Kanami (lead guitar) in the section you're talking about is a section called "tapping". She has her pick tucked between her thumb and index finger to keep it out of the way until she needs it again (Misa, the Bassist does this as well) She is tapping the strings with her middle finger and it gives it a kind of electronic sound. Yes, she is also a classically trained pianist and that comes through more in her composition. There is also a lead singer, she's on a break for this song to rest her voice, this was a 23 song set. The go to recommendation on more Band Maid to get a real feel for the full band is Domination (Official Live) from their channel

The technique that Kanami is using in the 'feature' is tapping, so she's tapping the strings with the fingers of her right hand (the pick is tucked away, not used) with hammer ons and pull offs with her left hand. This technique is probably most well known from Eddie Van Halen in the 80's but it is older than that. As far as guitar is concerned it was occassionally used in the 50's and 60's by some jazz guitarists

Kanami (Lead guitar) is taping. She started piano at age 3. She writes the songs. Saiki (singer) is taking a break. MISA (Bass) uses a pick until she "flips the pick" under her index finger and slaps. attended music school with Akane (drummer) Happiest drummer you will find. She made you smile during her solo. We saw it. And finally, Miku. SHE MADE THIS! She started the band and didn't play an instrument. She put the band together and Kanami taught her how to play. She writes the lyrics. Try Dice MV or Manners. Freedom Live or Domination live. Strap in buddy. It's a hell of a ride.

Band Maid is awesome! They usually sing, but they do have a handful of instrumentals as well. From what I've seen/heard Kanami 'taps' with her middle finger. She's holding her pick while she's doing this as well MISA (bassist) also figured a way to hold her pick while she 'slaps' the bass. These girls are god level talent 🙂
@greylocke100
@greylocke100 Жыл бұрын
Yes Kanami will hold the pick when she taps, for the most part, on their newest she puts it in her mouth for some of the song, but for here she just holds on to it and taps with her middle and ring finger while doing hammer ons and pull offs with her left. MISA, will tuck the pick with her index finger and then use her middle finger to "Claw Pluck" and "Snap and Pop" in addition to "Slapping" with her thumb.

They actually have two singers, but this is an instrumental piece. They have a handful of these that give the main singer a break, because their shows in Japan tend to be around 2 hours and 20+ songs. Kanami the guitarist does have piano experience but I do not know her level of proficiency. Misa the bassist does play with a pick, but she palms her pick to switch to slap when she needs to. It's pretty cool to see. The secondary guitarist seen in this performance is Miku, who has a few where she sings but generally does backup vocal work. One fun fact about Miku is that she couldn't play the guitar when she founded the band and was taught how by Kanami. Great reaction, man; thanks for checking them out.

Great reaction dude. In my opinion, BAND MAID is the best rock band in the world today. Personally I think they are the TOP 10 best in history. They have no rival. Nothing yet. They have about 140 songs and there is a kind of competition among the fans to see who can find a bad song. They create everything and manage everything they do. Keep up with them because they are the Holy Grail of Rock and you will see it soon. In MV they are incredible but live they blow the heads of the audience and/or music press. Keep going as you have no idea what is in front of you. Choose any song from them. Easy...and be ready for the arrival of BAND MAID Army called MAIDIACS. The MAIDIACS are the most tolerant, kind, easy and warm Army Fans in the music horizon. Again, you have no idea and pick any song. Yes any song. And be ready for the singer (Saiki) who is as 'monster' as the others. Thanks

It is impossible for any single band to have the musical impact the all time greats from decades ago had. You’re talking half a century ago. But if you’re just talking about who makes music that will stand the test of time and who’s the best at it in modern music, I don’t know who compares to them right now. Kanami is one of three members of the band who were trained as classical pianists (Besides guitar and keyboards, she also can play three other instruments at a professional level). She is also the band's chief composer. (She also has a degree in Economics from the University of Tokyo, just in case things go bad). She also taught the band's founder, Miku, to play rhythm guitar (she literally brought Miku from the level of a non-player to that of a respected professional, all in Kanami's non-existent "free time").

So, I've spent the last 87 minutes doing research on the Net. Nothing -- apparently education is of no importance. My two favorite bits of information from this search: (a) a Band Maid biography that contained the valuable information: "Band's Country of Origin: Unknown"; a Band Maid biography that noted: "Misa's REAL NAME is: Misa". Two realizations that I had during this search: (a) my mastery of Spanish and German has deteriorated even more than I realized; (b) I still can't read Aramaic, Urdu, Farsi, Japanese, Chinese, Tagalog, Portuguese or Russian. The guitar technique she used is called " tapping " which was made famous by Eddie Van Halen. The bass player is using a pick most of the time but cleverly tucks the pick away and uses her thumb to effect the "slap bass" technique with "pull offs" technique without missing a beat. Technically this is a master class which separates them from the crowd - they are literally crushing the competition . They normally have vocals with a fifth member but this one is one of their "instrumentals" with just 4 members performing. .

