@@shiazindabad835 One thing that came to my mind was that this woman was German. And Germany, being a relatively safe and developed country, teaches women that they are not at high risk for things like this, and also that they are just as capable as men in most ways. While I believe both of those to be true for the most part, when you go to other parts of the world like this, you are not as safe and criminals look at women differently. In many cases they look at them as potential victims, or easy targets.

Certain folk choose to be who they are. There's no remote control making them do what they have enough time to think about not doing. His mother (like the rest of the villagers) had tact and a level of decency that had no interest in making excuses for what she birthed. I can only imagine the level of embarrassment that she felt from his actions. If a high percentage of individuals in your environment operate in a positive fashion and you are choosing to be a thorn, there's no saving you. Plus, who in their right mind desires to be a savior to begin with?!? You either step up on behalf of preserving self or fall by the wayside due to self abandoning your crazy ass.

This actually crossed my mind. I wondered if the flower stand attendee had called someone to discuss the beautiful tourist who just arrived as an opportunity to connect with western wealth. This is a practice I have seen all over the world. I remember once walking down a street in Egypt and watching the phone calls made and received as I made my way down the street. A hotel I stayed at in Ethiopia called local 'guides' the minute I arrived. In Ghana the sellers would call male relatives to come and 'charm' for the opportunity to hopefully make a connection, they would arrive at the shops (with flowers) to approach you and say, 'I love you,' and 'you are beautiful,' and marry me,' and follow you relentlessly asking you to marry them. Your comment makes me think of this scenario as very likely. It offers an explanation for the flower stand attendee leaving knowing she had not returned and perhaps knowing foul play and coming forward after experiencing great shame.

I personally only met few men that were stronger than me. But does that make me safe? No. It doesn't even make them safe. Many people travel alone and end up being just fine, sadly, there are few cases like this that bad things do happen... You saying that maybe she should've agreed to sex is disgusting. There's no guarantee that someone will let you go just because you accepted. Then saying: ''what was the point of confronting him?'' like... are you joking? She was being ATTACKED, of course she's gonna fight for her life. Don't give me crap, ''especially girls''. Give both of children the same amount of freedom, boys get raped and assaulted as well, A LOT actually, but sadly it's not talked about it much, not to mention that if they are assaulted by teachers that look good, their friends mothers etc. people comment disgusting stuff like ''he's lucky''. So no, boys shouldn't have more ''freedom'' than girls. You shouldn't forbid kids to do stuff. You can't live in fear, but just teach them to never be alone and always pay attention to people around them.

In 2019, I worked in Bangkok and took a week’s holiday to Koh Samet. Like Miriam, I was so careful, aware, didn’t draw attention to myself, etc. I had a great time and didn’t make any stupid decisions, but the number of times I realised ‘this is a risky situation’ was unreal. Women can only do so much - often pure dumb luck is the reason we can walk away unscathed. Thailand is a wonderful country with amazing and friendly people, but danger lurks everywhere.

Yeah. I travel alone a lot....like you said, we can only do so much. This kind of scenario is the worst nightmare for all women, I feel. Total random wrong time, wrong place....even though it seemed safe with the flower person there, broad daylight, a temple, etc. In seconds that can change. It's scary to be a woman. At the same time, if I had limited myself to never doing/going anywhere alone.... I mean. I do 90% of my life alone so....my life would be extremely limited so far. It's easy for some to say "never go anywhere alone" but that's extreme and someone can miss out on a lot that. It's a mix of awareness, luck, risk, precautions... Not sure my point. I feel bad for her.

@@Magepure6749 Have you tried accepting some men hurt or kill some women, and that - yes - living as a woman, never knowing which man is good or bad, is exhausting at best and fatal at worst? And maybe realising that remarkably it *is* possible to be a man and not take offence at the reality some men are dangerous, and rally alongside other good people (men and women) to limit the power of the bad minority? It is possible; many men accept the truth without taking on even an ounce of guilt or attempting to see it as a personal attack! Or do you prefer the easy route of taking offence like it’s all about you, not the women who actually have their lives threatened? It certainly seems like you would rather attack. Interestingly, you also seem to think I’m from a country that has a firearms issue. I’m not. Criminals in my country don’t have access to firearms - I believe the last act of gun violence was in the early 90s when my country introduced proper gun control which effectively ended shootings. I don’t know, just thinking out loud.

