Great to see someone doing some lesser known Elton John songs. And the Dont shoot me album is awsome.

Lyrics by the incomparable Bernie Taupin and music by Elton. One of the greatest songwriting partnership ever. Fantastic reaction!! Thank you! Best wishes from the UK.

Elton John was inspired by Leon Russell a great song writer and musician. Elton spent a year helping him get into the rockin roll hall of fame about 15 years ago. The album this song is from is, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player. It was my first Elton John album and I listened to it over and over again in the early 70's when I was about 14 years old 1973. I have never seen anyone else react to this song

This is fabulous seventies. Anything went and thank you God. Elton is a self taught piano prodigy. He was offered a scholarship to London's Royal Academy of Music. At this time Elton writes music and is a great Rock composer. But, he had a secret weapon. A friend and lyricist named Bernie Taupin. He wrote all the lyrics during Elton Johns run in the seventies. They are definitely one of the magical pairings that blew the world away.

The guitarist is Davey Johnstone who has been in Elton’s band since 1972 but played on the Madman Across the Water in 1971 which is another brilliant album and the title track is eerie and well worth diving into. Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding from the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road will, I think, blow you away also. Here’s Have Mercy on the Criminal live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 1986 kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaDSh6uslN2ImsU

About the blues: Sir Elton (then Reginald Dwight) formed the band Bluesology early on so lots of blues in his early days. Trivia: Bluesology later became the backing band for Long John Baldry (a great British blues man in his own right) from whom Reginald took the “John” of his new name. Anyway this is a great track and it’s bluesy feel is well earned. Great to hit some of the lesser known pieces!

I'll add to some deeper tracks for Elton, "Tower of Babel", "The King Must Die", "I've Seen That Movie Too ", "Blue Eyes", "Come Down In Tine", "Bitter Fingers", "High Flying Bird" for starts but there are many, many more! Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics and Elton put them to music!

The Guitarist is Davey Johnstone. A Folk Guitarist from Edinburgh Scotland. He joined Eltons band in 1971. He plays all kinds of string instruments. Go watch Elton John 60th Birthday Holiday Inn, and see Daveys mandolin playing

I ended up a prog man but first love was Elton John and some of his early stuff was prog like, telling stories while chord changes abound.

Try his "Ticking" or for more of his piano try "Tonight"...Awesome songs and quite different from each other, with one telling a story and the other lamenting the loss of a relationship! And for an absolute banger, try his "Better Off Dead", such interesting poetry in that one too!

While I agree this is a great song, since you're justing starting with Elton, save the deep tracks for later. Classics like Tiny Dancer, Levon, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Bennie and the Jets, Daniel, and Someone Saved My Life Tonight should be next.