In 2017, their excellent singer, Saiki, had surgery to remove polyps from her vocal chords. In concert, the band provides several forms of breaks for her, including some instrumentals (the singer's voice is fine -- this is just "preventive maintenance") [their concerts commonly run to 21-28 songs]. As with all of their materials, the instrumentals are not "filler" -- they receive the band's full attention

Thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. They have recently completed their 2022 US tour (13 concerts + appearance of huge rock festival "Aftershock" in Sacramento). We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.) Uh-oh, we also say "Japan is the country obsessed by Jazz". It had started earlier than rock 😄

THE best Rock band in existence. Try their last release, which is an instrumental too, From Now On ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2e9hKmjo9CGZpI ) which makes this look easy for them now. Although they only have 5 instrumentals in total, the other 100+ songs have the superb, powerful, emotive and very flexible vocal power of Saiki's voice in them. She gets to show it off - moving through 3 octaves smoothly, for example - in the live performance of 'Wonderland' ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/rmXLqX-bfcekkNE ). 6:00 - The technique Kanami is using on the lead guitar is known as tapping, when the left and right hands are using 'hammer-ons' and 'pull-offs' on different parts of the fretboard, in counterpoint to each other. She is the one who composes Band-Maid's songs and her layering of instruments and vocals and intricate compositions are one of the reasons why, when Tony Visconti went to see them in concert a few weeks ago in the USA, caused him to say that they "are one of the best bands I've ever seen", which coming from the man who produced just about every Bowie album is quite the compliment - and completely accurate. Concentrate on any one instrument to hear the intricacy of the composition - and hear the whole to, um, hear the intricacy of the composition!

In the category of songs that some prefer in the MV rather than the live versions, I would add "Blooming", which is a hard driving rock song but has some "singing angels" near the end, and though they play the hard rock part wonderfully live, the angel voices work better on the studio recording. @@myeckwaters The rest of the information file; Band Maid was started in 2013 by Miku Kobato. At the time she had just left the Idol Group, Lil Cumin and she didn't like the type of music she had been performing. She approached her management agency with the idea of making an actual band playing rock music but dressed as maids. She had worked in a Maid Cafe and thought the image of maids playing rockin music would create what she called "The Gap" between what you see and what you hear. The Management company was like Ok, go ahead. Miku then looked around and found Kanami a singer/songwriter who was posting her own videos on the internet. Miku had her agency contact her and Kanami thought the idea was cool and agreed to join. Miku then asked if Kanami knew a drummer who might be interested. Kanami had worked with Akane in the past and there is 2 versions of this, the first is, Kanami literally walked over to Akane's apartment and asked her, the second is Kanami called Akane and asked her. (Akane has said in 2 different interviews that 1: Kanami called her and asked if she could come over and 2: in a second interview Kanami just came over) Akane was actually hesitant as she had worked in an "All Girl Group" before and didn't enjoy it as it wasn't the type of music she wanted to play. After hearing a Demo, Akane was like ok, but was still slightly hesitant because of the "Maid Outfits", but she agreed to give it a try. Akane was asked if she knew a bass player and she had gone to Tokyo School of Music with MISA and had worked a couple of jobs with her. So Misa was contacted and after she heard a demo she was like I like the music, but she also was hesitant about the "Maid Outfits", but she relented and joined in as she really wanted to play the kind of music she heard in the demo. The 3 of them then "Auditioned" for the record company and passed the audition. Now we have the "Core" members. The 4 members worked out some songs provided for them by the record company, and a setlist and they had performed 3 times with just Miku on main vocals. Miku after those performances felt that her voice wasn't powerful enough to really perform the songs she wanted. So she approached her management company again and asked if they had any singers who weren't in other projects. They then auditioned several singers. Miku heard Saiki rehearsing in a room across the hall and asked if she could be auditioned, the record company then had Saiki audition. Saiki was signed to the same management company and had done some work as a backup singer and dancer and was asked if she would be interested in auditioning for this new group which currently had 4 members and she would be the fifth. She had been a member of a group with 8 other people as a backup singer and dancer, and HATED it. So she listened to the demo and thought "Cool" because she liked the music. Now we come to the tricky part. Miku KNEW that if Saiki was told about the "Maid Outfits" she would say NO WAY!, so they didn't tell her. They told her they would have "Cool/cute Clothes"(I've read it translated either way), and she never met Miku until a few days before they had a contracted performance. She wasn't told about the "Maid Outfits" until the day before the performance, and she had considered backing out, but she had signed the contract. (Saiki also had NEVER met Miku until then as well) So the Ladies, went and did the performance and Saiki really, REALLY liked the crowds reaction and the music they were performing. She DIDN'T like the apron she wore so it got ditched after the first performance. And you now have the beginnings of the BEST LIVE HARD ROCK BAND in the WORLD! ALL HAIL BAND MAID!!!!! Now that we have the Full band, it was felt that there needed to be a second guitar. Saiki was like, "Not Me, No Way." So Miku said, "I'll do it.", at first that was literally all she did, was hold the guitar and mime playing it, until Akane said, if you are going to hold it, you NEED to learn to play it. And Miku said, "Ok.", and Kanami started to teach Miku how to play. The Ladies released their first album in 2014 "Maid in Japan" which failed to chart, but later after "Thrill" it was reissued and charted to #26 in Japan. Then in 2015 they released "New Beginning" On New Beginning was the song that changed Band Maid's entire existence. "Thrill"... The band was getting ready to release their first music video and the choice was between "Love, Passion, Matador" and "Thrill" and the ladies chose Thrill. (Little known fact, Miku helped with the lyrics on Thrill but did not get credited) This became the seminal moment of Band Maid. Because their second album charted at #64, the record company was seriously considering disbanding the Ladies and switching them to other projects. (In fact they had Kanami and Akane work with Mochi to Cheese thinking that when Band Maid cratered they could use them in another band. MISA had also just started working with Mochi to Cheese as well). However about 6 months after the video's release, a Facebook page "JRock Radio" posted the video to their timeline. And the video went viral. Having over a million views in just a few short weeks. The Ladies Twitter page got so many hits they thought their page had been hacked. Their KZbin channel also started getting more and more subscribers and views to Thrill. Now the ladies knew where their fans wanted them to go. Harder Rock, less pop. And history was Maid. That's all for now.

