I think the first major sign that Basil's planning to commit suicide in the real world is him giving the photo album to Sunny *before* learning that he's moving away. Suddenly giving away cherished posessions to loved ones for no apparent reason is a major warning sign of suicide.

Also important to note that basil was 12 years old and knew how to tie a noose and even came up with the idea to stage maris suicide. That’s not something mentally healthy kids think about or know how to do!

thanks for saying this ! i think a lot of people miss the implications because it happens before the game shows that basil didn't know about sunny moving, but he even goes on to say that he was "glad to meet sunny again, *even if it was only for a little while.*", very loaded wording. i honestly think basil deducted sunny would most likely not have broken out of his repression before basil would die to suicide and gave it to him as a last ditch effort as a lasting reminder since he wouldn't be in sunny's life anymore, considering sunny ruining the photos the first time was what notified basil of how far gone he was in the first place.

2:03:23 If you re-enter the piano room after Hero tells you to go back to sleep, you'll find him sitting at the piano and sobbing. It's one of my favorite scenes in the game because it's entirely skippable, but if you're like me, his insistence that you leave makes you more curious to go back into the room, and when you do, what you find is something very human. Hero, for the first time we've seen, lets down his guard, and shows that despite being the sturdy person holding the group together, he's also still deeply affected by Mari's death, and may have actually wanted to come to your house to mourn privately.
@qwerty3793
@qwerty3793 2 жыл бұрын
Oh absolutely - I thought it was one of the most powerful moments in the game. We don't get a whole lot of information on Hero's life after the incident, but between his reaction to going to the graveyard on the second day (where he simply states he isn't ready, later confirming he's never gone to visit) and Kel's description of Hero's depression after Mari's death, you get the idea that Hero hasn't really allowed himself to mourn the way he needs to. So when we take him so close to where she died and he hears the piano music she was known for and sits at the piano she used to play, it's finally too much and he just sobs. It's a very real moment that made Mari's death seem that much more heartbreaking.

In my opinion, the reason Headspace feels so.. lengthed out and padded is because its not meant to be a quick area. Omori is trying to force you to focus on this happy-go-lucky place and is like, trying to extend it more so you can't figure out the truth.

You missed something *very* important at 1:55:00. The ringing phone room. If you DON'T grab the key, and go over to the Phone where the hands spawn once you grab the key, you're able to pick up the phone. Doing so, yields _one of _*_the_*_ most important lines in the entire game_ that almost everybody misses: MOM: "SUNNY ... we're moving away." Why is this so important? Think about it. This entire room in black space is dedicated to this one line. It must be extremely important, right? And the STRANGER in this room says: "For so long, you kept the truth shut out, but something made it slip and the hole that it made won't stop growing until you've found the root of it all." What made it slip? Well, the answer is found in the room: MOM: "SUNNY ... we're moving away." Think about it! This is a cycle that has repeated over and over and over and over and over again... but yet the cycle that we play through in the game is different than all the ones before it. You could say "that's because Kel knocks on the door" ... but yet... if you go the Hikikomori Route, that's not true. Why is this cycle different? "SUNNY ... we're moving away." That one line, spoken by Sunny's Mother, shattered Sunny's stable loop of dreaming, finding the truth, and resetting Headspace and then doing it all over again. The tally marks in the background? Are probably how many times Headspace had been reset (or they are how many days until the move, maybe). The beds? Sunny loves beds. He loves to sleep. A lot. He sleeps away the days, one by one. Tick. Tick. Tick. He's depressed and he just wants to hide in his dream world while the days go by, one at a time. Tick. Tick. Tick. In fact, once you answer the phone, that's the only sound in this room. Tick. Tick. Tick. A clock ticks away endlessly in the background. But yet, Sunny's also scared of moving away, his friends will be gone forever. Right now, he's holding onto the hope that maybe someday, he can have his childhood back before everything went to crap. Until.. "SUNNY ... we're moving away." There's no turning back now. Their house has been sold, they're going to move, and his friends will be gone. Forever. (or so Sunny thinks at the time).

I agree with everything you explained here. So glad that someone talking about this bc I'm not good with words lol. That room is probably my favorite black space room. Its subtle yet obvious metaphorical environment and that one line resonated so much with me. I mean, this game in general have a way of representing things metaphorically very close to my personal taste, but this room in particular really SPEAKING to me. I can totally understand the feeling of keep pushing important things away in favor of escapism until the very last chance of fixing it, or the inevitable truth. In this case, I believed Sunny must feeling torn. I believed not only that he want everything to go back the way it was but deep down, Sunny really want to tell everyone the truth but can never bring himself to do so no matter how much he missed them. He isolated himself and keep pushing away the reality. But now he's about to lose everyone for real. And if he want any chance of seeing them again as well as telling them the truth? He know damn well that he's running out of time.

