This video talks about all of the routing and general settings to get multitrack audio from your console into your Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). I use Presonus StudioOne Pro, but you could choose from any major DAW and make this work. Once you build your live stream mix in the DAW you can then route the audio back into your console and then out to your video switcher or live streaming device.

Can you recommend a DAW for windows doing church live stream? Beginner friendly.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 ай бұрын
I always gravitate towards Presonus Studio One as it has been the most user friendly in my experience. You have to buy the Artist version to be able to multitrack record and you can use their native plugins as well. This runs you about $150 and is super solid. If you want to use third party pliugins like Waves, UAD, etc you would need the Pro version which is like $250. Ableton is another one that many people use. I didn't particularly like that one as it is more geared towards people creating music and tracks. Reaper is another inexpensive DAW that people use as it runs $80 (I believe) and is fully functional. It was originally an open source platform so there is a lot of support for it and many videos around as well. Finally, Logic Pro is another paid DAW that many people use, but that is Mac based.

I am just trying to monitor my tracks as I overdub to record track by track. There are many videos that show how to record and then how to play back and mix but not how to record whilst hearing a previously recorded track and that is what I do - until mixdown. Hey Dave - Great video! This has been very helpful getting our new setup working at my church. Quick question. We are running a M32 at FOH with a Waves soundgrid card. All 32 channels are going to a separate room over the Waves network to our Mac running Logic. Then we are sending the stereo mix back out to the console like in your video to get the mix to our Atem Mini at FOH for the stream audio. My question is, how do we monitor the daw in the separate room? We want to be able to have studio monitors and headphones. Would we need to add a 2nd audio interface for monitoring in the room? Thanks!
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Жыл бұрын
You should be able to monitor Logic from the Mac through the regular headphone outs. The analog out should be an option along with your digital output. There are other programs (I believe called Soundflower, but don’t quote me on that) that allow you to send the same signal to multiple places on a Mac… similar to the ASIO sound card on a Windows machine.

!!Thanks for this video!! Do you apply some delay compensation for the latency caused by plugins?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
In theory, you are just building a mix in the DAW so you would want to have something in place to match you plugin timing. With that in mind, you are not sending these signals back to the console to go to your FOH (Front of House) mix as those would be rather latent compared to your stage in most circumstances. Most people are using this setup to be able to mix their FOH on the console, and then send the raw audio tracks to a DAW, mix their stream audio, and then send it back to their console to route out to their streaming device. I hope this helps clarify the setup.

Hello Allam, Thanks for your awesome work. I will like to ask you a question. I use Allen & Heath QU32. I sent all 32 channels over USB to my DAW and sent back the processed mix over the same USB to channels 31 and 32. These channels were routed to my video switcher on mix 7-8. The problem is that my mix 7-8 is also sending the unprocessed sound from all inputs instead of just sending 31 and 32 coming from the DAW. So I have a combination of processed and unprocessed sound coming from 7-8. How can I exclude channels 1 to 30 from mix 7-8? Thanks.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
I am not sure of the QU32 specifically, but on the X32 I have the ability to turn off (mute) channels from the MixBUSes. There should be some sort of a “flip faders” or “sends on faders” where you can make these adjustments.

In the Windows ecosystem you can do this with the ASIO drivers, but Mac doesn’t usually play as easy. I believe there are some programs you can install to allow you to map the internal audio to different places, but I’m not sure of what they are exactly. I think I have head people talk about Q-labs and maybe a program called Soundflower, but ai could be wrong about these. Good luck with the search.

Hi Dave, thank you for all you do for us! This could be straight forward for others but could you please do a video to show how one can directly go from the DAW into the streaming pc or switcher (preferably though a usb, if that is possible) without having to send the sound from the DAW back into the console?. We have a different pc running the streaming software and another pc with studio one that we intend to use for our online sound mix/processing. Any insight you share would be highly appreciated! Thank you.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
This is actually the typical path (console -> DAW -> console -> switcher) since most audio cards on computers (DAWs) do not allow to route to different outputs. If you are on a MAC you can use a program called Qlabs that will allow you to do various output routings internally, but on the native cards it becomes more complicated that I can figure out. Some people might try the basics of using the headphone out from one computer and run to the mic in on another computer, but this will most likely add a ground loop (or buzz) and will take your nice stereo mix and make it mono. I wish I had a quick answer for you to make this work, but the only other ‘easy’ solution is to go out your headphones jack, into a 2 channel interface (Presonus, focusrite, etc) which converts to USB and push that into your second computer.