Both the guitarist and bassist use a combodation of using a pick and their fingers to play. The major difference is the bassist generally doesn't use her right hand to create pitches like the guitarist was. The bassist will use her pick to create a more driven aggressive sound but then tuck the pick into the crook of her index finger and use the joint of her right thumb knuckle to strike the sting like the hammer in a piano and also use her middle and ring finger to pull strings away from the body of the bass and release it to give it a poping, percusive sound. The technique is called "slap-pop" and was made popular in 70's funk bassists like Lary Grham from the group Sly And The Family Stone. Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers is a more modern user of slap pop. The guitarist, as many people here have said, is actually playing notes by forcefully bringing the fingers down on the string, hard enough to make them vibrate and produce a pitch, and then quickly pulling them off. The string will continue to vibrate and play the highest pitch on the string she is tapping. This can allow a guitarist to literally play one handed notes using "Hammer on" and "pull off" techniques with their left hand. Then she uses the same tequnique with her right hand and it allows her to play low and high notes very quickly by combining the two methods. These two techniques go back to at least the 60's but became widely used in rock music in the 70's and 80's allowing guitarists to play percussive, precise notes in very quick succession.

Here's my intro blurb for those who may be new to Band-Maid: BAND-MAID’s songs and sound beat with the heart and soul of all rockers. But you’ll also hear heavy influences of Prog, Punk, Metal and Pop, with nice touches of Blues, Jazz, Funk and Grunge. Sometimes they use multiple genres within the same song. Their Composition, Execution, Joy of Playing, Consistency (124 songs), Uniqueness, Charisma, Charm and, oh yeah, Cuteness factor, position them as becoming the hard rock Beatles of our time! In other words, they’re destined for mega-stardom. Each member's personalities are super interesting and their musicianship among the best. Their writing, arrangements and overall sound, especially guitar tones and drums, are kick-ass! Having seen them LIVE, I can honestly say their performance, sound, stage appearance, and band synergy is off-the-rails spectacular! Band-Maid is the only band in decades where I love nearly EVERY song they’ve done. I have over 70 favorites! "Thrill" (2014) is a great place to start: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5XWaJppgpJnorM Their songs from albums Unleash, Unseen World, Conqueror, World Domination, Just Bring It, Brand New Maid, and New Beginning drive even more - Warning, No God, Different, Black Hole, Rinne, Blooming, Moratorium, Domination, Clang, Dice, Spirit, Don’t You Tell Me, Turn Me On, Fate, Play, Hide-And-Seek, Secret My Lips, Puzzle, Choose Me, I Can’t Live Without You, and on and on. But don’t miss out on their powerful, beautifully written, mid-tempo songs like Daydreaming, About Us, Anemone, Endless Story, PAGE, At The Drop Of A Hat, Mirage and Smile... or more punky like After Life, Don’t Let Me Down and Screaming… or funky like Bubble… or bluesy like Manners and The Dragon Cries… or poppy like Start Over… or a bit jazzy like Wonderland… or progressive like No God, Giovanni, and Black Hole… or cultural like the Band-Maiko series… or instrumentals like From Now On, Don’t Be Long, Onset, Without Holding Back and Going Nuts… or their many acoustic versions like Catharsis and Sayonakidori... and last but not least, their Anime hits like Sense, Glory and Unleash (from their own Anime MV (series?)): kzbin.info/www/bejne/bX2lkHiGiJlrfqc) And many songs are represented with over 40 well produced music videos. kzbin.info Most performances should be experienced from their LIVE