EXO will never sound outdated for me, what they did a decade ago is still relevant in terms of sound, singing technique, imagery and even choreo. And the vocals!!! At 18-19 they sounded just as powerful and immaculate as today, not undermining their experience though.

Thank you for the reaction! I really appreciate his critiques of Chanyeol’s rapping especially because Chanyeol himself has said that he wanted to be a singer at first and SM gave him the rapping position instead. Given that, I think Chanyeol does well, but I loved that the critiques weren’t just him saying that Chanyeol can’t rap at all but rather things about his flow and delivery.

His critique of Chanyeol's rap is interesting to listen too. I want to hear that delivery change in Obsession in full to see how different the song would be. I also hope Chanyeol's will meet his expectations in one of the song someday lol For someone who was given the rapper position, he tries and I enjoyed a couple of his rap but I'm not a rapper. I don't notice the flaws.

Considering SM decides what will be published and therefore also how the idols sound I'm not sure if this is simply down to Chanyeol. After all they rehearse and do retakes: so whoever decides seems to like it or they likely would change it. Rapping styles differ as well and people don't necessarily agree with each other in what they like or consider good rapping... At least not based on all the arguments I've come across on the rap & hip hop side...

@@exomake_mehorololo Not so much for Chanyeol's solo music. With EXO I'm sure they go with what works best for the song but the producers aren't looking at it from a the rap perspective. That's no to say he's bad, it's just the delivery sometimes doesn't sound it's best. I think a better example would be his NNG channel where SM isn't controlling what's being put out and he has mq working with him.

There's no "flaws", it's just a matter of different perspectives. The guy prob has never heard a lot of kpop & as a rapper himself, just listen mostly to hiphop rap that originated from America. The thing is, the mindset that "real rapping only comes from american hiphop rapper" is pretty prevalent these days among music fans & even gp. So anything else from that isn't considered a "real" rap or good. What they don't consider is the fact that kpop songs just doesn't sound like western songs even if they're using the same genres as them. & that includes hiphop & rap. With EXO as a vocal based group & RnB Pop Ballad as their main genres, "american rap" isn't necessary to include in their songs. Bcus it may sound really weird & overall disconnected from the song. The changes he's talking about may make Chanyeol's flow & delivery better, but it doesn't necessarily compliment the whole song or make it that much better.

That's what I love ab EXO and Kai's songs - multilayers in music and vocals. There's always at least 5 layers in music and at least 2 in vocals.. it's their characteristic - mixing high and clear voices with lower and more textured. Like Chen's and Kai's together give it all - the range, the warmth, create more volume and emotion, and thus help to underline each other's individual voice color and 'temperature'. Love EXO for the whole range of outstanding voices and this multilayers-ness in everything. Kings 👑👑👑

The thing with many Korean rappers, in both kpop and k-hiphop: You don’t know where they go next. It’s not predictable and that’s why I love it. That said, SM Entertainment are not famous for their rappers, and even though they have gotten some good ones lately, vocals are their thing. Personally, Chanyeol’s rap in Obsession is one I really like, since they really let him go off there. Has he reacted to Stray Kids? Maze of Memories for example?

Fun fact: Growl was filmed in just one take. Chanyeol is one of many idols who wanted to be a singer but became a rapper because their company told them to. A lot of the time, a company will tell the rapper what kind of flow and delivery they want in order to match a song. Even with singers, companies will make idols change what comes naturally to them to fit the group or song style. In the future, I would love to know what he thinks about the way Minhyuk from BTOB raps.