Very helpful! How do you recommend monitoring the DAW mix before it's sent to the X32? For example...we send signal from the X32 to our DAW. Is there a way to monitor the sound on the computer? Unfortunately we have the DAW in the same room as our live sound. So we would need to use headphones. Could you technically monitor the DAW from AUX 1-2 on the X32? Or would there be a way to actually mix AND monitor the DAW from the X32 using the RECORD/PLAY feature?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
You have a few options. Since you are mixing in the DAW, you could use the monitoring feature and have headphone attached to the computer to have a listen. The second option (as you mentioned) is to solo the mix that comes into the board (Aux 1/2) assuming you are within distance to the board. Another option is to solo this where the signal meets a video switcher or streaming device. This would be the last part in the chain before it goes to the world, but might not be feasible based on location of devices in your facility. I tend to do it at the board since this is a happy medium of signal path and (most likely) physical location.

@@AllamHouse Thank you. So a couple observations. I’m not sure I can monitor pro tools on the Mac. I can’t find a way to do it. My playback is set to “X-USB”. When I feed the DAW mix back into the X-32 via Aux 1 and 2 I get bad feedback unless faders are down. Keep in mind I’m doing all this while simultaneously using the X-32 for live Sunday service. I need a way to monitor the DAW mix without interfering with that. Monitoring from the Mac would be ideal but I just can’t figure out a way to do it. Any thoughts would be welcome. Thank you!
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 2 жыл бұрын
My Thoughts: 1) I took a quick look at ProTools and it seems there is an "input monitor" button on each input fader next to the "record enabled" button. This would allow you to hear the tracks through headphones while recording. That is assuming it works the same way StudioOne and Ableton function. If that is not the case, then we move on. 2) The feedback you are getting leads me to believe you either have the AUX 1/2 still set to go to your Main L/R Bus... or you have it creating a loop with itself and sending into the DAW. This would just take some looking through the board and DAW to confirm features are checked/unchecked appropriately. 3) If you are using a video switcher before sending audio into your stream you can usually monitor there as well if needed.

Thanks for the video. This got me thinking: We have an x32 and a s16. Can I send my inputs to the daw via usb, then in the daw create sub mixes for IEM, send them back to X32 via usb and assign them to outputs on the back of the s16 for example. Was thinking of this so that we could have separate EQ for FOH and live/IEM mixes.. Will this setup work or will I encounter latency/delay issues in the IEMs ?

Hey Allamhouse. Great video!!! I have a question, below is my configuration and was wondering if the routing would be the same. We are running 2 mixers our Wing is FOH and our X32 is for our livestream. I keep getting stuck. Thanks for your input. Routing: Wing >AES50 B > Behringer X32 > X-USB > Studio One > Back to X32 > trying to use main outs going to ATEM Television Studio HD
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, this would work fine. Your overall gain will be set by the Wing and you will need to set the clock source to whichever AES50 port you have the Cat5 plugged into on the X32 so it will sync properly. After that it is a stand alone console so you can route into StudioOne, mix, route back to the X32 and then into the ATEM. Make sure you de-select all of your inputs from the main LR bus on the X32 so they do not go to your stream. The only thing that should go to your main LR bus is the signal returning from StudioOne.

Hey this may be a dumb question but I want to know if there is a reason why you would route it back to the mixer to map out to the switcher instead of sending the audio to the switcher straight out of the computer hosting the DAW? I’m in a situation where I may need to use this method but wanted to see why this method instead of going from X32 to Computer/DAW to switcher.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Жыл бұрын
That is a great question and here is the reason I did it this way. Many organizations are similar to my church in that they are using a mix from the console (Matrix, MixBUS, etc) for their stream. They have cabling in place and everything works. This video discusses a method to transition their stream mix from the console to a DAW, but not disrupt anything and not require any new gear. In most cases, if you want to go right from the DAW to a switcher or streaming machine you will need some sort of an interface or jump to a Dante network, but again this video is designed to just add the DAW. I hope that helps.
@MajorMeowmers
@MajorMeowmers Жыл бұрын
@@AllamHouse that makes sense but do you think there is any audio degradation going with one over the other? I can see why using an XLR out of the board would be a clean and grounded signal but I wonder if routing from the DAW computer to the switcher would cause some digital distortion.
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse Жыл бұрын
There should not be any degradation. If you choose to not go through the board and use an interface you will need to set the gain on the interface properly and this does pose a potential risk of those gains being changed by accident. Also, just check that you do not get any ground loop noise between the different devices.