audience & online OKYU-JI concerts:  ONLINE OKYU-JI (Feb. 11, 2021) “No God” kzbin.info/www/bejne/pHLHiKF_h896l80  Tokyo's LINE CUBE SHIBUYA (February 14, 2020) “Domination” kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k  ZEPP 2018 “Real Existence” kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6K0n35_gbdoq5I  Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 (Full concerts from the last two songs are on bandmaidprime.tokyo and DVD/BD/CD) And some of the better quality 2022 US tour Fan vids are excellent. Here’s one of what it’s like to see Band-Maid LIVE at an intimate venue:  By Wave Potter with their last 2022 US tour OKYU-JI concert in Chicago: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGqllHmtj99mmcU If you like Band-Maid, make sure to support them by purchasing some concert tickets, CD, DVD/BD & Merch, etc. bandmaid.tokyo Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. I'll go back and see an older song like YOLO, Order, Shake That, Freezer, Before Yesterday, Real Existence, Non Fiction Days and Alone, etc. and realize there's no band that can consistently construct and play like Band-Maid. For fun, check out an awesome, little known "Mega Band-Maid Mix" by DJ Ray of some of their earlier stuff: facebook.com/djrayboston/videos/1004709499579009 Band-Maid Members: Saiki Atsumi (Sy-i-Key or Psyche) “Ice Queen" - Lead vocals, arrangements and melodies. At 28 and the youngest, “Sensei” (Teacher) as band members call her, has the last word on many musical decisions. High-heels or sneakers, Sai-chan’s smile melts away her sometimes perceived, coldish persona. Saiki’s powerhouse performances, charisma, and voice focus the experience that’s driven her to the top echelon of hard rock frontwomen... or frontmen! Miku Kobato (Me-Ku) "Small Pigeon" - Rhythm guitar, vocals, lyricist, 31 years old. “Koba”, as Saiki calls her, is the Band founder and a firecracker MC & PR SpokesPigeon, po! Her “Magic Spell Time” charm and energy ignite the room. Kuruppo! No, no, no… KURUPPO!! Kanami Tono (Ka-Na-Me) “Princess” - Lead guitar, keyboards, 31 years old, is a prolific writer of most Band-Maid material. Kanami (translates “Song Wave”) is a possessed riff-slayer who’s so damn adorable it hurts. The only thing you want from Mincho is more! Akane Hirose (A-Ka-Nay) "Gorilla" - Drums, 32 years old, band energizer & co-clown with MISA. Achi’s talents include massive consumption of noodles and bananas, of course, (even during performance!) while revolutionizing rock drumming with relentless drive, dynamics and the kick. This “DrumZilla” is the Party! MISA (Me-Sa) "Barefoot Assassin" - Bass, 30 years old. An alluring free spirit driving her 5-string to rapturous low-ends while pulling off surprising counter leads with Kanami, off-stage MISA is the band’s goofball ballerina. Sometimes seen as the Mysterious One because she lets her instrument do the talking, the Assassin literally kills it… every note... uniting Band-Maid’s world-class rhythm section. A slug of JB, a slight grin, and let the slappin’ begin… MISA! MISA! MISA! Maidiacs (Maid-e-acts) - Band-Maid’s crazed yet supportive, knowledgeable and loyal Super Fans. [BAND-MAID NEWS]  BAND-MAID PRIME - Special Video Distribution Website. Along with nearly 50 great play-through’s by each member, concerts and skits, Band-Maid management / label(s) have included the ZEPP 2018 and Shinkiba Studio Coast 2017 concerts! Fans can now see more than 50 great live performances with awesome audio, etc. like Fate, I Can't Live Without You and the great MISA / Kanami exchange in Don't You Tell Me. Those concerts are two of the best produced & performed concerts ever recorded, IMO. bandmaidprime.tokyo  The Maids SOLD OUT 2022 US tour just wrapped up and was a fantastic success. And so many great live fancams to watch! Their playing and antics were as fresh and fun to experience from first show to last. BRAVO Band-Maid!!!!!

