It's black sweet rice. Check out the photo in the ingredient section on my website, please. When you make rice, just add 1 spoon black rice, then the rice will turn out beautiful purple color when cooked.

You always amaze me. Maangchi, I luv Korean, Thai and believe you me, did not know James Strange watches you recipes too as well as Dave and a few others. I am particularly careful now on watching others recipe make comments which are not ( I think!) negative criticisms but I was responded with disrespect. i think nuoc mam is fish sauce that is diluted and seasoned. my mom always diluted fish sauce with water and added garlic, lemon, chili peppers, and a small amount of sugar. i'm not sure about the crab thing, but three crabs is her favorite brand :)

hello maangchi, with your cookbook coming out etc it would be great if you found a source for all your dried ingredients. when i was in houston i could get and find anything, products from all over the world. i am in albuquerque new mexico and it is hard to find a lot of items. i mail order tons. the few asian markets here interestingly enough do not carry a lot of the things you use.
