Scott Bradlee is a fine-but-not-mind-blowing pianist. But he's an absolute freakin' GENIUS at two things: 1) arranging, and 2) finding the right players & singers for his arrangements. PMJ is one of my favorite bands, no matter who's out front or what the song is.

And she decided that she did not want to sing opera.
@charlottevan_83 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to listen to singers who trained in opera. As we can hear in this song, Morgan has superb breath control, sustain, vowel placement, etc. Another opera-trained singer (although at a community college, not Julliard) is Avi Kaplan. He was majoring in opera in college, and had been offered a job with the Los Angeles Opera when he was lured into joining PTX for their Sing Off competition. We're lucky that they both chose the paths they're on.

Morgan James has become a favorite of mine, though I wish she wouldn't release so many home-made pieces that just don't meet the mark - not because of her vocals, just the acoustics and equipment. This is my jam as well. I was in high school when it came out. I learned to play guitar because of this song. It was played at my prom. Depending on my mood, this is equal to the original for my listening pleasure. The arrangement is incredible, the musicians are fantastic, and Morgan James is a goddess! Loved your insights on this and your other PMJ reactions. However, many commentators are missing the aspect of what Morgan James does that is truly exceptional. How many graduates of Juilliard are out there performing opera or Broadway right now? Put Morgan against them in those genres and I suspect I could not tell you who is better. On the other hand, give those performers a soul or blues song and, chances are, they will still sound like a Broadway or opera singer. Morgan has crossed over in a way that few classically trained musicians can and THAT is truly impressive. Checkout her live performance of How Glad I Am for a great soulful performance. Now for my obsession, Haley Reinhart. I expect Morgan was the better choice for this performance. However Haley has so many vocal tools at her disposal and she has a way of making the right choices of how and when to use them. She is an old soul. She doesn’t just sing classic rock, soul, blues and jazz - she IS those styles. They inhabit her. Love both artists obsessed with Haley though. Please put out more reactions to both. You can get both in Dear Prudence. And PMJ All About The Bass.

Interesting that you noted this song is below Morgan's ability. She is Juilliard trained in opera, has Broadway experience and though she has no desire to continue in opera, she still takes weekly voice lessons in the classical style. She is very good at anything she does but considers herself a soul singer. Her channel is worth a look, she and her husband, guitarist Doug Wamble have put out videos almost daily throughout the pandemic. She also performed a very nice cover of the entire Beatles White Album.