Oh my gosh, you have opened the floodgates. They may be the best rock group in the world today (I think they are). They are certainly the most creative. You are going to get a lot of suggestions. Here are a bunch that are official or unlikely to come down. First, a little background on the girls: Saiki Atsumi - Lead vocals Born Feb 8, 1994 28 years old MISA - Bass Born Oct 15, 1992 30 years old Kanami Tono - Lead guitar Composer and main arranger Born Sept 28, 1991 31 years old Miku Kobato - Rhythm guitar, backing vocal Born Oct 21, 1991 31 years old Akane Hirose - Drums Born Dec 14, 1990 32 years old Miku was working in a Maid Café after being in an idol group that didn’t break through. She envisoned the idea of a maid-band that plays hard rock and metal. She recruited Kanami, after finding a Kanami guitar cover on line; Kanami then recruited Akane, who recruited MISA. Akane and MISA had been students together at the Tokyo Music Academy. The group decided they needed more vocal “oomph”, and collectively recruited Saiki. Miku didn't know how to play guitar when they started, so Kanami has been teaching her. She's become good so fast that she is really adding to the music mix, and Maidiacs are daring to dream of a dual solo. They are that rare band that sound perfect live, even better than in the studio. You just saw one of their instrumentals--here are songs with vocals: Freedom (Feb 14 2020) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHnTpningqaWesk Domination (Feb 14 2020) kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5PcgnaAo5ulj8k Choose Me (Feb 14 2020) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpTUmqeYjcycnbc And an official MV: Daydreaming (slower ballad, gorgeous): kzbin.info/www/bejne/iHTEloihp66nr7s If you want more background, I suggest you react to this classic interview. It's hilarious, it's insightful, you will learn their names for good, and their cuteness will destroy your brain. Oh, and they are completely nuts. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iGWzoJmphr6qpJY

Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band. Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer when she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for the hard rock she wanted to play. Learned to play guitar after the band was founded to beef up the rythym section. Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. Onstage, she plays a savant guitar player with a room temperature IQ and a massive crush on Saiki. In reality she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors from the University of Tokyo. Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. Almost always smiling. A cheerful jock with a huge appetite. Snacks on-stage between numbers. MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Stone faced, barely acknowledges the audience. Always has a bottle of beer or bourbon on her amp. Rejected the maid aesthetic for a more goth look. That's just the way the assassin rolls. Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Mistress of Ceremonies, fashionista, and train nerd. In total control on-stage, hides behind Miku off stage.

Kanami uses a technique called "finger tapping." This was widely used by Eddie Van Halen, one of her guitar gods. MISA uses pick, pluck and slap on the bass. On Set is one of the few instrumentals, so you have a wide variety of songs featuring Saiki and Miku on vocals.

It's called Tapping😁Both MISA (B) and Kanami(LG) use hybrid (right) hand interaction, they "tuck" their picks or just pick and slap/tap and can use Pick, Slap, Tapp, Sweep and everything else all at the same time ... within a millisecond or so ... Very very nice reaction Shawka. BAND-MAID does instrumentals to give the lead singer a break in the middle of a show. Kanami is "tapping" and not plucking at that point. The pick is between her thumb and forefinger for use immediately after the tapping. You have witnessed my favorite Rock band ever and I go back to the sixties. They have a brand new instrumental that just dropped called FROM NOW ON. Very bombastic indeed. Or try DOMINATION-LIVE for the quintessential BAND-MAID with vocals. Thanks Karnoff and Shawka for the react. Peace. 2.41

Lead guitar Kanami Tono composes on piano. She took lessons as a toddler. Both she and Band-Maid's bassist, Misa seem to be able to transition from pick to fingers at will. Misa will hold her pick between her knuckles while strumming and slapping.

Vocalist Saiki is taking a break and is usually a powerful presence on stage. Kanami lead guitar techniques... left hand hammer-on and pull-offs, when right hand not using the pick she is tapping the strings. Bassist Misa playing both with a pick and plucking/slapping when the pick is tucked away to her palm with a finger. These are all known electric guitar and bass techniques... Band Maid is just very, very good at using them in their compositions consistently. Miku on rhythm guitar also does vocals and writes the majority of lyrics. Akane is a gifted drummer showcased more in other songs. Great start, thanks.