@@AllamHouse The question and topic here is similar to mine: Why choose this method versus using a mix out to create and fine-tune (using effects, limiter, etc) the livestream mix (as in another video you've produced)? I like the audio-to-DAW-and-back method, as it gives another operator the full capability to fine-tune the livestream mix. Are there any other advantages to this method that I can use to help persuade our sound team to think about the DAW method? thanks - great videos.

@@jameyclapp1822 Thanks for the encouragement. As previously mentioned, my church uses the Post-Fader AUX Mix setup that I discuss in one of my other videos and it works for us because we only have one sound tech per Sunday. The mix with one sound tech will NEVER be as good as the mix with two. Having a second sound tech is always a better scenario. The easiest way to facilitate that is to build a pre-fader AUX Mix on your board (assuming it is digital) and hand that second person an iPad to allow them to mix for the stream. This limits you to the capabilities of the board which is where the DAW comes into play. The DAW allows you to set custom plugins for each input, add saturation and lush effects and build/manage a well refined mix... live. This really is the ideal way to go and how many of the top-streamed churches are doing it. Also, the cost (outside of the second sound tech's time) is not that expensive. You can grab a DAW for $150 and use their stock plugins and have something really nice. I hope this helps.

Great reading all the comments. I have my X32 out via USB to a MAC laptop running logic pro. We then take the output of the MAC via the 3.5mm into a converter to get it XLR. From there it goes XLR to a 2I2 Scarlett, back out USB to our OBS computer. Definitely not efficient and there has to be a better way. I am looking to see if I can maybe run a DAW and OBS in the same PC. Its Windows with an AMD 5600X CPU AND 3070 graphics. I want to see if I can eliminate the MAC since its very old and sometimes it causes audio issues. Hoping not to have to resort to a dedicated DAW and dedicated video/stream switcher. But I believe some of the comments question whether OBS can see the DAW outputs if they reside on the same PC.

No, this video that you commented on is a full walk through of exactly how to route your console and interact across one USB cable from the console to the DAW. Here is the premise… many people are using a setup where the console mixes their house AND their stream (like my church). We have routing in place to send our stream from our console into our video switcher. If we wanted to change and mix our stream in a DAW we would use this technique and routing to get the inputs to go into the DAW (across USB), mix the stream audio in the DAW and then send the final mix (back across USB) through the console and into our video switcher. Nothing in this equation requires Dante.

If you have the Behringer X32 you will need to upgrade to the X-Live card which allows for multitrack recording directly to SD cards. If you have the Midas M32 it will come with this card already installed. Outside of those options, you will need to use a DAW to record. If you are just going for a basic record and playback, you might look at Trackslive which is a free download from Waves and it is a very basic DAW that would be a direct replacement for the SD card concept if you need this soon.

Outputs are typically mixes that have been built with inputs. This could be a a main mix, MixBUS, Matrix, etc. if you select a direct out, that is taking the channel inout and sending it directly out whatever output you are using. This would act like a direct pass through the console.

So this would replace the BUS to Matrix setup you made a video about because that one is just for one sound tech right? I’m trying to setup our X32 to studio one on a pc that someone in the back of the church can remote into and mix the daw live for our stream. I like the bus/matrix setup but our sound tech doesn’t quite understand anything past moving faders up and down. They literally setup a monk matrix channel untouched straight to our fb stream and it sounds horrible for over a year now. I had to step in. I’m just a singer and drummer but I’ve run sound in the past. I went through this video and got everything setup. Thanks!
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use a Matrix or a MixBUS to build a mix completely in the console and send that out to your livestream... this is where most people begin. If you have the luxury of a second sound tech then you can move to a DAW which allows greater flexibility and customization in the mix. Using this video shows the routing needed (and DAW routing) to make this happen. Most people still route their audio from the DAW back to the console and out to the same bus (and outputs) that were being used in the old setup so nothing changes on that side. Once this is working a lot of people step from USB transmission to using DANTE which offers a lot more flexibility in how you get signals to/from the console and streaming device, it has an increased cost as well.

The issue I’m having now is no one knows about what has been routed on our board. I learned today they hired a guy to setup the board and it cost them $1500. All of the outputs are set to local channels and Aux 1&2 are used for a mono matrix feed into the switcher to our live stream. Outputs 24-32etc say P16. Which I presume are the 3 P16s we use on stage. The guy is going to charge us money again just to tell us what he routed on the board. I got everything to work with this video but I changed the outputs 9-end to our AES50A that is coming into the board from the preamp, Ethernet and snake. This morning I tried just changing the card routing but it wouldn’t record on studio one. The 32 inputs showed up but wouldn’t receive the signals like I had it on the separate scene I saved last night. Any words of wisdom from the X32 master?
@AllamHouse
@AllamHouse 3 жыл бұрын
I’m sorry to hear that they paid money and were not educated. This is a big reason why I started this channel and why I don’t just ‘give out’ my scene. You have to build it to... for your needs... so you know what it is doing and how to troubleshoot. (End of rant) Now that you have your inputs set properly, you will need to mirror those to be sent out USB on the Routing > Card screen. This will allow the signals to be picked up from the correct preamp and then sent across USB to the DAW.

