To explain the shimmery ambient noise at the end of Versus and Duel, the album releases of the ULTRAKILL ost often have fluid transitions between a lot of the songs, so the end of Versus smoothly flows in the the beginning of Cold Winds, and the end of Duel transitions into Deep Blue

I love at 18:00 you call the rhythm more ‘danceable’. In the game, this level takes place at around the halfway mark. Compared to versus which takes place near the beginning. This is just a simple connection I noticed… Versus is a brawl, a slugfest between 2 fighters. Versus reprise is quite literally a dance, 2 destructively fast opponents locked in battle a second time…

Altars of Apostasy makes me feel like I’m levitating every single time I listen to it
@ghotiphotiАй бұрын
Something that really strikes me about Altars of Apostacy when I first heard it is that I could easily imagine it being far less of a death metal song if you simply replaced the guitars with a string ensemble. Also fun fact: There's a pdf with developer commentary on each track if you purchase the soundtrack on bandcamp! Although it's only available for acts I and II since Act III isn't complete yet. *0:00**: Altars of Apostacy (incl. "Halls of Sacrilegious Remains")* In the past year or two I've been really into black metal, so it seemed like a no-brainer to try my hand at making some for the Heresy layer, especially since I found the idea of amen break blast beats to be hilarious. This song has by far the most simultaneous guitar tracks in the game currently with the most dense section having 7 guitars playing simultaneously. I was worried it'd sound muddy, but luckily it didn't take much tweaking on the mixing to make it sound fine. The Glory reprise wasn't actually in the song when I originally wrote it, it was tacked on afterwards when I had the thought that it would help elevate the song and the section it plays in emotionally, which it most certainly did. Much like how it worked in its original context, the lightness of the Glory motif works wonderfully to contrast with the darkness of the rest of the song. The Castle Vein reprise ended up being a bit of a lucky coincidence of multiple things coming together. I had already decided that I wanted to reintroduce both the Swordsmachine and the Hideous Mass in 6-1, but I happened to see one of the beta testers for the level editor use Castle Vein for an exciting hype moment, which gave me the idea of combining those thoughts together and holding off on using Hideous Masses until the very end to have them be reintroduced alongside a new more black metal style version of the Castle Vein motif. I rarely write solos so the length of this guitar solo caused a bit of redundancy and repetition in it, but in the context of the game it really isn't noticeable at all. *9:37**: Versus* Really went ham with this one, combining the riff-based metal of the Prelude with the melodic focus of Castle Vein to pretty successful results I feel. Had some trouble with the main melody here but I really like how it became a balance of epic and ambiguous. Fits the feeling of the fight and contrasts well with Clair de Lune's calm softness. This song actually has 3 layers of drums: the original MIDI drums, the amen breaks on top and the electronic drums that were added to give more weight to the original drum patterns and to make it feel more dynamic compared to the flat intensity that just the amen breaks by themselves gave the previous tracks. The guitars were cut up and occasionally stutter to try to get across the mechanical aspect of the boss. Because of all the layers, the song ended up really heavily compressed, which probably makes audio engineers and musicians cry, but at least for the layman it doesn't seem to bother them. *16:19**: Duel (Versus Reprise)* The "bass" intro is actually just the original guitar intro played at half speed. I had initially planned to actually record it on bass but just doing this way was much quicker and cleaner and it gets the job done. I had a lot of pressure going into this track since Versus is one of the more popular songs in the game, and it didn't help that I didn't have much time to write it since the update was coming out soon. Luckily I could still use the original song as the backbone, taking some riffs and sections and enhancing them with additional layers of melody and instrumentation that changed the way it felt while still staying recognisable. The initial idea was to have the synth solo climaxes not come in until the second phase of the boss fight, but since the first half is where players spend most of their time, it would have been a waste. Mixing wise this song is probably the loudest on the Act 2 soundtrack. I tried to mix it more in line with how the previous Greed songs are mixed, but it always ended up sounding wrong and weak, so I just kept it really loud and clipping, which gives it this meaty and thick sound. The original Versus was also more compressed than most of its surrounding songs, so that ended up being an accidental parallel. The drones at the start and end are done with an instrument called the Tanpura (or rather a soundfont of one). For some reason I always thought this kind of drone was done with a sitar, so I'm glad I found out.

Watching this after P - ranking the second layer feels great Also, since you are looking for more soundtracks, I would recommend you the Subnautica soundtrack. About the game: In Subnautica you play as a lone survivor of the crash of the ship Aurora from the Alterra corporation. It starts off slow with you collecting various materials and minerals in the shallow water, but as time goes on you are forced to explore deeper waters for blueprints from ship fragments and data from many alien laboratories. The deeper you go, the more dangerous (and the bigger) are the creatures that you will encounter. Thankfully you'll be able to navigate the murky water relatively safely in diverse ships. About the soundtrack: Most of the tracks are very ambient, and they differenciate from another like the biomes or scenes that they play in do. My personal recommendations are: -Abandon Ship -Leviathan -Red Alert -Salutations (Main menu, introduction) -Islands beneath the sea -Lost River The first three are more intense and the rest is ambient. I hope you'll see this and maybe even make a video to Subnautica, as part three of it is up and coming this year! PS: Love your vids! PPS: Yeah, I copied my last comment

I’m glad your still making videos on the music of ultrakill. It’s cause of your first video on ultrakills music I ended up getting the game myself and I’ve been enjoying it a lot. Thank you for making these videos on ultrakill.

