My favorite Cougar of all has got to be the early production 68 GT-E with the 390hp 427 side oiler. The red/silver 68 GT-E in the Brother's Collection is one of the sharpest looking cars you will ever see. Just gorgeous

Sweet to see. Thanks for the memories. My late uncle George had a Green on black 69 Cougar XR7, bought new from Terrace Lincoln Mercury in Burlington Ontario. He took my father and me on a ride down to the beer store, they both went in, and me being a curious 8 year old decided to play with the floor shifter. Well, with no interlock, the car rolled back when I pulled it out of park. It rolled out and into the middle of the parking lot, gliding to an eventual stop. I can still see both of them when they came out eyes wide. They both ran to the car, got in and broke out laughing... thank god.

The sweetest of the bunch for my money. Amazingly timeless design and classy.

My aunt had a 69 Cougar XR7 with the 351 Cleveland and a C6 automatic. That was such a nice car. Had plenty of power and was such a comfortable car to drive and ride in. It had every luxury option you could possibly imagine

There was never a Mustang, nor will there ever be that looked as good as this body style Cougar. In my opinion, of course.

I own a 1 of 1 69 XR7 convertible 428 SCJ 4 speed equipped with a 4.30 Detroit Locker. Car has 12k original miles and was ordered and race by east coast drag racer Eddie Merkel.

Donald Stratemeyer - Wow! That’s a special cat. Had a ‘69 that I loved a lot. Had to let it go unfortunately.
@jeremythompson98955 жыл бұрын
Wow that's pretty unusual that a drag racer would order a convertible seeing how they were heavier and not as rigid as a hard top/Coupe. Super cool car that you've got. Actually the 4.30 rear makes it a Super Cobra Jet with 4 bolt mains. Am I right? Or did that only apply to the 429 CJ/SCJ?
@paulgarvin15255 жыл бұрын
428SCJ did not have 4 bolt mains. It used a different crank, rods, pistons and balance. The block, heads and manifolds are the same.

Ford/Merc 428 CJ/SCJ actually made 410-420 HP. Like so many engines of the era they where rated lower for insurance or in Fords case more likely to get an advantage in different Drag racing classes.

All you have to do is look at the torque figures and know; unless this a freakin diesel, it's gotta be underrated on the H/P stats for engines and compression ratios for those years.

Cougars had a 110 inch wheelbase so was longer than the pony car standard 108 inches of the Mustang/ Camaro/Firebird/Barracuda. 'Cuda & Challenger in '70 were that long too.

The ram air on my '69 Torino 428 GT had a vacuum operated flapper that opened to a modified air cleaner that, when open, by passed the air filter and dumped directly into the carb throats.

Stated to have radial tires from the factory, I question that statement. I think it came with poly glass belted non radial bias ply tires. I may be wrong??
@chadakoin14 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Radials didn't start showing up on American cars until GM went with them in 73. Also note the tires listed on the buildsheet.
