A Rivian R1T electric pickup truck apparently caught fire while parked next to an Electrify America charging station in Mill Valley, California, with the Southern Marin Fire Department responding. Both Rivian and Electrify America are investigating the incident, but images appear to show the fire was contained to the front of the truck, where the charge port is located.

Could be because Sandy called out Tesla defects and bad design a few years back and knew what he was talking about. Its all the more amazing the Tesla made the updates and now Sandy is super impressed. I am hopeful more care companies make it, Rivian seems like a great car company, I also like Arrival but they are a completely different production model and who knows if it will ultimately work out or not. @@RogerM88 Tesla is the only one actually shaking up the market with EV's. He's impressed with their crazy engineering feats, so I can see why, from an engineer's perspective, he leans into Tesla-praising, especially after they incorporated many concerns that he and his team raised. He's tired of the old market, Tesla is his current relief from old auto-trends. He'll be perfectly happy to praise every company who comes along and delivers a good product at the end of the day, even with issues that need to be resolved. For me, as much as I admire Tesla for what they've done, I'd never buy one as they are currently. Their support chain and parts supply are both severely hampered for post-purchase fixes, I really don't like how few buttons there are in the vehicle; burying things in menus unnecessarily, and their paint issues need addressing asap. I'd much rather have a Rivian based on looks and function alone, but even they will be a long time coming before they scale up appropriately enough and have that customer support chain in place to ensure that nobody who buys their $70K+ vehicle has too many headaches, because they will most certainly come up.

Seems us Tesla fans often are made to be seen as anti anyone else. This is not true (there maybe some but I don't know any) we are first and foremost EV fans and for me it's been a better world for my son to grow up in Fan. It's just Tesla has been the leading light in this area. But any company that brings out a decent EV, I'm a fan of. I will be critical of any company Tesla included if they aren't doing the right thing or any other problem. So good on Rivian bringing out a very nice EV and we need to see more been built. Would love to invest in them but valuation still to high.

I wish them the best. It's really a good design and there are things that others will definitely copy. However, they will have it tougher than Tesla. Tesla didn't have to compete with anyone for 8 years. Rivian will have the Ford Lightening, Cybertruck, Silverado, and Hummer to compete with. On the plus side, because of Tesla's valuation, the other EV companies are getting high valuations too and it is easier for Rivian to raise cash.

BUT I HONESTLY HAVE TO SAY, THAT AFTER SEEING HIM SHOW YOU HIS TRUCK, I GUES I'VE GOT TO HAVE A LOT OF RESPECT FOR THIS MAN, ESPECIALLY SINCE HIS COMPANY IS BRAND NEW, AND STARTING WITH A VEHICLE IN THE MOST COMPETITIVE HIGHEST VOLUME, HIGHEST PROFIT MAKING, AND FIERCE OWNER LOYALTY SEGMENT IN AMERICA!! I KNOW HE'S BEEN IN DEVELOPMENT FOR LIKE 12 YEARS, BUT IT REALLY SHOWS!! I CAN'T BELIEVE HOW MANY NEW, INNOVATIVE, CLEVER, USER FRIENDLY FEATURES THIS TRUCK HAS!! MOST OWNERS OF "BIG 3" AMERICAN PICKUPS WILL LOOK AT THIS, AND SAY : HOW COME MY TRUCK DOESN'T HAVE SOME OF THOSE THINGS?? AND I PAID JUST AS MUCH FOR LESS!! ALL THAT POWER, GREAT RIDE ON OR OFF ROAD, AND A BEAUTIFUL INTERIOR TOO!! THIS IS WHAT A LINCOLN BLACKWOOD PICKUP WOULD BE LIKE TODAY!! THE BIGGEST DISLIKE FOR ME, IS THAT IT HAS THE WORLDS HIGHEST LIFTOVER HEIGHT FOR THE FRUNK!! (nice big, roomie frunk, though; and it's got SANDY'S BELOVED DRAIN PLUG!! ). IT REALLY LOOKS LIKE R.J. AND HIS TEAM HAVE GOT A BIG, BIG WINNER HERE!! THANKS SANDY ( and, was Cory holding the camera?? Thank You Too!! ). CHAS ORVIS, PLAINVILLE, CT. PS : SANDY, MAYBE YOU DON'T EVEN CARE ABOUT THIS THAT MUCH, BUT I'D ALSO LIKE TO SEE YOU AND R.J. CHECKING OUT HIS AMAZON DELIVERY VAN, TOO!!!

