Jean C I lived in SA up to four years ago, now in Qld but I still love SA. My home was at Goolwa where the Murray goes out to the sea. It's great to see the Murray flowing great again but I am sad to see the flooding of properties. One year the water flow was so bad you could walk half way across the river right in Goolwa, It effected the town but worse the wild life. The pelicans could not get fish to feed the young and to leave them to die. The Coorong is massive huge bird life there but it was effected badly to. They have taken the big dredge away now it was there for eight years to keep the mouth open. I would love to be able to be there to see the water going out through the mouth. I loved living in Goolwa it's a beautiful place but circumstances changed that. It's one place I will never forget.

Yes, the millenium drought was just awful. I was in the Riverland then also, and it was a very tough time for the environment and the community - I certainly hope I never see that again in my lifetime. I'd love to see the mouth getting a good flush out too - I might take a trip down there in a month or so and put the drone up (if it's not too windy!)

I came down the Darling from Pooncarie to Wentworth on a minor flood, but resisted the temptation to try going through the weir 10 navpass: I might not get back. The water actually has a step drop through the pass, and much bigger vessels have had trouble surmounting it coming upstream. One returning upstream from a Renmark rally burnt out a gearbox clutch at weir 6. The big paddlesteamer Ruby, returning from the same rally, sideswiped the *outside* wall of lock 10. The main rise is still in Victoria, around Swan Hill. SA will have much more yet.

Good morning Amy, I’ve been wondering about how you guys are faring. I will now watch the video and see. I suppose we are none the wiser but hopefully you aren’t flooded like the thousands of houses and businesses in Shepparton, Echuca and parts of NSW. As I’m in Melbourne, I am okay, but across town, the Maribynong River inundated homes and even this week a storm cell ended up flooding sections of the eastern suburbs. I’m visiting friends about 90km from where I live, the Princes Highway was generally in good condition but there was a sign for rough road ahead. Sure enough, floods or just the relentless rains had lifted almost the whole lane of bitumen. Rather exciting when travelling at 110 kmh. Then a huge pothole appeared in my lane. I just missed that by centimetres. After that I saw three vehicles changing their tyres and one tow truck collecting a vehicle. Drive to the conditions is what to do during these floods. I return home today and I will keep my eyes peeled for any holes in the road. Cheers, Paul
@AmyOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
G'day Paul... thanks 😊 all good here, the wetlands are getting a great drink and flush at the moment 👍
@AmyOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
Oooo, yeah, avoid those potholes! There's a few shacks that have soggy feet further down river, but in the Riverland were all fairly good... anyone that's in a low lying area is generally behind a levy bank, and those are currently being shored up. It's due to get a metre higher by December some time, and by then any houses that would be at risk at the high levels will be safe and sound behind levy banks or sandbags... we get a lot of notice down this end thankfully!

We went through on Friday, when this was posted, and came back today (Monday), we couldn't believe how much it has risen since Friday. @@AmyOutdoors I reckon it will, unless they can channel it into other areas, but the rain's filling them up anyway. Yeah, that's a lot of water. My Grandfather was a farmer in Iowa for 50+ years, and he never lived by a river or large creek. Because as he put it, its not "If" the river or creek will flood, but "When" I hope every one is safe and can recover. Too bad all that water cant be channeled to a reservoir or lake.
@AmyOutdoors2 жыл бұрын
That's true, rivers are meant to rise and fall! It's making its way down to the Lower Lakes and it's filling up every reservoir, wetland and backwater along the way, so it won't all go out to sea, but it'd be great to see the mouth of the river get a good scrubbing out with all that extra water too.
