Seeing her in this show was the first NYC Broadway show I ever saw. It was a religious experience. Her voice is otherworldly. This performance changed my life. I remember leaving the theater with my mother completely speechless. We walked several blocks in complete silence just taking in knowing we were not the same people who entered that theater after seeing her performance.

I had the pleasure of seeing this show in previews. I knew very little about Cynthia Erivo going in. The first note she sang, a little lullabye, in the show, you could tell that she had an absolutely amazing voice even in that quiet moment and I knew I was going to be blown away. By the end of Act I I knew she would win the Tony. By the end of the show I knew the show was going to win the Tony. It was the first time I ever felt moved to give a standing ovation in the middle of a show. My "I hate musicals" husband spontaneously stood in the moments before "I am here" ended (the whole audience did). One of the most amazing experiences of my life I wish I could re-experience again and again. The kicker is, it wasn't like Cynthia was the only amazing performer in this show! The entire cast was incredible and during the last song and curtain call, everybody and I mean everybody, the cast and the audience, had tears in their eyes. It was such an amazing shared emotional moment between performers and audience and an example of how live theater is so transformative. Thank you Cynthia and thank you for making this video.

i was honoured enough to see her before the broadway transfer, when it was showing in London at the mernier chocolate factory theatre. could you imagine this show but in the round, only 180 seater, and she sings this 5 metres away from me, it was one of the most intimate, haunting , and memorable performances i've ever witnessed. She's just a gift and this whole show is spectacular.

I was in New York in 2018 and was fortunate enough to see The Color Purple in its Broadway run and I'm telling you that Cynthia's performance was so powerful and emotional that there was not a single noise from the audience while she was belting out this song. It felt like everyone was holding onto every note and words. Then the applause - so deafening! Amazing!

Such a beautiful song, and wonderful reaction! Regarding the “your body doesn’t know the difference between acting and not acting” I saw a video in which she talks about how she gets asked to sing that song for appearances a lot, and she usually will turn it down, because to get into the headspace to sing that song 8 times a week, she had to internalize all of the dismissal and hatred that Celie faced and that took a toll on her mental health. It was super interesting. Anywho, I loved your reaction!

You said it. "This is why we go to see live musical theater". It's sitting in the back of the theater when Cynthia melts your face with "HERE!!!". It's Amber Grey growling what her name is, "Our lady of the Underground". It's Christine Dwyer, with tears in her eyes, belting that she'll NEVER do a good deed "AGAIN!!". It's a gift given, 8 times a week. Hope to receive that gift again soon!

I saw this on Broadway in 2015 or 2016 and seeing it live is something else. I took my parents to the show when they came to visit me and my dad, who doesn't like musicals, complained before we got there. By the end he was in love with Cynthia's voice. He still talks about "that little girl with that powerful voice" 6 years later.

After hearing Cynthia perform this a few years ago, I was inspired and decided to perform it myself. Let me just say, this is a very hard song. She makes it look effortless but it’s probably the hardest song I’ve attempted, just due to the emotion that goes behind the lyrics and using the chest voice to portray them. She did an AMAZING job.

This reaction video will make me change that...TODAY! Now let’s talk about this wonderful performance...OH MY. GOD!!! I can’t see how any performance could be any better! The truth came through this performance! It made me feel like I’ve seen the whole show because she took us through the whole show in the on-going transformation she expresses. At the end when she starts “and most of all...” that was the moment I started to cry. Her repeating “I’m beautiful” I was shouting “yes girl...you are beautiful,” And then she digs deep and says “I’m here!” and I felt it to my very soul! Thank you for taking us through the walk! I had the absolute privelage of seeing her performance during my first trip Broadway and I still consider it to be at the pinnacle of live musical theatre performance. Also, P.S. I'm glad YT recommended this channel! I love watching performance reaction videos, but most of them are by Vocal Coaches who concentrate mostly on vocal technique and don't really dig into the things that make musical theatre so wonderful. There's a huge difference between singing and musical theatre singing, and not everyone understands that. I've seen shows where everyone is like WOW YAY SO GOOD AMAZING and I'm sitting there going ?????BUT WHERE WAS THE EMOTION AND CHARACTER

This was the last show I saw before moving out of NYC. It was the best musical theater performance I had ever witnessed. I still lose my sh*t every time I watch it. When a song is acted so well like this, you see what we should always strive for as artists, and when you can achieve it, it will stay with many of the people who saw it FOREVER. I think Odom in "Wait For It' brings the same high bar in his performance.

Thank you for reviewing this song... I agree with your assessments from this performance. I worked in the theater and got to watch the show many times. There was never a time I didn't cry! I knew that everytime I got assigned to this show, I would experience an emotional cleansing from all the crying. Many songs from this show did that. One in particular was the last song, "The Color Purple Reprise". I always liked to watch that number from the back of the orchestra level. I would always hear sniffling & see people wiping away tears. It was such a bonding experience. I never got to meet Cynthia when I was working there, but one time I came to the theater as a patron, and upon leaving, there she was, 1 or 2 doors away, standing on the sidewalk like a regular person! I know we're all 'regular people', but to have a talent like hers, and be the star of the show, and just nonchalantly standing there on the sidewalk amongst everyone coming & going... she seemed very humble to me. I even got to take a picture with her! I miss the theater during this shutdown. 🥰

Thank you so much for sharing. And so jealous you had the opportunity to experience this show on almost a nightly basis. This is actually something an acting teacher of mine ingrained in his students. When the show is over, you take your bow, take off your work clothes and go home. Basking in the glory of what you just achieved on stage, means nothing if you cant come back the next night and do it again. I would like to think this was her approach when you saw her humbly standing on the street corner.

I just love it when others get emotional when listening to music. Sometimes I feel people don’t understand that emotion from music when they are stone faced and I have just ugly cried. This is what music....this is what theatre gives people. It is such a gift and the emotion is just raw and deep.

Marc, I was so fortunate to see Ms. Erivo as Celie and one of my teen/adult idols Jennifer Holliday as Shug in this show from the 6th row. I paid full price (and I NEVER pay full price). I was a sobbing mess by the end of this number/show. This show! These women! SO powerful. Thank you SO very much for this reaction!

Hey Gary, thank you so much for sharing. What a great experience. Full Price - haha, I can relate. I spent years jumping in on student rush tickets during my University years. 😂

Thank you Marc for your beautiful and honest reaction. I literally had an out of body experience when I saw the Color Purple on Broadway. I never cry in public and after this performance I was a blubbering mess along with the entire audience. Cynthia Erivo's depiction of Celie was so raw, poignant and struck an emotional chord that had my heart in the palm of her hand from beginning till end.

Marc Daniel Patrick - each time in the 3rd or 4th row. Cannot tell you how many people seated around us saw the show 6, 7, or even 8 times. Each time we brought our kids and friends to share the experience. Yes, we spent a small fortune on these tix, but got back soooo much more.