Couple of favorite moments; when asked what he thought (several times) Sandy says "it's pretty good". Then when RJ was asked about Monroe getting the R1T, RJ say's "depends what you are going to do with it". No revealing tear downs thank you very much. I liked the Rt1 more than I thought I would. If it weren't for the lack of service locations and a useable charging infrastructure, I'd likely get one. RJ, You have to make the 110/120 volt plugs 20 amp, NOT 15 amp plugs PLUS you should have a 10-30 amp RV plug for boondocking. A nema 14-50 plug 220 volt 50 plug would also be great. This would allow vehicle to Load and or Vehicle to Grid by a low cost service breaker- generator switch.

Did a google on petulant and musk, found articles addressing him that way, dating back to the SEC probe and tweets about taking it private. Because he has a dislike for short sellers and played them, a breed who contribute nothing to the world other than making bets on companies to create more wealth disparity and line their own pockets. I see a guy who works relentlessly and understands his business from the frontline, who dreams of making big leaps in leaving the world on a better path without oil, non renewal energy and being confined to earth. Dont understand why people brand Musk as some villain, or dont have the capacity to make an informed opinion rather than read headlines that try to paint a particular agenda.

Sandy is a legend, don't retire keep sharing! Keep working, sure work less, hopefully you will have a rewarding time. Keep your mind and body sharp, stay off the carbs, and maybe you'll keep up with your Phd wife! However I do think Sandy illustrates a practice of learning beyond qualifications and certifcates. Regarding the Rivian, the Electro/hydraulic systems sound good but they are massively expensive to repair. Even the electro adjsutable dampers on current vehicles are $750 a corner, I know as I just had two completed today, next day availability and completion. Whilst I love the technology the long term maintenance is an issue. Quality manufactuers rely on their long-term reputation too, OEM parts prompt availability, affordability. That structure is important, once you buy into a brand/vehicle a lot of time is invested. I drive on a mixture of unclassified roads, local roads, and some motorways, some 500 mile journeys, drive in all weathers, in the dark rainy nights, snow. Functionality is key. I need a vehicle that operates at a high level, consistently, comfortably, without unnecessary complexity, I hope Rivian can deliver that and more. Whilst Rivian is good, I still think Tesla is years ahead.

Great insights, thank you once again! I can definitely confirm the supply issues for plastics, was a huge problem especially a year ago when the Du Pont plant in Texas was closed because of the snow storm, supply for Nylon has been short ever since then and is getting better only slowly. Another reason may be that a lot of plastic is needed for the Covid quick tests.

Interesting idea. I envisage a company looking for a point of difference doing that, especially if it's possible concerning regs to have the front fold down like a tailgate so it's more practical to get to and pull out. It might have to sit low so that it's not a hazard in a head-on collision - could even make it a no go. Should've got an engineering degree to know... Modern tyres really are that good these days that spare considerations to me are not a biggie - different if you're going off road obviously, so there's that. There's my two cents worth - you may choose to round down on this one

BTW: You do not want a charger time less than 20 minutes becuase if so, you will have to stay at the car 10 minutes (like a gas tank filling that is 5 minutes) until it is done so you can move it out of the charging place. 10 minutes is not enough time to take a rest, food and restroom.
@ymcpa73
@ymcpa73 2 жыл бұрын
DO you actually have an EV? When you hear people talking about 10 min or 20 min of charge, they are referring either to the time needed to get from 20% to 80% or the time to get to 200+ miles of range. Charging slows down a great deal once you get close to 80%. It takes over an hour to get a full charge. So, if you need rest, food, or a restroom, you can do that. You don't need to stand next to the car as you do with a gas station. You plug it in, do what you need to do, and once you have enough range to get to the next charger, you leave. If you are eating, you can keep adding more range until you are finished.