Hero and Sunny share an immense amount of traits. Both of them have the fatal flaw of internalizing their feelings for the sake of others. Hero is a nice guy - he seldom ever gets angry, always tries to mediate between Kel and Aubrey, and is fine with letting people push him around if it means they'll be happy. It's the same with Sunny. Why did he continue playing violin even though he started hating it? Why did he end up helping out with the treehouse when his memories clearly state he wanted to laze about? Why did he jump from the statue into the lake even though he was afraid of heights? Very simple answer - *he didn't want to disappoint his friends.* The game makes it abundantly clear during Memory Lane sequences that *this* is the unnamed fear that spirit Mari talks about. It's not his fear of the truth - it's his fear that telling the truth will make his friends hate him. Why is it Sunny was always "such a good listener" when it came to Basil and Aubrey? I think it's partially because he is naturally empathetic and lets people vent to him, and partially because he just does not have the heart to turn them away. He's afraid if he tries to tell them he doesn't want to listen, he'll hurt them and they'll be upset with him. It's the same with the flower crown memory. Why does Sunny get up and leave? I think it's almost entirely *because Kel did first.* Why was it that Sunny snuck out to Hobbeez late at night? *Because Kel was doing it with him.* THIS is why the phrase "Waiting for something to happen?" is so crucial to the narrative. That is exactly what Sunny does. He sits, listens, watches, and waits. He is never proactive on his own - he's terrified of messing things up. Hell, when the poor kid is drowning all he can think to himself is that he is a burden to his friends, and that he is helpless. That fear of making things worse is made 1000x worse when the one time he finally is proactive, is what causes the death of the person he loved more than anything else. Just wait...and wait....and wait....and wait....and wait....and wait.....Surely, something is bound to change if you keep waiting, right? It's only when Sunny finds out he's moving away does Head Space begin to collapse rapidly. He doesn't have an infinite amount of time to wait anymore. Either he breaks free of his self imposed torment, or he remains stuck with it for the rest of his life.

Great comment! I love deep character analyses and I think you are completely on point. I am also glad that you pointed out the Hero and Omori paralells as I really identify with both characters. On the surface I seem the most like Hero, but I can identify with a lot of what Sunny is feeling. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a lot they would bond over if the ages of Kel and Hero had been switched. I wrote this in another comment and don't feel like spamming by posting it here as well, but I have a really deep suspicion that Sunny is autistic. Not only based on his behavior and headspace in the game, but also because of what snippets we get of how he acted before the "concert".

I know this is late but a couple of details Mari did actually save Sunny from drowning when he was young which further adds on to the immense guilt felt by Sunny. Hero learned piano after Mari died more than likely to keep a part of her with him. When he tells Sunny to get some sleep if you walk back in he’s crying quietly saying to himself “oh Mari…” When Sunny pushes Mari down the stairs she dies because she snaps her neck, whether this is just happening at some point when she falls down the stairs or when she lands on the broken violin is up to you. There are descriptions for the truth photos in the code and on the wiki. One of these photo descriptions describes how Mari is actually lighter than she looks explaining how Sunny and Basil managed to do the thing. Sunny brings Mari to their room hoping she would wake up but she never does. Basil comes up with the idea to frame it as a suicide to protect sunny. During this entire time Sunny is disassociating and is just on autopilot. When outside Basil makes the noose and does the “work” while sunny stares lifelessly into the leaves not wanting to face reality. He only comes to the realization its not a dream when he sees Mari’s hanging body swaying in the wind. When confronting Basil the reason he attacks and ends up stabbing your eye is because he isn’t trying to hurt Sunny, he’s basically delirious and trying to kill “something” as he sees it behind sunny. Sunny is fighting Basil because if you choose to go back to sleep Basil takes his own life so Sunny is trying to stop Basil from hurting himself. Its tragic these two best friends are fighting to save the other. Something is the manifestation of Mari’s eyes poking through her hair likely due to Rigor Mortis as when people die their eyes tend to go wide open due to muscles and both Sunny and Basil made the mistake of turning around when they shouldn’t have Sunny says more than just “I have to tell you something” his only other line in the game hilariously is “PIZZA DELIVERY” If Basil kills himself when you go to the body Hero urges you to not look and just go home wanting to protect Sunny from seeing his dead best friend. Thats just a few details I’ve found/remember what a fantastic game and seeing Mari hold Sunny while crying during duet makes me cry every time I see it.