Metal, classical and opera go hand in hand. I have a hard time believing guys like Bach and Mozart wouldn't love modern metal.

I do have to say I appreciate you making your own little twist/addition to the melody. Genuinely adds to both the feel of the music itself and the genuineness of the reactions.

The passage he was talking about in Altars of Apostasty at 1:41 is also very present in the game Hollow Knight as well. Specifically, it is the opener to the theme Sealed Vessel. I just thought that was very cool!

Last part of Altars of Apostaty is actually Castle Vein song from the other episodes but on a different style!
@spectre709511 ай бұрын
The final section of altars of apostasy may give u castle vein vibes. Thats cos its called “halls of sacrilegious remains” while the level castle vein plays in is called “halls of sacred remains” halls of sacred remains also has a boss at the end of it, while the room where halls of sacrilegious remains plays has u fighting 2 of those while enemies spawn when one of them dies Versus is the theme of V2, this games version of the “im u but better” trope. Duel is the theme of ur rematch against V2, and the very egyptian sounding drone ambience comes from the desert theme of the layer where the rematch happens (hell u literally slide down a pyramid while gunning each other its cathartic af) The vid for duel shows blurred gameplay of the fight as well
@thedevourerofgods168611 ай бұрын
its also neat how you hear Castlevein in 1-3, when you encounter your first Hideous Mass, and then you fight 2 of them later on again in 6-1 during the Halls of Sacrilegious Remains segment, which is a direct reference/callback to the earlier Castlevein theme (and ofc both of them are Castlevania references)

I might add before you hear "Versus" you are looking around for keys maybe 10 minutes or so with just "Clair de Lune" playing.

A prevalent theme in Ultrakill's music is the heavy use of Leitmotifs; the game puts a focus on callbacks to previous levels in the game; to show you how deep into the bowels of hell you've gone, as well as referencing connections to events in the game, or the story that plays out in the game's lore. Here's a list of all the leitmotifs present in the game so far: Order: Contains a leitmotif of Requiem, as well as a slight resemblance to Glory Duel (Versus reprise): Obviously contains a leitmotif of Versus Altars of Apostasy: Contains leitmotifs of Guts as well as Glory Hall of Sacreligious Remains (2nd half of Altars of Apostasy): Is essentially a remix of Castle Vein, which is the song name for the level: Halls of Sacred Remains War: Contains leitnotifs from Sands of Tide ---- Separated for potential future video ---- The World Looks Red: Contains a motif from Order Hear! The Siren Song Call of Death: Contains a motif from Death Odyssey War Without Reason: Contains a motif from Requiem.

YESSSS MORE ULTRAKILL!!! I will say, I love Alters of Apostasy, but there's something to be said for its proceeding track, Chord of the Crooked Saints, being an oppressive buildup to it, even if it's not musically interesting to hear one chord trailing on for over two minutes LOL Also love both Versus and its Reprise, they both have different vibes to offer and you nailed it when you said the reprise expands the original into something more cinematic, as the stakes have gotten higher. So happy you're enjoying this OST! It's changed my life.

I don’t think I would have considered this game without coming across your channel and hearing the music through your reactions. Thanks for sharing your expertise and thoughts, clearly the soundtrack is worth the price of admission.

Really love watching your reactions to different games' OSTs, love the deeper look we get thanks to your simplified analytical approach - no matter how many times I've listened to some songs, you always point out things I've never noticed before! If you decide to give some Ultrakill songs another listen, I'd totally recommend "Unstoppable Force", "Divine Intervention" and most definitely "Deep Blue"! Deep Blue features some really beautiful elements that aren't seen in other songs from the Ultrakill OST (as far as I know ^^)

The last part of altars of apostasy is a trowback to castle vein, the song for the level 1-3, which in itself is a reference to castlevania.

For the context Altars of Apostasy plays in 6th Layer of Hell: Heresy. And I find very interesting that all music in Heresy Layer is a classical music "corrupted" by metal (aka. Music Of Hell). That's truly the best description of heresy I hope to see more of Ultrakill OST reaction videos because this soundtrack is sick
@DeS_4H11 ай бұрын
I love your melody analysis, all about the feeling of music, and noticing the classical music similarities! I'd REALLY appreciate if you reacted to"It's time for your medicine" and "beyond reasoning" From Dead cells, this game is FULL of bangers

If you end up doing the more recent music, made for the 'violence' layer in the game, I hope to see you play along to some of it, because there are some very wonderful and very emotional guitar and violin melodies that I would love to hear you accompany with your strings!

I highly reccommend both "Hear! The Siren Song Call Of Death" and "War Without Reason", they're the 2 most recent additions to the game's soundtrack and are both amazing. Please give them a listen!

Love how you had the exact same reaction to Versus as i did.
@loltwest942311 ай бұрын
17:14 I remember the first time I was going through Greed (the Layer of Hell you fight in for this song). I had gotten through all the other three levels and suffered long and hard just to get to the final level of that Layer. I still had bad memories of dropping half an hour just to beat V2 (the robot fight in “Versus”) the first time round. I was going through the jump pads and corridors thinking “okay, just gotta get through this last level and I’m done” and wondering to myself “wait a second, why haven’t I encountered any enemies yet? This is odd.” By 17:20 when the doors open and I saw V2 again (sitting there and waiting for me) all I could think was “YOU AGAIN?!”