I hadn’t thought about it that much, but I stop paying attention after the first part of the rap and I don’t tune back into the song until they get back to the hook. As you discovered, the performance version of EXO's "Growl" is a one take video, which means that it was shot all in one take without any cuts or edits. However, although it is a one take video, this does not mean they used the very first take, it just means that every time anyone made a mistake they had to start all over again from the very beginning. While filming the one take MV they had to dance the choreography about 7 times and this was the take the director and producer decided to use. They actually danced this choreography until they physically could not do it anymore. But, if you notice, not even this take was technically "perfect" because Kai drops the hat in the middle of the dance in the Korean version and he smoothly bends down and picks it up. He needed the hat at the end. But because it was done so effortlessly that most people don't even notice the mistake, or assume it's just part of the choreography, they decided to use this footage anyway. And if you watch the Mandarin version, if you look closely, you will see Suho steps on Sehun's foot. :D. In the beginning of the performance MV you start out by seeing 6 of the members and as the camera spins around you see the other 6 members -- There are 6 members that make up EXO-K and 6 members that make up EXO-M and when they come together they are 12 that make up one group as EXO. In the Korean version, you see the EXO-K (Korean) members featured first in the two groups. and if you watch the EXO-M (Mandarin Chinese) version, you will see the EXO-M members featured more prominently. In the beginning how EXO was designed was that for every member in EXO-K there is a member in EXO-M that fills the same role. Each member in EXO-K has a counterpart in EXO-M. For example, D.O. is the main vocalist in EXO-K and Chen is the main vocalist in EXO-M; Baekhyun is the other main vocalist in K and Luhan was the other main vocalist in M; Chanyeol is the main rapper in K and Kris was the main rapper in M; Sehun is the lead rapper in K and Xiumin is the lead rapper in M; Kai is the main dancer in K and Lay is the main dancer in M; and then it's Suho is a lead vocalist in K and Tao was a rapper/vocalist in M (I'm not sure how these two really work together because Tao is more of a rapper and Suho is a vocalist, but because they are the last two they are put together.) That's why it's worth watching both versions, because, as you will discover, there is far more than just the languages that are different. ;D However, what is even more impressive about "Growl", is the fact that they filmed 4 versions of the "Growl" MV, so not only did they have to perfect the dance in the Korean performance version, but they also had to do it again in the Mandarin version and then again in both the 2nd MV versions. And it wasn't like they could use the same footage because the Korean and Mandarin versions aren't exactly the same -- the EXO-M and EXO-K members had different parts in each of the MVs -- so that just adds another element to this. EXO actually filmed 5 different videos for the song "Growl." There is still one more video that was released as part of their "Wolf" and "Growl" promotions. It's a drama version that combines their two songs "Growl" and "Wolf" and it's like a mini K-drama that is more like a movie or TV show with a complete story and the members playing characters. Here is a link to the full "Growl" and "Wolf" drama version kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXemp42LiNOoq9U. Plus, there are several iconic live performances of "Growl" as well. If you notice, the camera movements are actually part of the choreography, because the camera is another character in the performance. The camera is supposed to represent the girl that they are singing to. So that is why they are looking at the camera so intensely because they are trying to get the girl's attention. They are each trying to impress her with their moves. If you pay attention to the lyrics for "Growl," you will see they are pretty much acting like a wolf or beast, that can no longer control themselves around the girl and they are warning her to be careful because all she does is make them want to growl and grab her and possess her, etc. "I’m warning you just in case (listen carefully) It’s dangerous now (so dangerous) Stop provoking me (there’s going to be trouble) I don’t even know myself ... My breath keeps on stopping You walk towards me You smile at me Maybe you’re attracted to me too .... A dark shadow has woken up inside of me Sparks fly in my eyes as I look at you Everyone step away from her (step away) It’s going to get fierce from now on I’m growling, growling, growling I’m growling, growling, growling I’m growling, growling, growling If you don’t back away then I don’t care if you get hurt ..." etc. Some say the "girl" that EXO is always singing about and you sometimes see in their MVs is a manifestation of the heart of the Tree of Life and that is why the members are always rescuing or protecting the girl, etc. And why all their songs are about being in love with a girl or being controlled by the power of the girl, such as in "Overdose" for example. Or how they talk about knowing they are bad news for the girl but they want her anyway and they can't help it, but in the end they know they might destroy her -- as they say in "Monster," etc. etc. When you think of the girl as the heart of the Tree of Life the mystery begins to unfold even more. EXO got so good at this choreography that they were able to perform the whole thing live on award shows and music programs just like they did in the MV while singing live as well. You should check out their Beauty and Beast performance at the 2013 MAMA Awards to see how impressive they perform "Growl" live. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5TUnZKKa6uWb8U "Growl" and this one take performance is what launched EXO into superstardom and it's what made them the most popular group in Korea. It's one of the reasons why the government has given EXO the title of Korea's national Idols. However, "Growl" came out in 2013 about a year after EXO debuted, and up until that point EXO weren't very well known or popular. When they first debuted, many people called them "SM's biggest mistake." Because the concept of them being aliens from Planet Exo and the fact that they were designed specifically to debut in both Korea and China and several foreign Chinese members were chosen specifically to make up their own sub-unit, etc. many people had a hard time understanding how EXO would ever be successful. The group started out being branded as SM's first failure, and they thought Lee SooMan (the founder of SM) was crazy for coming up with the group. But when the one take video for "Growl" was released, everyone began to take notice. This video was pretty groundbreaking, no group had done a one take video quite like this and it proved to the mainstream audiences that SM really did know what they were doing. Now everyone in Korea and around the world knows EXO and they have become one of the most popular groups that are one of the biggest money-makers for SM. "Growl" has become what they are most known for. EXO even performed this song at the closing ceremonies of the Winter Olympics in 2018.

Respectfully, I have to disagree with Chanyeol as the greatest rapper of 3rd generation Kpop. As much as I love EXO (my #1 favs) their current rap line is not as good as BTS' RM, Suga, and J-Hope. That being said, I don't feel there is a 3rd generation band that comes close to EXO's vocal power as a whole, though NCT comes close and I feel that is because they're also an SM group.