Im pretty sure the lines talking about how light mari is are referencing the fact that sumny doesn't even understand basil is there at first. The first time sunny notices basil is when they are already outside. Before that he just notes that maris body is light and that he can hear someone speaking and someones hands on him. He is dissasociating so hard that he doesn't even realize someone else is present.

btw, the most common form of SOMETHING is obviously Sunny's mind's distorted view of that final 'photo' in the truth segment. Mari hanging, her hair drooping down with a single eye staring right at Sunny. Right after that 'photo' they even show the comparison with it abruptly fading into SOMETHING. It also explains why, out of everyone, SOMETHING kept telling Sunny it loves him in that room in Black Space. A huge aspect of Sunny's guilt of killing Mari is the fact that she really did love him, which is why SOMETHING taunts him with that. Despite their arguments, Mari in Sunny's mind is shown to be a perfect loving person. She hugs him, heals the party, acts as a SAVE feature, etc. Sunny wants to relive his days with his loving sister and his dear friends (whom he believes he ruined - confirmed by their confessions in the real world) so he made headspace. But likely in one of his many resets of headspace, Mari either got hurt, or turned into SOMETHING, reminding Sunny of the truth, so OMORI banished her to merely be an unproblematic save feature. OMORI is so dedicated to hiding the truth from Sunny, that's why he kept killing Basil in Black Space - Headspace Basil kept trying to reveal the truth. It's also why when Headspace Basil sees that photo of the violin and it all goes scary back at the beginning of the game, Basil gets sent to Black Space and Omori is safe in White Space. Whenever there's some Scary cutscene risking the repressive safety of Headspace, Omori goes straight to White Space and removes the door to headspace. The throne cutscene perfectly illustrates how Omori has gotten way too powerful. This emotionless, black and white, caricature of himself that Sunny created, named after his sister's piano, built to go on adventures with the younger, purpler(?) versions of his friends and protect him from the truth - keeping all his horrific thoughts in a black lightbulb (BLACK SPACE) has become more powerful than anything and will actually brutally murder the friend that Sunny loves and feels extremely guilty about traumatising, just because that trauma Sunny feels guilty about inflicting on Basil is something Omori is built to HIDE and REPRESS. Basil knows about what happened to Mari? He gets decapitated by an elevator. Anyway, OMORI is the best game I've ever played and my 3rd favourite piece of media ever 10/10 i love sweetheart

SOMETHING being mari’s eye staring at sunny through her black hair is the perfect metaphor for his guilt in my opinion. even if he’s hidden the truth from everybody else, there’s still a single eye that stared at him as he ran away. there’s always something inside of him that knows he can’t run for much longer

A key detail I like is that Omori actually turns around to look at Sunny when he breaks the black light bulb, showing he is actually a bit shocked which would mean Sunny's been close to the truth before but Omori forces it away and Sunny hasn't realised the significance of the light bulb until the final day. This also goes in with the theory I have about dissociative amnesia and Omori being the reason seeing as Omori was most likely created after the incident happened, making Sunny dissociate when he got too close to the truth creating a neverending loop until Sunny finally listens to the knocking Kel does at the front door, helping him try to get through his amnesia

@@mj-sw2nh Undertale is a phenomenal game and doesn't need to be packed with 20+ of content to be considered "on the same level" as it completely thrives on its quality. Even the NPC's had their unique charms and dialogue reflective of Toby's humour, whereas I found many of OMORI's NPC's to be bland and quite lacking in terms of personality. Of course the amount of effort that went into OMORI's creation is outstanding and leaves plenty hours of content to explore even after finishing the main storyline, but it can also make certain sections in the game feel tedious and some of the extra characters a bit insipid and uninspired as a result of having so much content, whereas Undertale thrives on the fact that every single detail was carefully considered, crafted and polished into the game it is now and what gave it its revolutionary status amongst RPGs and why its considered way ahead of its time, which it was. Basically all this is to say that I don't think comparing the two games in terms of "levels" is necessary or even accurate as they both thrive on different elements of quality and quantity. But I definitely agree that OMORI's hand drawn artstyle combined with its animation is amazing and so unique, one of the most memorable things about it. I could go on about what makes these two games so amazing, but I think I'll have to stop here lol

@@GoldenWreck yes I completely agree! We definitely are only really “differing in opinion” because of how we were affected by each game. The message of love, loss, and guilt that Omori portrayed along with its hours of gameplay (good for an exploratory little weasel like me but I understand how that would seem like filler to most) speaks to me on a personal level, along with the little things that make it up like the soundtrack (which undertale also nails) and art (which I would argue undertale also nails even if the styles are much different) along with the story and character design all feel very down to earth and relatable to me (which I’d also argue is the same as Undertale! Just slightly different vibe, more of a mature energy with a little more implications of gore and heavy topics like s*icide and such) and undertale speaks to you in a very specific and special way! (It also has for me, no doubt about it. Toby is an amazing writer and character designer and I love his work with a passion, especially deltarune) so there really is no comparison or competition between the two! Sorry if I offended you in any way, please trust that I do love undertale and I wasn’t trying to diss it for being “less than omori in anyway, it’s just a different vibe that I personally find little more interesting. (Again. Watching play throughs of deltarune really shows how much I love Toby’s more “mature” style of game creation, because I do love the direction that game took. I love all of Toby’s work, especially because I grew up on homestuck and knew Andrew hussie and Toby fox lived together and worked on their games together. Sorry again if I offended you in any way.) I absolutely thing both games are amazing in their own way, but I do still believe (imo) that they have different vibes that shouldn’t be compared just because they’re both “indie games” like a lot of people say. I hope this makes sense lmao. Thank you for your side of the story! /gen POs

