This might just be me, but A Glacier Eventually Farts to me sounds like you're in a vast, much larger place than you can comprehend (from the chimes), yet it feels claustrophobic, terrifying (from the intensity). This description also really fits the environment that the music is played in, where you are exploring the void, as infinitely deep as it seems when you look off the edge of the island that you arrived at, but you are forced to defend yourself against heavy hordes of difficult enemies inside of tiny little bubbles of safety to avoid the void destroying you. The music to me perfectly captures the feeling of being very small.

Thank you SO much for reacting to my favorite song “A Glacier Eventually Farts (And Don’t You Listen to the Song of Life). You’re SPOT ON about the ancient recording comment. This song plays in The Void which exists at the end of time and is home to The Voidling, an eldritch being that moves through time with the intent to archive everything. Once you get to The Void, there comes a point where you can’t return to the normal levels. The only way out is forward and *SPOILER* even then your journey ends with the status “Unknown.” The first sentence perfectly describes not only the main setting of RoR2- Petrichor V, but also The Void, “Nature here is violent- base.” Thank you again. A Glacier Eventually Farts is a song that brings to mind a certain eldritch horror in my mind. I use it as inspiration for a version of Hell in one of my favorite fantasy settings. The monologue is what carries it mostly for me, with the idea of a landscape foreign, but full of predation, things that attack and choke out everything else for the simple cause of survival. It’s brutal, but in its own flow of constant conflict.

Your instinct at the end of Terra Pluviam is so incredibly spot-on! The little synth melody right at the end is a direct reference to a track from a game called The Dig, a sci-fi adventure game from 1995. Chris speaks to this in his album commentary video, he says that it was a very influential soundtrack to him and he wanted to pay homage to it in some way, so for this he took the opening track "Mission to the Asteroid" and just rearranged it to fit the sound of Risk of Rain.

I remember your comment from your previous video about enjoying having the situation of the song played put for you by people who've gone through the game, and I will try. The song plays during the final boss fight of the main game, Mithrix. A battle at the top of an abstract spire of the moon of the planet you'vr been fighting through to survive. The two heavier parts of the song, switching between prog rock and the more stretched out "half times" you described are phase 1 and phase 3, where Mithrix is taking you head on, once by himself, and then with his creations of stone and fire coming down from the sky to support their creator.. The middle section of the song where everything becomes muffled for a moment before resuming, sounding almost seperate from the rest of the song, and that is because it carries hints his Brother's theme, the final boss of the first risk of rain. And this chooses to play during the "add" phase, the second phase of the fight where Mithrix takes a break while you fight a spawn wave of his constructs before phase 3 comes. And the end of the song, where it becomes quiet, almost pathetic, the sound trudging along. This plays during the last stand of Mithrix, beaten, weakened to the point he can no longer fight you with his hammer, no long do so much as run, only walk. He creates a vortex, absorbing the items that gave you the power to bring him this low, and he begins to walk at you, raising his undamaged left arm to fire projectiles at you, only using his injured right to punch the ground, creating a cascade of energy balls that roll across the floor, which at this point drains his broken body to the extent it actually damages him. But as he is, he'd pulled out his trump card on us too late, and for as much as he taunts us for being weak without our items, he is too weak now to win even with the power they provide, and falls by our hand.

I really really hope you check out Risk of Rain 1/Returns OST (same ost but Returns has 4 extra songs) because there are a LOT of leitmotifs shared between tracks and they add so much to their vibes "You're Gonna Need A Bigger Ukelele" takes melodies from "Double Fucking Rainbow" (Yes, actual name) due to the connection between the two bosses, and both being the Final Boss theme Also, hope you eventually get to the Survivors of the Void DLC soundtrack, because Chris Christodoulou manages to go *even harder* in the OST for that than he did with the base game's OST ALSO also, to add on a little more. Really love your note about how YGNABU has a melancholy feel to it, since that's exactly what it's going for (as well as most of the OST to be honest.) This track in particular plays when fighting the main final boss, Mithrix, who is the brother to Providence. Your notes about the track also being "sturdy" and "highly order/freely flowing" also fit quite well. Mithrix's entire shtick is order, he creates things for mechanical purpose, neglecting to give them soul as that brings chaos into their purpose. His brother, Providence, however, loved life, and didn't care much for order. Eventually, they get into a dispute, and Provi banishes Mithrix to the moon, where he is trapped with nothing but moon rock, ala his title "King of Nothing". This is the melancholy vibe of his track. He has been sent away, rejected by his brother, and now, all he can do is make lifeless lunar chimeras in an attempt to create an army, building up his sorrow and rage to hopefully enact revenge on his brother. I can't describe it all well-enough in a single comment, but if you wanna learn a bit more about it, the video titled "The Tragic Lore of Risk of Rain" by Astro is a great video that looks over the lore of the game, and may give a lot more insight into the vibes of the music I could talk so so much about this game but I'm gonna end up writing a massive comment if I try and do that, but one more "little" note The speech in A Glacier Eventually Farts is (obviously) not heard in-game, but it's taken from the 1982 documentary "Burden of Dreams" and is narrated by Werner Herzog. The track plays in the Void Fields, which is intended to be an ocean-like environment in a dark void, and the whole area is covered in a toxic fog, except for little vent cells that you have to open up to clear the fog. The narration is seemingly meant to represent the toxic and hateful environment of the Void in the Risk of Rain universe, and how the Void Reavers act as essentially space police to capture and secure beings of anomalous or intense power Okay ONE last edit! I am so sorry for the massive comment I just love this game so much and have So Many thoughts Your note about how Terra Pluviam sounds like someone screaming/wailing is PERFECT for one of the two stages it plays in, the Abyssal Depths, a very hellish stage that's the home of the Imps and is a very ruthless environment. The log for the Abyssal Depths is even just an audio transcript of a team landing there, and then panicking due to just how hostile of an environment it is. I'm honestly amazed at just how good you are at getting these vibes from the music, though I suppose that's partially thanks to Chris's masterful composing as well. Absolutely love this series so so much because of that

What I love about Chris Christodoulou's work is that not just the drums are live, but MAJORITY of the instruments are actually live instruments. Someone can correct me if im wrong, but in his composer's reaction note series where he talked about the process of making the Risk of Rain 2 soundtrack, he talked about how he recorded a pretty good amount of live instruments at home or in a studio and them put some editing on and some mixers over.

The speech during "A Glacier Eventually Farts" is from Werner Herzog, talking about the making of Fitzcarraldo. Also, the track plays (notably, without the speech) in an area known as the "Void Fields", where a certain group of enemies come from/trap things

I think my favourite song would have to be "the dehydration of risk of rain 2", both because of the actual song itself and the play on words. God I love Chris Christodoulou

The sudden switches in style are because We need a bigger ukelele is played over the endgame boss fight, with the different phases of the music matching with the mood and stress level of the bosses' current attacks.