It's correct in a way, she (Kanami) use both hands to play, she tabs with the right hand, but also playes chores with her left at the same time.. She is insane talented, and also the mentor to Miku, who is the rythme guitar, and didn't know how to play guitar when they started about 9 years ago.. Then U have Misa, the goddess of bass, and also known as the barefoot assassin.. In the solo, if U notice she starts with a pick, then goes to fingers and back to pick, she hides the pick up her palm with one of the fingers.. Then U have the drummer Akane she too is brilliant and amazing at the drums.. this was one of her ehmm more easy ones 🤘😎

They are a rock band, but they have musical diversity closer to Queen than their modern contemporaries. They a wide range of rock, metal, punk, with strong pop sensibilities in the vocals, meaning they make songs the crowd can sing in part along to, which makes their live performances all the better. They can go from this to pop-punk to thrash metal to a Blue Oyster Cult 70’s rock sound to a Alt-rock to pop-rock, to latin fusion rock like carlos santana. Sometimes changing up the song entirely at the bridge. If you can consider a prog song to be prog in under 4 1/2 minutes, then they’ve done it. Last year after over a decade of cynicism towards new music and simply giving up on music after years of apathy and hopelessness, they made me love music again. And all the new bands I’ve been enjoying are because of them, but none of them come close. They’re the best band this century imho and the all the bands I would say in the same ballpark had at least half of their best work before 2001. Check out Domination LIVE. While it’s closer to their 20-25th best song to me, it gives an idea of their stage presence. Unfortunately the newer live songs on their yt page are from their online only concert, so you don’t get the crowd energy and a real sense of the live experience, but Domination and Play are actual live videos. On their yt channel I also highly suggest Warning MV, DICE MV and Blooming MV. Those are some of their most fun instrumentation on their channel (unfortunately a fair bit of my favorites are not on their yt page as music videos or live performances).

One of the lead guitar influence is Eddy Van Halen who used the “tapping” technique. That guitarist Al’s is a classically trained pianist and now writes most of the music The bass does use a pick but can instantly tuck it away and slap the strings. I fell in love with this group a couple years ago and thought they were way too good to be true. I flew down to Houston then a week later in New York to catch 2 concerts in the US tour this year. They are the real thing, supreme showmen, highly talented musicians, charming and enjoyable. As mentioned most of the songs have vocals, great harmonies but in live concerts they break with instrumentals and talking to give the lead vocalist a break. Big catalogue over a hundred numbers ranging many schools of music. I suggest live versions from their official Channel. Accessible numbers like Domination, freedom are easy. They have harder rock, elements of jazz. Very nice reaction. The girls can provide you with a musical education . P.S most of the acoustic numbers from last years acoustic concert for the fans are gone but I hope you get to hear one or two. You can’t fake talent playing naked acoustic.

Kanami is "tapping" on her guitar. She frets the string (setting the pitch) and sets it into vibration with the fingers of her right hand as you suggested. Tapping is used a lot by some jazz and rock guitarists. You can do it on any stringed instrument but usually on an electric guitar. Most good lead guitarists now days can use the technique but some are better than others. Kanami uses a lot of techniques to get the sound she wants for her composition (she's the songwriter). She usually uses tapping to get an electronic synthesized sound. And yep, she started on piano lessons when she was really little and didn't start guitar till high school. Check out their most recent instrumental, From Now On.

The finger-tapping style you noted Kanami is using is actually pretty common among hard rock and metal guitarists. Although he didn't create it, the style was popularized by Eddie Van Halen in the late 70s. Some, like Kanami, usually do one-finger tapping. Others, like Miyako from Lovebites do two-finger tapping, or like Midori from Lovebites do three-finger tapping! I'm not sure if I've ever seen anyone do four-finger tapping, though there may be some out there (and they're probably Japanese, lol)! Most of their songs have vocals. They actually have two vocalists, one of whom is the rhythm guitarist Miku (traditional maid costume, red rose on her bonnet), who serves as back-up and second lead vocalist. Saiki is the main lead singer, but she gets a break during this song. The Maids have four instrumental songs - "Onset," "From Now On," "Without Holding Back," and "Don't Be Long."

Onset could be a bumpy Band-Maid introduction for the uninitiated -- especially with no vocals. Domination (live), Freedom (live) and Thrill (MV) are the more-common gateway drugs (like Ghost Love Score for Nightwish). I suggest "Manners / Black Hole" double feature which starts with the "mellow" vaguely bluesy Manners where the complexity is more subtle, and Black Hole is its overwhelming brain-twisting opposite, both with kick-ass bass parts, and great lighting, which take many listens to unpack. Besides the guitar techniques you saw and people explained, all three of them also do finger picking at times (i.e. Dawn Winery Theme aka Greensleeves, occasionally on acoustic guitars. Haven't heard rhythm guitarist Miku (who also does superb vocal harmonies) do hammer-ons, tapping, and intricate solos, but she's learning fast. Saiki (pronounced kinda like psyche) their lead vocalist is also another pianist. I believe they all sing harmonies from time to time. The not-live version of Thrill was my introduction, which rekindled an intense joy from coming of age in the '70's, and which I had given up on happening again. I'm not the only one. It's important history as the viral video which saved the band from the record company's axe, and simpler than what they compose themselves these days. From Now On, their latest instrumental MV, is both intensely hard-driving and is a compositional emotional journey despite having no lyrics, and fun lighting! I still hold my breath through a lot of it 🙂 Manners / Black Hole official kzbin.info/www/bejne/n5LJamekg7iFfac Dawn Winery Theme (instrumental only, 2x electric-guitar finger picking, very sweet) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqPUpJSFbqiZaK8 (audio is better using this link -- at 4:11 in the full Genshin 2022 concert than in the excerpt video going around which loses some quality in the second verse) Thrill, official MV kzbin.info/www/bejne/i5XWaJppgpJnorM

