How do you solve a murder in the Arctic Circle?
In Ilulissat, Greenland, a frontier town 250 miles north of the Arctic Circle, lives a community of hunters and fishermen with five regular policemen, one amateur judge and a crime rate 18 times higher than that of Denmark.

I watched it because of your comment and am so glad that I did. I’m originally from a small town in Alaska and saw how damaging alcohol was. We weren’t as remote or isolated as in her village, but there’s tragedy in forcing indigenous people to leave their villages and intrinsic way of life. It pulls their souls out of their bodies and dampens their spirit. I happen to agree with their community’s way of punishment for crimes. It wouldn’t work in 1st world societies, but is the best solution for places like that.

@C orrine Tomlyanovich People drink, period. Even elephants and monkeys will get drunk off of over-ripe fruit hanging on trees. It feels good to get a bit tipsy, and sometimes people (and animals) overdo it. The problem is most Inuit and Asian peoples don't have the gene (?) to process alcohol properly. Many people who have this condition turn bright red after a single drink. If they continue with more drinking, they have a physical problem - their bodies just cannot process alcohol normally.

Following the police officer's statement would two years in an open institution make a better human being of Jens Reimer? Definitely not. No remorse at all. No sympathy with the victim in his family either. So what was their success rate on making people better? It certainly had no effect on wife battering it seems.

I wonder how things are now, considering that this documentary was filmed 2 decades ago. It would be great to have a new documentary on this situation, to shed light on how and if things have gotten somewhat better in terms of crime. I guess that the situation is mostly the same though, since the issues caused by colonialism cannot be resolved that easily.

This is the very sad and common outcome of many first nation peoples of the world. Their ways and societies are broken down by colonialism and modernity and then the scrouge of alchohol was introduced which is the worst possible thing in their fragile situation. Take away alchohol and at least 80% of these crimes would not have been committed!

Equipping a convicted criminal with a loaded gun while he is serving his sentence makes the completely weird in my opinion. Ten years before he unloaded a gun into his wife and is free lamenting about his crime in his home. Weirdos. Ah yes, and of course it was the wife's fault.
@lisahinton9682

@SabinaEins I agree with you! The cold way he said, "Someone made me angry" sent chills down my back. No one "makes" us angry, as we alone are in charge of our emotions. And "someone"? He can't say his wife's name, or even "my wife"? The guy is a cold-blooded sociopath and now plays the victim with zero remorse for taking the life of his children's mother.

Tina that was my first thought instantly. The chains make it even more horrific. Just let the dogs free if you clearly have zero interest in those poor animals' well being. If you're using the energy to walk over and chain the dogs just bring a food bowl or a blanket with you. I mean this is a whole different kind of animal abuse. Literally keeping those dogs for the sole reason to watch them suffer...

@foxtailedcritter Four years, reduced with good behavior to two years and eight months. Don't exaggerate. By the way, have you ever been routinely beaten for everything and nothing? Lived in fear 24 hours/day for years on end? Did whatever it took (pop out kids, don't pop out kids, go to a church you don't like, eat foods you don't like, lose weight, gain weight, walk on eggshells literally 100% of the time), so as to not get beaten? She was probably beaten nearly every day, raped, and verbally abused. You can see it on her face - she was traumatized by the man. She should have been given therapy (for the no-doubt PTSD she has) and weekly massages until she was feeling better, and zero jail time. But go on and sit in judgment for a situation you clearly know nothing of.
