Somehow Hiroshi Kitadani has been able to consistently make some of the best One Piece openings for the past 25 years, this man is the goat! I think this one is rapidly becoming my favourite of the bunch, even above We Go (which you covered on the channel several months ago). It’s such a great piece. And your breakdown of the song is superb as always! I love when you make these longer videos, taking your time to pick apart all of the nuances. Speaking as someone who isn’t very well versed in music, these videos really help me get a deeper appreciation for these songs and understand why exactly the things that work for me as a listener work from a technical standpoint

This opening is signifying a lot imo. The beginning of the final saga of OP. The culmination of 25 years of manga. The Straw Hats’ first arc as a Yonko crew Especially considering that this OP is performed by Hitoshi Kitadani. The same guy who did We Are, We Go, We Can, and Over The Top. All kind of signifying a new BIG step for the crew.

One of the main themes of the anime, especially at this point in the story is freedom, particularly having finally found the power and resources to be free to do things the way you've always wanted to. All of the exploratory riffs really play into that for me. Just like a crew on a ship, everyone in the band is together, going to the same destination, but they're all having their own adventure along the way.
@ljsnote5965 Жыл бұрын
Great reaction and breakdown! The main key of the song is G-Major. One of the many things that stand out about this arrangement to me is that it feels like a sequel to OP Opening 15 "We Go" but elevated, not so much in terms of the key (even though there are changes there too), but more so the instrumentation itself, same energy, same drive and awesome dynamics, each players instrument/part has something very unique to other to structure, plus it being sung by Hiroshi Kitadani adds that icing on the top.

my personal take on the radical shifts in key and tone in sections of this song is that it it trying to "mimic" the structure of narrative of the story of One Piece, which is told by a crew (ensemble) of unique characters and their journey from different island to different island where each island feels like its own unique story.

Dude this opening is so fucking good. They throw so many fakes at you, to they put in some nods to other ost’s etc. god it’s so fucking good. Not only that, this ost is signifiying that the crew is finally reaching the end 😢 in the openining cinematic it shows all of luffy’s costumes he wore throughout the years and it shows the crew nearing laugh tale (the final island) where the one piece is. I started this anime last year and it took me 7 months to catch up to wano, but man it’s been a crazy journey.

To contextualise this opening, the protagonist's crew are on the "Future Island" Egghead right now. It's a very scientifically advanced (a motif you can probably identify some bits of instrumentation as supporting given that info) and whimsical. It also sets up the final saga of a 25+ year long series, and the scope of the story is incredibly grand; more so than ever. I really feel like this piece does a phenomenal job of representing the content of the story tonally.

He rarely works on the openings, be he also composed the very first one, with Hiroshi Kitadani as the singer as well.