The USB card offers 32 channels of throughput (both out to a destination and back in). If you want to record AUX channels coming into your console those will take up some of the 32 channels. That is the short answer. The longer answer gets into deciding what exactly you need to record at the same time and then how to use the other routing options to get the most use out of the console. In theory this will confirm it is being sent out the proper USB slots when going back to the console. 3) Confirming the Routing > User > Input 25-32 is set properly for receiving normal inputs from everything and then USB 1/2 are routed to In31 and In32. 4) If it still isn't working, I would revert to having a basic stereo signal in a new Ableton session and just get the output to work... then add the needed inputs

I only want to effect the live stream. Any idea what I was missing? Thanks

Sorry for the delayed response, this got buried in my YT comment section. My guess is you have the ProTools mix coming back into the console and whatever channels it is returning into (AUX is what I use in the video) still has the "Stereo LR Bus" lit up orange which is sending your DAW mix to your FOH. Select the channel(s) the DAW returns in and de-select the button that is just to the left of the screen on the console so it will NOT go to your main mix,

This mix isn’t to be used for the FOH mix, but for your live stream instead. You can then delay the audio in the console (at the bus level) or in most streaming platforms to align the video and audio. This solution is an easy way to introduce DAW mixing for the live stream while keeping any existing connections from the console to the streaming device.

I’m trying to understand what exactly you are trying to accomplish. If you need to send your Main mix out of your AUX outputs on the back of the console you can go to Routing > AUX and set your desired source that will go out the desired AUX plug. This does require hooking a physical cable to the physical output on the back of the console. The X-USB card can only carry 32 I/O so if you are recording 32 tracks already you will not have availability to push more across to your DAW. The general USB Card output will be raw audio. The signal will hit the preamp and then exit to your DAW. I have run across USB up to 25 feet with no issues, but past that you will want to use DANTE. Once you have the software on your computer you can just set your DAW inputs from DANTE and the signal will flow properly. I’m not exactly sure what you are getting at with these questions. The only other board I have is an old Presonus 16.4.2 that runs firewire. I still use it to track drums sometimes, but I would have to play around with it to see if I could make it work. The overall concept would be the same though, send all tracks out to the DAW, build your mix in the DAW and send it back to the console. The challenge will be making sure you can designate where your signal goes when it comes back into the console. I've thought about picking up a QU recently just to learn it and make some videos about it since it has a wide user base. I believe the Presonus AI allows you to map specific I/O according to USB and build a custom setup. I know it works on their 32r (rack mountable) console.

What DAW are you using? Make sure you have sound coming into a mix bus (or main bus) in your DAW. You have to build/route this bus to a specific stereo output in the DAW that you send across USB back to the console. Then on the console there needs to be some routing for those inputs to go to a specific set of faders (inputs) that then can be used like normal. I'll mess around with my old Presonus board and see if I can figure it out. I would avoid sending the DAW audio out the headphone jack and back into the console like you might for standard audio playback as this will most likely cause some audio hum or ground noise.

This seems like you have a different setting checked somewhere as this is not the typical scenario by default. I would begin by looking in the Monitoring section of the console (if you're on the full console it is just to the right of the screen... hit the view button in the corner). Go to Talkback A and deselect it from all MixBUSes. Do the same for Talkback B. Now, check and see if you still have the same issue. My guess is you have the Talkback mix set to go into a MixBUS being used for your live stream. Once you have identified the problem, you can re-engage the Talkback into a MixBUS one at a time. If the issue comes back during the process then you identified the problem and can make adjustments to fix it going forward.

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. The video that this comment is posted on discusses using your digital console like an audio interface and sending all tracks to your DAW to build a mix inside the DAW. Then route the DAW output back to the console to send to tour streaming device. If that is what you want to accomplish it will not work with your Yamaha console. However, if you just want to build a live stream mix on the Yamaha and then send it into a computer for live stream ... and you only need to send a stereo signal out of the Yamaha, then you can use an interface to convert the signal to USB and into tour computer.