@@mj-sw2nh Aw you're awesome, no don't worry you're completely fine, I guess I was just disagreeing with the wording about the games being on different levels since they both have touched the hearts of thousands and more, just in different ways. So in my perspective, they both successfully served their purposes in the topics and areas they intended to tackle, so shouldn't be compared in terms of one being better than the other (which is the impression I got was happening from the wording, otherwise apologies for getting that wrong.) Guys if you wonder: the fotos that you collect in the end and where mari is dying or something (sorry for bad English btw) I found text to the pictures and here it is : photo of A Wall - You heard some scoffing from behind the wall, but paid it no notice. You were in no mood to focus. You were overcame. You were sick of everything. You know it wasn't a big deal, but you couldn't control yourself. Photo of a Broken Violin - Your precious violin lay shattered at the bottom of the staircase. You threw it in a rage. Your fingers were shaking in pain... practicing over and over... but you still make mistakes after mistakes. This was all a bad idea. photo of an Argument - MARI was yelling at you. You couldn't understand what she was saying. She didn't understand you at all... She didn't understand that you just weren't good enough. The only thing you hold onto was your anger. This pain... was it her fault? Photo of a Fight - MARI blocked your path. She says that she isn't finished talking. She tells you not to run away... but why not? You did this all for her! Why was she yelling at you? You didn't understand... photo of a Murder - You lose all sense and push her down the staircase. photo of silence - You watched MARI crush on top of your broken violin. The sound wakes you up to nothing but silence. You called out to her, but she doesn't answer. Your heart sinks into your stomach. photo of Panic - It happened in an instant. You didn't mean to do that. Well, you did mean to push her, didn't you? It was an accident, right? You're not sure. You tremble your way down the staircase. photo of Desparation - You call her name, but she doesn't answer. You sweep the bits of wood from her body. Nothing but scratches. You turn her around and see her face. She looks asleep... but then, why isn't she answering? Photo of an Accomplice - You pick up Mari and drag her up the stairs. She feels lighter than you think. She just needs to lie down in a bed... She just needs some rest. photo of Disbelief - Your heart beats out of your chest. Your head feels fuzzy. You lose vision. You push the door to the bedroom open, and make your way to her bed. She's going to be okay, right? This is just a dream, right? photo of Anguish - You call her name over and over, but she doesn't answer. You watch the light from the window cast a shadow over her face. She's expressionless. You sink your fingers into her arm, and break down into tears. Photo of Guilt - You want to scream for help, but you're afraid... you mumble to your self... what if they ask what happened? There's no way you can tell them the truth. Who would be able to forgive him? Who would believe... that was... an accident? photo of an Idea - A whisper comes from behind you, but you ignore it. A cry comes from behind you, but you ignore it. You cover your face with your arms. This isn't real, None of this real. Why won't you wake up? Photo of Hopelessness - Everything appears dark. The shadows slither around you, You don't understand what is happening... Your head starts to feel fuzzy... You sink into a crevice in your mind... an empty white room. Photo of Support - Your shoulders feel heavy. A familiar voice whispers something unspeakable. Your eyes widen. It tells you to follow its lead. It says... it's the only way out... It says... that everything will be okay. Photo of Betrayal - You pick up MARI's body and lift it down the staircase. She feels lighter than you think. You feel multiple eyes shift their gaze to you. You keep your eyes toward the ground. photo of Hope - You hear the sliding of a familiar door. A voice tells you to walk. A gist of wind enters the room as the light outside engulfs you. You keep your eyes toward the ground. Photo of a Tree - As you face forward, you listen to the crunching of the grass and feel the coolness of the wind. You hear the leaves in the trees riffle as the sun begins to set... but you try to ignore it. It's all just a dream... Photo of a Branch - You lay down MARI's body and look up for the first time. Small rays of light shine through the cracks in the leaves. You relish in its beauty and savor the moment. You think... even if this is all real, if you keep looking at the leaves, that... everything will be okay. photo of a Rope - You hear pacing. the crunching of the grass sifting back and forth. You think you see a figure pick something off the ground, but you're not sure. You keep staring at the leaves overhead. Everything will be okay... You think... Everything will be okay. Photo of Hands - You hear shuffling. You hear dragging.. and creaking... and pulling. Something is happening. but you refuse to look away from the leaves. Your head feels fuzzy again. You bite your tongue and attempt to wake up one last time, but it's no use... You're still here. Photo of a Lie - As you and BASIL step into the house, you look back towards the trees and see it. The light engulfs it as it sways in the wind... For a moment, you feel at peace. You hate yourself for feeling this way. Is that all, then? 15 everything going to be okay now? Photo of Legs - You feel a cold hand clutch yours. You try to jerk away, but it squeezes back, unwilling to let you go. The hand drags you backward. You look up and see your best friend for the first time... BASIL. You see the tears falling from his tired eyes as he looks ahead. You suddenly realize that none of this is a dream. All of this is real. Photo of Something - Suddenly, BASIL stops. You look up at his eyes... but this time, they're wide awake, staring at Something. You turn your eyes toward it as well, though you wish you didn't. An eye meets yours. Your heart sinks into your stomach. You shouldn't have looked back... You just.... shouldn't... have looked... And btw thanks for the analysis