The "tapping" is called Hammering. It consist of hammer on and hammer off, playing harmonics, and no pick is used. She is sounding the notes by placing her finger on the fretboard by force. Using the right hand to do some hammer on/off often playing the harmonics. The Bassist is Slapping and plucking the strings, also not using a pick.

At the beginning you had me worried because the volume was too low but you corrected that issue and I was relieved lol!😅 You had me laughing when you were trying to figure out what Kanami was doing with the “tapping” parts. It’s been a technique for over 50 years but I know not everyone will have the same knowledge or background in music. This Band-Maid is probably best described as the Musician's ultimate band at present moment. For us normal human Maidiacs, Band-Maid sounds phenomenal and we really love everything they dish out. I notice however, that when a musician listens to them.... well.... it's like handing the newest device to a Gadget Geek - they go nuts trying to figure out said device and all that it can do. The technical aspects of their instrumentation drives many musicians to spend a *lot* of time dissecting them. Many have released covers of Band-Maid songs in order to show what they have learnt from their analysis of these songs. Add all of us up, and you have a very epic Band-Maid community. I love your analysis. I love how you want to learn more of what they do. It will not be long before you end up with a Maidiac infection, and becoming a well-known figure in this community (that's my prediction). We (or at least I) certainly look forward to it. 😊

Yes, Band Maid does vocals. In fact they have an outstanding lead vocalist, Saiki Atsumei. They usually have one or two instumentals during their concerts to give her voice to break. Saiki had some polyps that had to be removed from her vocal cords in the past. Yes, Kanami does have a piano background. She was a classical trained pianist before she switched to guitar. Kanami composes the group's music. Miku, the rhythm guitarist writes their lyrics. One of the best songs to see their vocal skills and audience appeal is "Domination", the official live video. The band also released another instrumental "From Now On" from their recently released Unleash EP. You should check it out. Their fans (including myself) call ourselves Maidiacs. After a failed Idol career, she decided to fuse the Maid look with hard rock, so in 2013 she started BAND-MAID. Miku found Kanami (lead guitarist) via KZbin. Kanami had a channel where she wrote her own songs and played the guitar. Kanami, in turn, knew Akane (drummer) from having her play the drums on some of her songs. Akane then got Misa (bassist) on board, who she knew from Music school. With this, they were 4. Miku was the lead singer, with Kanami on guitar, Akane on drums, and Misa on bass. They did one gig in 2013 as a 4 piece, but afterwords, Miku decided she didn't have the type of voice they wanted for a hard rock band, so they did auditions for a lead singer, which is how they picked up Saiki. Bonus fact: They didn't tell Saiki about the Maid outfits, instead telling her just that they would be wearing "some cute clothes". Miku was afraid Saiki wouldn't accept to join if she knew they were going to dress up in Maid outfits. Saiki later confirmed in an interview that if they had told her beforehand about the Maid outfits, she probably wouldn't have joined lol. Good thing they kept it a secret, cause she has an amazing voice. Saiki found out about the Maid outfits literally when she arrived to perform at their first gig as a 5 piece. When/if you react to a song with vocals and see Saiki, you'll notice her outfit isn't as "frilly" as the others.

its taping the strings.. ie Eddie Van H... Misa the bassist goes back and forth between Pick and slapping.. and yes the vocals are amazing... the instrumentals are to give Saiki-chans voice a break during the show....

This is one of their few instrumentals. The Guitarist is Tapping.... like Eddie Van Halen. You are music teacher and are unfamiliar with Tapping?? Tons of rock guitarists do it. This band is incredible. The more you hear, the more you will love. Another band you should check out is The Warning. They have many cross-over fans with Band-Maid. They are three sisters from Mexico that are a classic rock power trio.

Figure tapping, Hammer-Ons and Pull-Offs, Eddie Van Halen, Start of Wasted Years by iron Maiden. Steve Vai. I am sure she is doing it with both hands.

