Haha yes, 'songs for lovers' is a wonderfully ridiculous name. Imagine inviting a date for a romantic dinner, lighting some candles and putting this on repeat. Oh, how fun! As was watching this. Thanks! Have a nice evening!

Haha, your face & laugh of disbelief at around 2:29 just got me, Steve! 🤣 Yes, it sure feels like these guys are having us on in this little ditty, -funny middle bit and keys sound included-, just fooling around on a Sunday afternoon… I’m so glad that Aron Mellergårdh gets his dues in this reaction vid, he’s just such an awesome musician. Can’t wait for more Dirty Loops reactions; Two of Jonah’s solo projects, “Coffee Break” and his reimagining of MJ’s “Bad”, are great, as are also DL earlier covers and tracks from their debut album Loopified. “Sayonara Love” and “Hit Me” are just some…. Enjoy, and thanks again for a super reaction!

As I've understood it, Songs For Lovers isn't the band name, but rather the project name. For examlpe, the four songs were included on the Japan edition of the Phoenix EP, (and they posted everything on their official channels) so I think they still count it as Dirty Loops, even though it's something Henrik and Aron did while Jonah was busy with his solo album (and also, the stupid pandemic that cancelled all the gigs for them). :)

I saw an interview with Henrik, where he mentioned that Aron used to force him through endless sessions where they would just play a single groove over and over for hours on end. Aron would say things like ”My 132 BPM is not good enough, you need to come over”. Reminds me of the stories of how Prince used to ride his musicians much the same way - (often times not even participating himself, because, you know…) The point is those two guys have played together since they were teens, and most people would probably not be able to fathom the amount of time they spent playing together. But man, does it pay off…
@lottawiklund86062 жыл бұрын
I think it was quite a bit more organised than that even. They (Henrik and Aron) talked about it in a Swedish podcast, where the interviewer was someone who went to music college with them, and apparently Henrik and Aron had these mad practice sessions together 4-5 nights a week for about two years. It was back when the booking of practice rooms was still made on a paper schedule that was put up every Monday morning, and they took turns having to get up early on Mondays to go book slots for both of them, for the week. You could book 3 hour slots every day, so they booked theirs back to back, in the same practice room, and the guy doing the interview said you could clearly see the handwriting for each week was one person booking for both of them. Then they had some sort of practice routine, where they picked out two new grooves (just a few bars long) every week, that they found problematic in some way, and practiced each of them 3 x 30 minutes with a 5 minute break between each half hour session, every night they had practice together (i.e. 4-5 nights a week). The interviewer found it amusing how he could pass their practice room several times in a night and the same stuff was heard from it every time. Sometimes Henrik lost focus and tried to play a fill or something and Aron would yell at him to get back on track. They sounded like it was a very fond memory, the way they talked about it. These guys are just ridiculously hard working and if I had even a smidgen of their practice discipline I would be very happy indeed. Sheesh, they're impressive!

Great comments, as always. This is such a super fun number and yeah how nice is it to see such consummate musicians just unabashedly showing their joy in playing the music. Rare but we need more of this, so infectious...in a good way. The other three Songs for Lovers are all unique and uniformly delightful.

Yeah, Jonah's "Coffee Break" is for sure worth a listen. :) It excludes the other dudes, but it has some other fantastic and well established musicians in it so you don't notice they're missing. It's awesomely catchy!

Incredible musicianship on display and, yes, it’s also a “good song”. As we know, these super musicians often get so caught up in displaying their chops they forget to serve the song and not go overboard, but these guys avoid that temptation here and produce a great tune. For example, my long-term complaint about Steve Vai is he can’t write/compose a decent song, whereas Eric Johnson is a virtuoso who focuses on creating fantastic songs.

At 2:55 in your vid (not sure exactly when in the original) Jonah accidentally hits the keyboard at the wrong time and they left it in, you can see his reaction (or it was staged to be funny who knows)

The other 3 "SONGS FOR LOVERS" without Jonah, were made just for you……the music reviewer who doesn't hear piano; doesn't "understand" piano"! Jonah's keyboards and vocals are the bedrock of all of their music, so what do you hear while Jonah is killing it on keyboards and vocals……drums and bass. And drums and bass. And drums and bass! Aron and Henrik are absolute masters, and to say they are merely rhythm to Jonah's melodies is ludicrous. But throughout your D.L. reviews, I get the feeling that they are all you hear. On "Over The Horizon" you say Jonah's playing 'jazz chords" WTF are Jazz Chords. "……Horizon" is one of my favorites by them and as usual, Jonah kills the keys, yet you feel there is too much of him on this. I DO enjoy your reviews, but I think it's time you learn more about piano, jazz and fusion. Sorry if this comes across as harsh, but as a keyboard player, it feels like you are missing the 3rd dimension of D.L.