Mari died on the stairs, even if her eyes happened to still be open when they looked back, i doubt her eyes would have been aligned with theirs. Something is what sunnys and basils guilt wracked an horrified young minds saw. They felt horrible and in their minds what they did was inexcusable. On the subject of omori eating sunny's head as an apple, I think it's a refrence to Adam eating an apple from the tree of knowledge of good and evil which was forbidden. In the story from the bible, adam gained knowledge but also understood the unpleasentries of being wise such as understanding the concept of cold. Omori eating sunny's apple head represents that he becomes stronger by obtaining the knowledge of sunny and his past, but also forbidden because omori himself forbids sunny from remembering the truth of Mari's death.

I can only add my voice to the choir - this is a very special experience that's worth having blind (lucky me) and an example of how games are not just for kids. @5:30: One very, *VERY* important detail you forgot to mention: When the screen goes white, it plays a long ringing tone (not the "something spooky is about to happen" tone, but a different lower pitched tone). There are only two other places in the entire game this tone is played: When Omori hauls Basil out of Black Space in the Hiko Route, and if you give up in the fight against Omori at the end of the Sunny Route. The same thing is going on in both instances. Of course, the first-time player starting this game is not going to know the meaning behind the tone and is going to just dismiss it, and people who get the "True Ending" aren't going to ever hear it again and will quickly forget about it. But, if you play the game again after seeing either of the two aforementioned endings... you just might remember it and go "woah..."

@45:00 The Headspace Photo Album mentions Hero and Kel are brothers with the line of "Ahh, brotherly love" and also, the picture of Hero and Mari sitting side by side, Hero is taller than Mari, and Mari is taller than Aubrey by quite a significant margin, so it's pretty easy to tell they're older. But, it's not too big of a stretch that some people would forget that, as that happens at the very beginning of the game and it's a good ~3-5 hours of gameplay between then and Faraway Town.

@1:35:00 ... "it's a distraction" ... yes.... yes it is a distraction. A _literal_ distraction. That's Omori's/Headspace's _whole purpose,_ afterall. To distract Sunny from the Truth. Didn't you notice that anytime you dive into Headspace, you go through these cycles? You talk about Basil with your friends, you set out looking for him which leads to these non-sensical quests, and at the end of the quest, you are either sent back to whitespace to wake up, or, in the case of the Resort/Humphrey section, you do the nonsensical quest, and then get some more deep mind stuff and/or talking about Basil and then jump back into another nonsensical quest. IMO, it's Sunny and Omori struggling against one another: Sunny wants to learn the truth, Omori wants to keep it buried. Sunny wins for awhile (the section with Mari on the docks) and then Omori yoinks control back (Lost Resort) and then Sunny manages to get a little control again (the weird philosophical stuff with the weird creatures in the section before Humphrey) and then Omori yoinks control back again (Humphrey).

I love ghost Basil's line about being split in half. Sunny just hides from the world, shutting out everything and everyone, but Basil is still(somewhat) a part of it. Basil is holding this terrible secret, and torn between telling the truth or staying faithful to his BEST FRIEND(which that lines come up a lot in the photo album). Basil is in so much pain because although Sunny caused the incident, he's been able to completely repress it in headspace, while it seems Basil has only been letting that darkness consume him for those 3 years.

also it has a really good double meaning since while sunny's escapism mentally split basil in real world, his escapism also mentally split basil in headspace too; since basil is the only one in hs who sunny has triggering memories of spanning beyond the recital day he quite literally has to split who he knows as basil into the parts he wants to remember (hs basil) and the parts he doesn't (stranger). it's such a well thought out line.

I just love the final battle with Omori and how symbolic it is. Just like how “defeating” him is initially impossible, people can never fully “recover” from their trauma. It will always be a part of them even if they can overcome it and begin to heal. After we initially lose the battle is when the crucial moment comes. We can choose to either to give in to it, or we can choose to accept it so we can move on and begin to heal. Omori fading into Sunny in the cutscene after the fight symbolizes Sunny doing just that. It could easily have played out with Omori collapsing to the ground dead, but that’s not what happened. they embrace each other before Omori vanishes. Omori and the experiences that resulted in his creation are part of him and can never fully disappear, but Sunny has come to terms with what happened, is ready to move on, and doesn’t have to rely on Omori anymore to protect him from the truth.