Kudos to the person of infinitely good taste who recommended this band and song. Though, maybe we should all be recommending songs with vocals/Saiki for first time BAND-MAID listeners. I've seen a lot of first time reactors recently who keep picking instrumentals and then wondering why/if there are any vocals. 🙃

Band Maid is so comfortable in writing instrumentals that is absolutely stunning. But they actually have two singers. Saiki is lead singer. And Miku is also doung vocals.

so you had some questions about how tapping works. basically the technique is advanced hammer-ons, you're hammering the string into the fret board so that's what causes it to vibrate, no plucking necessary, this allows you to play pitches using both hands, and it has a very cool timbre. If you wanted to see a masterclass in tapping I would recommend Van Halen - Eruption kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmrVXoGuqr6msMk

They have a great lead singer named Saiki. Rhythm guitarist Miku is also a great singer. During their shows, they usually play one instrumental and one or two songs where Miku sings lead so that Saiki can take a break and rest her voice. “Domination” or “Freedom” live are great places to go to hear their vocals. Kanami’s guitar technique you were commenting on is called two-handed tapping. It’s a technique popularized by Eddie Van Halen (although he likely picked it up from Harvey Mandel or Steve Hackett). It involves hammering the strings onto the frets with both hands, as you observed. Bassist MISA uses a pick, but she tucks it into the knuckle of her index finger for the slapping parts.

They have two excellent vocalists, Saiki and their rhythm guitar, Miku Kobato, also writes the bulk of their lyrics. Most of their music is hard rock, but they can cover many genre: soft rock, punk, prog, folk-metal, jazz, pop. And they do all of it flawlessly.

During concerts the band gives the lead singer (Saiki) a break and will often include an instrumental into the playlist along with a song where Miku (rhythm guitar and vocals) takes the lead. They will also often include a 10 to 15 minute 'magic spell' where Miku will take centre stage with audience participation, this sometimes followed with a song where Miku sings the lead.

This was written to give the singer, Saiki, a break. Lead guitar, Kanami, writes all their material and is a musical genius. This is an old song, their new stuff is much more complex. All the members of the band are talented off the scale .She, the drummer and the bass player are all classical piano trained.

Band Maid are incredible. Kanami is lead guitarist, song composer. Bassist is Misa. Drummer is Akane. Rythum guitarist , band creator is Miku. In this song Kanamis “Tapping” runs, act as a chorus. Tapping was a huge part of Eddie Van Halen. Kanamis pic, is tucked in. She is “ hammering “ on the strings with her right hand fingers, and “ pulling” off with her left hand fingers.

You caught the tapping by Kanami but I guess you didn't catch Misa (basist) was playing with a pick and then half a second later she hides the pick in her hands and start slapping the bass.

I'm sure fans of the band will suggest many songs for you to react to that feature Saiki, their lead vocalist. After you've fallen down that rabbit hole, I would like to see your reaction to another instrumental, "From Now On," the Official Music Video. Out of over 100 songs, it is their fourth strictly instrumental piece, and is also the lead track on their most recent album release, "Unleash." I enjoyed your reaction and subscribed. Thanks!!!

She's Tapping. It just looks like she's using her pick because of the way she holds it. MISA, the bassist, curls her pick under when she slaps, but Kanami doesn't. She's still holding her pick with her thumb and forefinger and tapping with her middle finger. So, sometimes, it almost looks like she's tapping with the pick, Van Halen style, but she isn't. If you really want to see her tapping try 'Blooming'. And yes, she does play piano. Not only does she write the music , but records the bands backing tracks as well. So any Sound Effects, Synths, Keys etc... are played by her. But this is one of their old instrumentals. You should check out a new on, like 'From Now On'. But if you want singing try 'Domination' LIVE. But if you want a light show, check out 'Real Existence' LIVE. It Rocks!

Tapping she is tapping. It is a fairly common technique that is easy to do but hard to do well. She is simply taping the strings into the board to make the notes. And yes she plays piano very well. She also writes all of their songs. And melts faces. Her name is Kanami Tono

EVH put tapping on the map for Kanami (Lead G, main composer). In a tribute tweet upon EVH's death, she said, "Dear Eddie Van Halen... I learned about tapping from Eruption, and I was working on an instrumental song thinking that someday I would be able to create a phrase that would pierce my heart. Favorite guitar hero...Rest in peace. We pray for the souls." She also did a tribute to the late Jazz pianist Chick Corea. What a genuinely nice person that turns into a possessed Mincho on stage, Po! 🦍🍌

you have never seen a guitarist 2 handed tapping? Literally every hard rock guitarist does it, notably Eddie VanHalen in his Eruption solo. Ace Frehley of KISS did it in his shock me solo. EVERY rock guitarist does it. It's one of the most common guitar solo techniques. Watch any video by Michael Angelo Batio.
