I’ll leave my dad’s recipe for y’all! You can buy them already cut, so just cook them with half an onion 3 garlic cloves a hand full of cilantro With stems and 1 tbs of salt until they are no longer bright green! Drain, you can rinse but they will still be slimy no matter what (Please don’t rinse). Chop in cubes an onion, tomato plus cilantro put them in a deep dish add your cooked nopales and salt to taste! You are basically making a salad! Enjoy them with a warm tortilla, tortilla chips or as a side to any grilled meat/seafood, add a chopped Serrano pepper for some heat!

I have been wanting to try nopales for years, since reading about their use in skincare and in Mexican cuisine and vegetarian and vegan dishes for the growing number of people with those diets in Mexico. I really hope that some make their way here to upstate New York. These cultures brought us chilies and chocolate and tomatoes and so many other things I can't recollect. Thanks to these agricultural workers and their preservation of these cuisines and ingredients.

I purchased 2 pads, planted and them in sand , 2 gallon pot, kept about1-2 inches of water in a pan the pot were in, 1 month later they were well rooted, I eat myself to the max, give lots away, still in the dormant time I take a machete and cut it way back, every year, and it just grows and grows, nice flowers, fruit makes great juice, it is a amazing decoration, edible heathy and real tasty. Just blessed to have them grow so easily here in Arizona. As a 12 year old my Dad and Brother traveled Mexico, on evening somewhere around Oaxaca we pulled our Datsun PU into the desert, Dad went out with his pocket knife, came back with some cactus pads, cleaned them up, spines, etc., we watched, he took a bite of bread, cactus, we watched his reaction first before it was our turn, nothing great nothing negative, just the look on his face, he was trying to figure it out, taste, good, bad, so so, then all we saw was him spitting it out, washing his mouth out, now the rest of the story, for several hrs we were pulling prickles out with a tweezer, it was something else, He got something besides a Nopal variety, the next morning we investigated, whatever it was the interior of the pad was loaded with prickles, it was like a sandwich spread of tiny tiny prickle, never will forget that nite, Dad was up all nite, for several days, he'd have us dig another one out. Was funny, but not for him. The reason I saw funny, my Bro and I had a vacation in hell, as we had a jerk Dad, so we chuckled, payback dude, seriously this is a true to life story. I think of it often when I see my 2 cactus plants, have a tasty thornless treat, and a payback chuckle.

@@theuberman7170 Mexico has a real colorist and classist problem. My dad's side is well off and will eat anything as long as there is a good time accompanying the meal. On the other hand, I've met people WAY below my income level who scoff at beans, nopales, and basic traditional foods because they are poor people foods. To me, it's insane that people will go mostly hungry to afford some meat so they can feel like they eat better than their neighbors.

@@RegstarRogstar smooth and firm on the outside like a cucumber, but a plain jelly center. They are more texture than flavor. We used to have this plant at home. It's so easy to reproduce, you can simply take one of those growing oval segments apart, place it in the ground and it will grow roots, just like that. Another plant. Rinse and repeat and you can have a whole forest of these guys. If someone dedicated to that, you could turn an arid desert area into a green nopal forest. It's a good way to stop desertification, and at the same time temperatures will go down because the plant will take all the heat that otherwise would be stored in the ground. It can help retaining humidity by providing shadow to the ground, because some varieties grow like bushes and lots of wildlife will find refuge and feed on it. I wish someone could try to do it, not like a plantation but as a real way to bring life to the desert.
@PRDreams3 жыл бұрын
Seriously. If you had never tasted it, try it. I tasted it last year and loved it so much, I'm growing my own nopales now. The best way I can describe the taste: fresh green beans with a touch of lime and salt. You have to add salt after cutting them and let them rest to remove the water, which has a big of a slime texture. Think okra. Once the first water is removed, rinse it and use as you would use green beans. You can also grill it if you don't want to add salt. The water will cook down, but the crunch will lessen. Easy to grow, delicious and healthy. You can grow it in a pot indoors. It's that easy

They are so versatile !! you can grill them, make a salad, do a "stuffed nopal" ( with cheese n meat of your choice, cook in salsa with meat, add to a smoothie ( goes great with pineapple😍😍) With eggs, the list goes on..... and its so good for you !! And the prickly fruit, tunas!!! I'm surprised that wasnt Dessert after!