Few things: * With good ending focusing on Sunny accepting the truth and finding strength to confess to his friends, which allows him to move on, you haven't mentioned the closure for Basil. If you constantly water his flowers, you will get extra cutscene, showing both Sunny's and Basil's "Something" disappearing, since he no longer needs to carry this burden. I find it interesting that you basically need to show that you care for Basil to see the part of ending that actually shows him getting better. * Small detail obvious if you've played is Sunny's crush on Aubrey. It is pretty much mentioned directly, with Basil mocking Sunny in one of flashbacks over the fact that Sunny always asks for to look at photos if Aubrey is there. A little bit more subtle is the fact that this goes both ways - not only when Aubrey is basically the only person to explicitly ask Sunny to keep contact with her, but also if you do picknic on Mari's grave, you can notice that Aubrey constantly glances at Sunny while sitting near him. * When Aubrey makes the scene in the church, I think people around explicitly mention that she went full delinquent when her father left, which apprently happened already after Mari's death. * Extra small detail about Aubrey is that even with her house being almost completely rundown, she keeps really good care of her room. * Small possible interpretation on last scene in Black Space. I'm not sure why Basil keeps dying in previous rooms, but in this one, him being killed by other party members might refer to Sunny's fear to reveal truth to others not only because they might not forgive him, but that they might also not forgive Basil.

2:32:40 Something EXTREMELY important to note about the music here that you didn't note: The music seems to be actively trying to drown to the violin, as if his mind is still trying to repress everything, and make him forget again, yet he continues to persevere. There's also the distorted noises - they aren't there just for show. If you listen closely, you can make certain things out, and as it turns out, the distorted noises are chopped up and heavily distorted pieces of the argument that Sunny and Mari had. The two most clear things in it are a scream followed by a series of thuds, and Mari gasping and yelling "Stop it!" Honestly the attention to detail is just ridiculous, and that makes this song all the more haunting

My first interpretation of seeing the photo on the ground 2:15:45 was "Mari took a picture of the tree before she killed herself and Basil knew but didn't stop her and THATS why Omori/Sunny is resentful to him" ....course there were more pictures that revealed a much darker twist but it's pretty crazy how the game was able to pull that BIG twist off the whole time by setting up that obvious self-unaliving twist to throw you off.

Wow... This was an incredibly detailed analysis. Thank you for making it as it is really well done. My own personal thoughts on the suicide setup. I personally *do* feel like this part stretches my suspension of disbelief just a bit too much compared to the rest of the story, yet I can't think of a better background for the specific type of guilt and trauma the game is portraying. I do think it is possible for the kids to come up with this plan, in fact I think this would be a very different (and a much more generic) story if they didn't, and it serves to give more depth to the characters. Kids will go to any length to hide their tracks when they make a mistake, I even read about a boy of a similar age who burned his house down to hide his grandfather's death. I just think this specific method goes a bit beyond the realm of plausibility. A lot of people bring up Basil knowing how to tie a noose, which is very unlikely (even if you are suicidal, this is before wide access to the internet and a noose is not a type of knot you would use in real life) but not impossible. The bigger issue to me is how they managed to actually string her up, especially in the state they are in. They would not only need to reach a high and strong enough branch to support her weight and throw a rope over it, but also fasten it to a different point on the tree, and drag the body straight up, with added friction over the tree branch which requires significantly more force than simply dragging her body around (even up stairs) with them needing to fasten it at the same time. This is something I quite simply don't believe they would be able to do, especially as Omori is shown to have been quite despondent at the time. Regarding the parents hiding the incident, I also do not think this is as clear cut as you think. While this is certainly one way to interpret the scenes, keep in mind that blackspace shows a very discordant and chaotic version of Sunny's mind. Pretty much the whole rest of blackspace shows Sunny's interpretation of his emotions, other people's thoughts regarding him and his past so I think it would be pretty jarring if the scene with his father played out pretty much how it is shown. Regardless of the incident, his parents split up when he was just a kid, and it is very common for children of parents who split up to blame themselves, especially if the break up was acrimonious. It would be perfectly understandable for Sunny to blame himself for the split, as Mari's death as well as Sunny's isolation likely caused a strain in their relationship no matter the real events. Since his father seems to have moved away when they have split, it is perfectly understandable why Sunny might think that his father hates him, or that he deserves to be hated by him for what he did (this wouldn't be the first time he projects his self loathing onto others and is quite common for people with depression). Nothing in his mother's response makes it seem like conclusive interpretation of his parents knowing about the incident either. His sister did just (supposedly) die by her own hands out of nowhere, and then her already quiet son began regressing even more into himself. There is nothing unusual about being worried about losing Sunny as well, and keep in mind that she just experienced major trauma herself which likely deeply affected her. This is of course just personal perspective, and you might have a different one, but while I would understand the parents wanting to protect Sunny, I think there is no way they would keep up the lie that their happy daughter committed suicide if they knew the truth. Keep in mind that this game takes place around 20 years ago when the stigma surrounding suicide was stronger than it is now, so they were likely whispered about as bad parents, particularly as Mari was a happy and successful young woman. I think they would rather pretend that she fell down her stairs herself, yet it is made clear that everyone knows it is a suicide. This makes me think that the player really is supposed to see Basil's plan as having been successful. Sorry for the essay. Ultimately this is not that big a deal for me as it is a necessary scene breaking my suspension of disbelief, rather than an unnecessary one, and the reveal really is masterfully done. This is one of only three criticisms I have of the story, which speaks to its high quality (believe me, I am a legendary nitpicker). Only great works of art can sustain the amount of excellent story and character analysis Omori has, and I keep discovering new details and perspectives. Ultimately Omocat delivered a pretty straightforward story all things considered, but it is layered in such an ingenious way you can keep pulling them apart to find new ideas. Again, great job with the video. I really appreciate how you only incorporated information in the game itself (not game files or prerelease stuff which ultimately isn't a part of the story) and didn't go into post game stuff. I love the good ending, and think people constantly talking about whether his friends will or won't forgive Sunny are really missing the point of the story.