@@Magepure6749 I know for me, my post was more to support Miriam in the video and her choice to travel alone, in spite of the inherent dangers. (some people might fault her for travelling alone). So, while I acknowledge and have experienced the dangers as a solo traveler, I also haven't totally let it stop me. If it makes you feel better, I've had many creepy experiences with stranger men, but have also had my share of stranger men helping me out when they didn't have to. As in, going out of their way for me to get where I needed, etc. So it's not all men, for sure. It's not always easy to know. But we have to try to trust our gut and all that, sometimes take leaps of faith, etc. And most of the time when we talk about the danger, it's in the situation of being alone and some dude comes out of nowhere and starts following us or making comments and won't leave us alone, insists that we go with them somewhere, etc. Those are the times I feel skeeved out. But, for example, say I'm in a store and it's only me and some dude also buying some candy. I'm not instantly like, "oh no that guy is scary!" (but, for example, if he started following me once both outside the store, then I'd begin feeling nervous). Or say if I'm in a class, and then it's just me and another male student who stay to talk to a professor after. I'm not like, "this male student and male professor are going to kill me!" No, lol. So, we don't really think it's "all men" and we're not scared in every single scenario when we're alone with a male of any sort. Every male I encounter is not inherently scary. But, there are times when it gets creepy (usually based on them doing something like following us or trying to corner us, etc) and that's just how it is lol. Also, sometimes when I'm being followed by a creepy dude, I look around for another dude who seems 'safe' in case I need help (usually this dude is minding his own business, working, something like that). Meaning, yes, I see some dudes as helpful/potentially protecting. So, again, it depends on different factors. How the dude is acting, the context, etc. Also, for what it's worth, if I had random women following me, cornering me, insisting I put my number in their phone, etc. That would also make me nervous. But it usually happens with men, not women. Though there was one time at a bus stop a woman offered for me to go in her female friend's car with her to drop me off at my hotel and something told me not to, and I didn't. Stranger danger exists lol.

@@CaledonianCloud But the government still has monopoly on guns, at least effectively, with them controlling who's allowed one and who's not --- no? I wouldn't call that _"a country without firearm issues"._ Civilian disarmament is the reason corrupt politician class can get away with pushing whatever tyranny on to us and we're just supposed to comply. Tienanmen would've never happened. Holocaust would've never happened - *as Nazis disarmed specifically Jews before carrying out their atrocities.* *Thousands other tragedies* would have *NEVER* happened if the tyrants knew they're facing an evener playing field. Even the awareness that you're trying to use force against an armed populace is often enough the deterrent against genuinely fascistic moves against the civilians. I acknowledge the world is a dangerous place, encouraging everyone to pay attention and be as prepared as you can. . Why would you assume I'm trying to _"just play offended at the fact that evil men exist"_ was honestly baffling to me --- but then I read the _"no issues"_ part and I understood. You should not expect you can outsource your safety to government bodies. Best we can do is localized, decentralized politia chosen by the people of given communities. With mass centralized police state model so popular worldwide in modern times, even in best of times, there's unforgivable issue of mass injustice ---- and then, when times inevitably get worse ---- which your stance seems to assume will never happen, and that doesn't exactly scream _"evil people exist and you should be prepared"_ ----- it can lead to unnecessary suffering of magnitude aforementioned at the start of my comment. Moreover, feel free to look up official statistics on this, but in most countries majority of violent crime victims are actually men. I am no stranger to taking precautions for my and my friends' safety, however I truly believe that it's become too normalized to just expect the enforcement division of an institution, whose main purpose is self-preservation and expansion, is a truly sustainable model for our species. I hope this better explains why I'm passionate about this and why my initial comment might have come across as cold or uncaring without the context I'm looking at this through. ~Best of Wishes from Poland, one of the most disarmed nations in Europe (y)

People should understand that even countries they call safest places, there are still monsters lurking about. As a solo traveler myself, I am very paranoid about my safety especially abroad. I notice a lot of Western foreigners take so much risks. Please take extra care especially when you're in a country where you stand out because of your skin color.

@Last Chance Right? Like what happened with the Natalee Holloway case on Aruba. It's amazing how a case like this can end with the feeling that its setting is a wonderful place. That flower shop owner's gut instincts were insane, and the conscientiousness and intelligence shown by the act of taking a possible killer's description and license plate number? Amazing. To then see how the natives of the country then respect to the dead is so touching. Even the killer's very mother showed concern for others beside her son, hoping that he would never harm someone again. Ironically, I can see why Miriam felt so safe in Thailand. I'm glad that her university honored her life.
