Duramaxs that are side by side, only real difference is that the newer style is one on top of the other instead.

@@peted5217 - If it were my own truck I’d simply have the dud sensor bypassed and make sure to visually check things every few days. I wouldn’t reward the designers/engineers/bean counters. GM uses Dexcool in all their engines, gasoline or diesel. It works in both and contrary to old school thinking, you don't need a "diesel specific" coolant that has silicates, nitrates or other now obsolete inhibitors. The universal extended life coolant (yellow) he used is chemically identical to Dexcool and perfectly fine to use here.

I will say that I drove a 6500 around the same year model as this and they’re kinda garbage. Coolant light comes pretty much every time you hit a bump (everything is a bump in a 6500), traction control was smoking meth and would trigger on dry pavement, changing the front pads/rotors made the ABS system never work properly again (not even the Chevy medium duty dealer could figure that one out) and overall the truck was just rough, gutless and I hated every waking moment of driving it. Give me back my 6.7 power stroke. I put 3x the miles on that thing and beat the hell out of it every step of the way. Never had so much as a CEL come on

The engine itself probably is. It’s the 4,674 different sensors, coolers, heaters, valves, pumps, solenoids, etc. that make the problems. Diesel fuel is harsh for the environment when burned. It has to be at the right temperature, viscosity, and then needs to be catalyzed for it to score low emissions. These trucks also make twice the power and torque than they did 20 years ago. I bet if you put a 25 year old fuel and exhaust system on one of these new motors, they’d never break. They’d make 1/2 the power and blow smoke, but they’d be damn near bulletproof. Emissions are why the 7.3 died. It was cheaper for Navistar to engineer a new engine than keep throwing crap on the old one to meet the new standards. Plus, all the new redesigns have made these things vastly quieter.

Look at what Joe Biden/large government has done to energy prices in the U.S. IT's shameful, it should be. Modern coal fired power plants put almost zero emissions into the air. Their stacks emit water vapor and a small bit of carbon dioxide, or plant air as I like to call it.