A thing I want to mention is that if the whole thing was orchestrated by sunny and basil alone its likely they wouldn't tell anyone based off some of their other actions. However, it is implied both his parents know the truth. Sunny's father is chopping down the tree where they hung her saying "you are not my son". And there is a message in a box in blackspace where sunny's mother is trying to calm him down and tells him the iconic "everything will be okay".
@shineseeker7
@shineseeker7 2 жыл бұрын
Adding to this, Sunnys mother is very distant in the game after the incident so I'm not sure if she would notice or care that sunny was acting different. IMO the interaction with his mother had to have happened in the moment which caused the overwhelming emotions and why it is one of sunny's core memories.
@shineseeker7
@shineseeker7 2 жыл бұрын
Sorry for adding on this again lol. You make a good point that sunnys dad scene may not play out the same as in the real world but I don't think its a coincidence that the father said the in the middle of chopping down the tree. I think the possibility of sunny thinking that's how his father feels about the divorce would be more plausible if he wasn't also in the middle of destroying something directly associated with mari.
@kjartanskarpheinsson1753
@kjartanskarpheinsson1753 2 жыл бұрын
@@shineseeker7 As I wrote, this is one interpretation, but I wouldn't say it is as clear cut as it is made to be in the analysis video. To Sunny, the divorce would absolutely be related to Mari as he strung her up. If he didn't, it's perfectly plausible in his mind that his parents might have stayed together and so Mari's death (or rather her hanging) was directly associated with the divorce. Added to that, Black Space is the place where his deepest fears reside, so it makes sense to me that he would be absolutely terrified of his parents finding out. To be perfectly honest, I don't fully understand you argument regarding Sunny's mother. If you are saying the scene happened shortly after Mari's death, I agree, but again, I don't really see it as compelling evidence and came up with an alternative hypothesis in my initial response. The stuff you mentioned in the first response are the arguments made in the video which I am addressing in the initial comment. It is definitely possible that his parents hid the murder, but for the reasons I mentioned in my original post, I do not find it likely, and I like pushing against established narratives as it forces others to come up with more sophisticated answers and explanations for their theories (like you did just now ;-)).
@shineseeker7
@shineseeker7 2 жыл бұрын
I agree and I think your perspective is also really interesting! I also had a lot fun deciding which I thought was real and honestly I still can't decide. But I think I like the parents knowing as a plot device (totally not me just wanting sunny to feel a little less guilt haha 😭 /s).

fun fact! in OMORI there's a secret value called "WTF value", which enables "secret events" of sorts! it ranges from 1-13, and the higher the number, the more bizarre the events are, starting with finding a photo of "someone familiar" in the junkyard (value equal or less than 2) and up to one of the Humphrey bumps in the "beach area" saying "I fucking love air conditioning" or the movers turning to shadow creatures (value of 13)

I thought Omori killing Basil was like a power move on his part. Because Sunny wanted to save him but Omori wanted to scare him by showing he could act on his own that way. Kind of emphasized with how he took a seat in his hand throne and appearing like he was the king of this place and even Sunny. It was kind of a menacing scene to me, seeing the dream character you thought you had control over the whole time acting on his own will and doing things you don't want him to do.

