Heard just a hint of "Pick Up The Pieces" in the funk groove. These guy's hyper tight syncopation always knock me in the weeds, especially those triplet riffs that punch in when you least expect it. Group beamed in from another planet...I'm sure of it. lol

The horn line is absolutely absurd. So freaking tight.

It is still so hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that these two groups of musicians in different places and at different times...mind blown! Definitely brought TOP to my mind as soon as it started. Such a tight, technical brass section.

Wonderful reaction. I just love this song so much. To me it sounds very Brecker Brother-ish (has some major Some Skunk Funk vibes, if you ask me), but it definitely has some Tower of Power flavour as well. Gotta love that ridiculously tight horn section. Those runs they're making here are no joke!

And again, it made my day, Steve, to see a reaction on this channel to yet another one of Dirty Loops and Cory Wong’s firecrackers… I love the fun, the funk and the tightness of this track, every single time I listen to it! There also is “Rings of Saturn”, another video with visuals from that same album, and again without Jonah’s vocals. A much more mellow piece than the other ones. The other tracks from that album are audios only, but also super funky, jazzy and worth listening to. Always appreciate your interesting comments on Dirty Loops, and am immensely looking forward to the next vid!

So this video was actually filmed in Sweden (on the right) and Minneapolis (on the Left), was not recorded together Dirty Loops is managed by Quincy Jones. Cory uses a lot of musicians that have played with Prince in the past, including Sunny T on bass. Cory is also a part of Vulfpeck and Fearless Flyers and has partnered with so may artists on his own projects. The more you know :)

Love watching the trumpet guy in the back left. He looks like he's just lost in the groove man. I think they're called The Horn Heads and they used to be Prince's brass section? Someone correct me on that if I'm wrong. Yeah, jamming funky tune. Snare almost sounds like a piccolo and it pops. Bass tone...it's like melted chocolate. Can't wait for Rock You. You're gonna love it and add it to your DL playlist. Great job Steve.

Hold up. This was PRINCE'S brass section??? Holy shit. No wonder they sound so good.
@lottawiklund86062 жыл бұрын
Michael B. Nelson (trombone) and Steve Strand (the older trumpet guy) were in the Hornheads from the start and did tour with Prince. Kenni Holmen (here on tenor saxophone) joined a bit later, but has still been with them since the mid 90s (not sure if he ever toured with Prince though). Jon Lampley (trumpet) and Grace Kelly (baritone saxophone) are a tad too young to have been with them at that time. :)
@JamilaGomez822 жыл бұрын
Jon Lampley (the brother in the back) is not a member of the Hornheads. He's a member of the Huntertones. He is also a member of Stephen Colbert's house band. Grace Kelly used to be a member of that house band, but is no longer. Other members of Cory Wong's band who are not a part of this particular project are/were also members of Colbert's house band.

When you've got Jerry Hey contracting the horn section and arranging their charts, you have no doubt that they will be virtuosic, exceptionally tight, and in the pocket. Absolutely one of the best commercial horn sounds in the industry for this entire album.
@Bone2BWildMusic2 жыл бұрын
While you're certainly right about Jerry Hey's place in commercial music history, he did not work on this album. (However, he did drop me a nice note complimenting me on this project, which was quite an honor)
@backpacking_trombonist Жыл бұрын
@Bone2BWildMusic omg I'm so sorry. I swear I had read somewhere that Jerry had worked with these guys and assumed it was on these charts since they don't seem to have many tunes with horn sections. You're Michael Nelson of Hornheads then? Incredibly nice arranging and what an amazing sounding horn section.

Splendid! Always appreciate hearing your breakdowns. Thank you! Would it be possible to interest you in doing a reaction on U.T.F.F Jack & Owane feat. Henrik Linder on base. Öjvind "Owane" Pedersen is a Norwegian multi instrumentalist and a guitarist. Jack Gardiner is a guitarist from the UK. They are crazy talented and they invited their childhood hero, Henrik Linder, to do base on one of their tracks on the album "Shredemption". I would love to hear your breakdown of that track. You say you’re not a keyboard person, so Jonah doesn’t get the praise someone like me, a keyboard player, would heap on him. I understand. You did, however, notice the split screens where Jonah was playing note for note what the horns were playing! Jonah’s playing is a showcase for his ungodly talent for arranging. I’d never play down the genius of Aron or Henrik, however, without the keyboards and the vocals their pieces would be strictly “Songs For Lovers”. With them you get “Phoenix”.
