This is so disappointing, honestly. PetSmart seems to constantly fall in the "this looks close enough to what I need, so I'll buy it" category with its consumers. Now there's a shift in the market so they've slightly changed designs but still manage to ignore the fundamental issues in their products when it would be so easy to make them livable for small animals.

Btw lemme say that 12 inch wheel is not safe for chinchilla’s. They need a 15 inch wheel or larger and cannot have plastic in their cages. It looks perfect for hedgehogs with how wide it is and how large in diameter.
@Boredchinchilla3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think there are any wheels out there that work really well for chinchillas tbh.
Came here to say this. My Chinchillas have a 16 inch wooden wheel. Hedgehogs though would do well with this size, I like bucket wheels better though for cleaning

I have had the new 12 inch wheel for several months now. It’s silent, durable and sturdy! It sits a little higher, so the bedding doesn’t get stuck in it. It is SO easy to clean as well! I used to have a NiteAngel I believe, and it was so difficult taking off the back with the circle system with the pins and beads. The bottom didn’t seem the sturdiest as well.

When i started working at petsmart one of the first things I did was replace all the small wheels in the cages. All of the dwarf hamsters have 6.5 in wheels now and all of the baby syrians have 8 Inches. I know 8 in isn't ideal for adults but it was the biggest wheels that would fit in the enclosures 😩 Over my time working there all the small wheels have "mysteriously disappeared" into the trash

Can PetSmart remove the chinchilla off the 12" wheel marketing altogether? Plastic is a big no no and 15" is the minimum diameter for them. And lets get real on all the other wheels...get rid of anything under 8"...come one. It is so frustrating that the small animal community has to fight so hard to try and find decent products more readily available.

It depends if it is smooth. If you see that the animal can’t push the wheel or have difficulty with it i recommend using a wheel that turns smoothly. Or in some cases it’s okay to size down (if it’s still big enough for the animal ofcourse) I myself use wooden wheels with cork inside. But you have to be careful with them because sometimes they don’t turn as they should be. Always test a wheel before you purchase. Sorry for my bad English btw😅

@ldegraaf3 жыл бұрын
I know this was addressed to Munchie but in case she doesn't answer I thought I would let you know the biggest risk with them. They seem to work if your hamster can stop it safely every single time, however there have been some serious injuries when hamsters either forget that they can't just stop out of no where or for whatever reason can't continue running. So, I just wouldn't risk it.
@MunchiesPlace3 жыл бұрын
We are retiring ours. We only would use the 11 or 14 inch exotic saucer if we had it, as we only have the cheap 12" ones from Petco. We find classic wheels to be better. 12" was helpful when we didn't have the height space for a larger Syrian wheel.

I grabbed the last one they had in the store, but the label with the picture of the chinchilla had been removed on that one, so I had no idea they were even marketing it as a chinchilla product. Assumed it was just meant as a large hamster wheel. Yeah, this is NOT good for chinchillas. At all. Fantastic for Syrians though! @MunchiesPlace3 жыл бұрын
Chinchillas use wheels for exercise. The wheel sizes for them range from 12+ inches, However minimum I've come to research should be 14inches instead of 12. Metal wheels are what's ideal, so they don't chew up the plastic.
@emslilzoo29063 жыл бұрын
Chinchillas can use wheels, some people recommend it, some people don't. But like Munchie said they should only have 14+ inch wheels OR saucers that are metal only. Plastic as a whole is unsafe for chinchillas. So it's certainly falsely advertised but much better than the small plastic saucers they use.