In my opinion, I think Something represents Mari, more specifically the Guilt surrounding Mari. The one eye represents how Mari seemed to stare down at Sunny when he turned to look at the hanging corpse. As eyes don’t close automatically close when one dies, Sunny got a good look of what seemed to be Mari staring down at him. As such, when the line “Something is behind you”, it seems to refer to the moment when Sunny turned to look at Mari’s corpse. So ‘Something’ represents the guilt and fear surrounding Mari.

One of my favorite things about Omori is how symbolic everything is. Coming from someone who had a rough childhood and developed mental illness at an early age nothing about yourself really made any sense without some sort of therapy or wake up call. I went into this game blind and felt deeply heard when it was finished. When my mental illness started acting up it all felt nonsensical and confusing, but by the end of it I understand it so much more than I did than. It reminds me of how most people feel throughout the game. You start confused or expecting something completely different from the truth. Anyway, that's just my thought. Just wanted to vent a bit. 😊

Just my two Cents about the end part in the hospital with that bright, white lighting: I think it's Sunny himself seeing something good again. It's really bright because if you look at his bad real life hallucinations they are all dark and scary for him. This though shows optimism which is an overwhelming feeling after feeling like drowning or repressing all your (mostly negative) emotions. This feels like it's too much, especially when you went through a rollercoaster of emotions just before that.

Great video, I hope you get more views and subscribers. You were very comprehensive, probably the most comprehensive one out there, I liked listening to your analysis because I missed a lot of optional content, and I'm surprised how important some of those scenes were! It's as you said, there can be a tad too much content such as the subobjectives in the Castle, so it's not fun playing through Omori so many times, plus with easily missed scenes you'd need a walkthrough and you'd need to go back and forth to ensure you don't miss stuff which can lead to playing it not being as fun, so it was great you made this.

This is probably my favorite video currently on KZbin, I originally watched this to get an idea of what at all happened during Omori and if I had missed anything and I loved it to death, paying attention to the entire video in full length. But even after having watched it initially with my full attention on it, I still come back to this video every few days just to listen. I put it as background noise when I'm doing chores, I have it on when I'm playing games mindlessly, I put it on to just pay full attention to it again, it's everything I could want in a video. Informative, funny, interesting, and blends the soundtrack from the game perfectly in with the commentary it's just mwah

I'm all the more excited to replay this game a few times to get all the achievements, and see several events you discussed firsthand. I got the good ending and didn't touch the hikkikomori route during my blind playthrough. I love this game, and this video essay was very thorough and eye-opening to some story elements I missed!

Something I love about this review is that despite your clear love for the game, you can point out issues and flaws with the game, which is really important.

I may have never played this game but I will say this video does an amazing job of breaking down the story while keeping me interested enough to still play on my own. The art style is absolutely gorgeous hand drawn animation was absolutely the correct way to go for this game. It’s simple yet very unique and also just kinda cute to look at, even the creepy bits lol

5:31 Yeah... Those tissues aren't for mucus. I can say that with absolute certainty because before OMORI was a video game, it was actually a series of comic strips from 2011 to 2012 on tumblr, and the first comic practically screams out the actual use for the tissues.

by that logic, abbi (the wisest) is also his.. ahem “fantasy,” like she was in the comics, and Aubrey is his menhera girlfriend as well. the comics and the game are completely separate from each other- omocat has stated that

1:35:15 I think the apple being your head might’ve been adding the the theme of forbidden knowledge, ie the head of your real self and it being an apple. Even though you didn’t learn any secrets yet it makes me think it has to do with you finally revealing the truth you’ve been hiding from for so long.

um ackshually... 🤓 The photos are not, in fact, Basil's memory, and rather Sunny's, with third-person shots there for the sake of storytelling. He did not witness Mari's fall. He came by when Sunny dragged her upstairs and put her on the bed. He freaked out and wanted to save Sunny, but made an already devastating situation infinitely worse. The idea wasn't Sunny's, he didn't help almost at all, he just helped to take Mari to the tree and watched in horror. Because of that i feel like he was even more aware of what happened, looking at Basil hanging his sister's corpse, imagery sinking in deeper and deeper with the initial shock wearing off with each second.

2:21:15 "We don't know why he's here, but with all of you being friends, it's not a stretch to say that perhaps he had come around yours to *_hang_* out." Well, and that's what he did. It's hard to understand anything in 'Blacker Space' but we can learn there a bit about Sunny's parents and additional confirmation that they know the truth about what happened. 1. Sunny's Father entering a car and driving away, presumably leaving them. 2. Sunny's Mom is trying to conceal her pain from him, evident by her statue's face appearing normal when he's looking but twisting itself when he's behind her. 3. There's a box that says: "You hear MOM crying softly. There, there... SUNNY... We'll protect you... Everything will be okay...". They know the truth.

1:59:10 why does this area make me think of a factory manufacturing the dreamworld versions of Sunny’s friends/a lab where their memories and personalities are altered to act in certain ways when interacting with the dreamer