As someone who has never enjoyed particularly rap until kpop...i kinda love chanyeol rap in obsession. I don't finf it messy and out of place. If it kept going as the reactor said it would feel boring and predictable. It had a twist that i like a lot. But I'm no rap expert so idk

I mean it’s not a whole rap song exo are super rnb oriented chanyeol is more an in between singer/rapper that sort of melodic rap is to me better than including a « real » rap verse it would be out of place in that much of a pop/rnb song. It’s like any song kdot or Drake hop on, like the most commercial songs they hopped on as a feature had a total different vibe because you can’t hit a full hardcore verse while the song hasn’t that type of vibe. Now Idk if chanyeol has solo work/mixtape tho I’m not in the fandom but I really enjoy their work but I’m curious if he has and how he sounds. It would’ve been super cool if you showed him k hip hop actually since he is a rapper like some Gray, groovyroom chacha Malone productions I’m really curious to hear his opinion on both their productions and the artists rapping on the song they produced

Interesting. Enjoyed this, but I heard the line about wanting to hit a formula and it lost me. Why would you aim to always hit a formula? How would music surprise, innovate or move on? I'm not sure I understand that point. I'm not a musician though and I watch these reactions to hear new ideas.

I think what's interesting (and quite limiting it seems) is that he's placing Western convention (rules) onto things and being uncomfortable when they don't follow, which is fascinating to me. I think that's what makes kpop it's own thing. Major switch ups, changes, bridges, having songs PUSH through some of the static conventional sounds etc and what listeners are used to and can hear anywhere. I don't want 8 or 16 bars of the same flow or cadence. And I don't want to feel as though I know or can expect where each section of a piece is heading. Would seem a bit boring after a while. Additionally, when you take into account what works in a language that has POLAR opposite rules than English, can those Western-centric ideas be adhered to (and should they be?). I do find the perspectives interesting, I'm just surprised at how rigid creative minds can be. I appreciate the variety of guests to the channel though. Always gives much to ponder 💖

I think it’s only natural when the genre is new to people, especially when they’re utilising an art form so personal to black culture however I don’t know much about rap lol so yeah it probably would seem boring but perhaps it’s not done well more often than it is. I think he’s saying changes are fine but there’s the right way to do them maybe.

Kpop’s cultural hybridity is what makes it so shiny and appealing to the masses - true. But the culture it pulls from the most is black culture, so it’s not surprising he was very critical of that part. His critique further solidified the fact that rap in kpop isn’t even taken seriously and is used because it ✨sounds cool ✨. You stated “western conventions” but that is literally what makes up the DNA of kpop music lol. It is a mashup of different cultures put together locally and exported globally.

@@Koko3op I find it difficult to think there is 1 right and wrong way of rapping and flow. I'm listening to rap and hip hop since the 90s at this point and while I'm not pretending to be an expert ... I have seen people heavily disagreeing when it came to " good" and bad rapping, flow and delivery. Where some consider someone extremely good or and others think they're total trash. All people who think they know or understand their subject. There's as everywhere lots of opinions and tastes it seems. It can get quite heated 😆😆 Although I'm sure there is also just bad rapping...
@danaxol

@@Koko3op @MdotP 10 I don't think that the music theory is giving you the way you built up a song , it's the culture who "dictates" the construction of a song, and we all know that the majority of the listeners are looking exactly towards "western culture" , like, a song shall begin with verse-- pre chorus-- chorus-- verse-- pre chorus-- chorus(usually 2 times)-- bridge-- chorus , it's a pattern we all grew up with . I am myself born in the '70s and what fascinated me about the kpop is exactly the fact that they break the song in pieces and built it up again, using a different pattern, you can never guess what it comes next. The same thing happens with the tempo and the rap flow, we can't say, for example, that Chanyeol's rap is not good because he uses another tempo measure, let's not forget that his rap coach is korean, easely saying, another land , another "Music culture". Oh, and Chanyeol is first a singer, he learned to rap as a trainee. About the song writers in kpop , the funny thing is that, in SM case, they are 80% americans or europeans , but, it rarely happens that a song will be released exactly as the original demo, they have their own team who will "finalise", "polish" the song until the final version is done. It would be interesting to react to ( or break) songs that have the original demo to be found in KZbin (like "Call Me Baby ", demo title "Call Me Daddy"), you can observe the difference who makes the songs in kpop so unique. And, yes, CHEN sings those "Obsession " high notes easily live, another interesting comparison you can use in your future videos, studio vs. live version.

EXO's songs arent really meant to be hip hop rap if that's what he meant if he referance to JayZ. Chanyeol & Sehun's rap style fits the rnb/vocal based type of songs. Chanyeol's style is not the formulated which is nice to hear. But i also understand his constructive criticisms. EXO dont really follow the flow they make it. It be nice if you're not into kpop which is heavily rap/vocals based gets in a group like EXO because they blend it so well and easy to listen to.
