Capella Duriensis

Capella Duriensis

12 жыл бұрын

An expressive example of free organum. Sung by Capella Duriensis in the Mosteiro Sao Pedro da Ferreira. The melody in rising and falling meets the accompanying voice at the beginning and the end. At the high point of the phrase and during the expressive contours, the two lines move in parallel fourths.

I dare to point to a beautiful music, written later, in the first year of the XIII century. Hildegard Von Bingen was a great musician (besides lots of other things) an extraordinary woman of all times. Her Music has those monodic lines of the plain-chant, but her melodies go very far beyond (maybe Celtic influences in the Rhine region where she lived). Most of the recordings of her present her music as purely monodic. But, as she mentions various instruments in her writings, and talk about the beauty of different voices singing together, some (as myself) see her music as diaphony (as in the primitive organ, with parallel/obliquos lines moving together with the main voice. The CD" VISION - The music of Hildegard Von Bingen" is a wonderful example of his music: arrangement and interpretation by by Richard Souther (in a modern vision). It worth a listen

but why parallel 4ths? Why just two voices? I would like to hear more about the musical choices behind this recording... is there a booklet?
@cuipertinebit1382
@cuipertinebit1382 9 жыл бұрын
The 4th was considered a "perfect" interval in Medieval music (along with the 5th and the Octave). It was easy to move voices parallel in 4ths without running into dissonance, as would occur more easily if trying to move parallel in other intervals, especially while staying within the tonality of the Gregorian modes.
